Making Sense of the First Nation, Metis, and Inuit Education Policy Framework

Abstract In 2007 the Ministry of Education in Ontario identified Aboriginal education as one of its key priorities with the release of the First Nation, Métis and Inuit Education Policy Framework (FNMI). Improving educational outcomes and closing the achievement gap between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students is the focus of this policy. This study examines the policy implementation process in one school board in Ontario by focusing on how teachers in two elementary schools made sense of the policy expectations and how this sense-making impacted their professional practice. In order to examine how implementation was understood and acted upon by these teachers, the sense-making/co-construction model developed by Datnow, Hubbard, & Mehan (2002) provides the starting point for analysis. This study seeks to make visible the sense-making cues that teachers used to notice and select new information and to examine how these cues impacted teacher enactment of the FNMI policy. Sense-making theory supports the examination of change at the micro level of local policy actors; while the co-construction model with its meditational system of individual agency, organizational structure/culture, and environmental messaging contextualizes the individual sense-making of teachers within a larger social environment. The research methodology included teacher interviews designed to collect evidence of teacher sense-making during the policy implementation process, and school visits to observe evidence of school culture and structure. Interview responses of 15 elementary teachers and 2 principals were analyzed for sense-making cues. The findings revealed clusters of sense-making cues connected to three main sense-making frameworks or discourses. These discourses included the teacher as professional, equity and inclusion, and leadership and change. These findings support previous research on sense-making and policy implementation and contribute further insight into the micro processes of policy implementation, which could be leveraged to improve policy implementation. Reshaping an Enduring Sense of Self: The Process of Recovery from a First Episode of Schizophrenia

Although many advances in the treatment of schizophrenia have been made over the past decade, little is known about the process of recovery from a first episode of schizophrenia (FES). To date, the study of recovery in the field of mental health has focused on long-term mental illness. This in depth qualitative study drew upon Charmaz’s (1990) constructivist grounded theory methodology to address the following questions: How do individuals who have experienced a FES describe their process of recovery? How does an identified individual (e.g. friend, family member, teacher, or clinician) describe their role during the participant’s process of recovery, and their perception of the recovery process? Ten primary participants (who self-identified as recovering from a FES) had two interviews; in addition, there was a one-time interview with a secondary participant, for a total of 30 interviews. Data collection sources included participant semi-structured interviews, participant selected personal objects that symbolized their recovery, and clinical records. The results provide a substantive theory of the process of recovery from a FES. The emergent process of recovery model for these participants is comprised of the following phases: ‘Lives prior to the illness’, ‘Lives interrupted: Encountering the illness’, ‘Engaging in services and supports’, ‘Re-engaging in life’, ‘Envisioning the future’; and the core category, ‘Re-shaping an enduring sense of self,’ that occurred through all phases. A prominent distinctive feature of this model is that participants’ enduring sense of self were reshaped versus reconstructed throughout their recovery. The emergent model of recovery from a FES is unique, and as such, provides implications for clinical care, future research, and policy development specifically for these young people and their families.

Low-Power, Low-Voltage SRAM Circuits Design For Nanometric CMOS Technologies

Embedded SRAM memory is a vital component in modern SoCs. More than 80% of the System-on-Chip (SoC) die area is often occupied by SRAM arrays. As such, system reliability and yield is largely governed by the SRAM's performance and robustness. The aggressive scaling trend in CMOS device minimum feature size, coupled with the growing demand in high-capacity memory integration, has imposed the use of minimal size devices to realize a memory bitcell. The smallest 6T SRAM bitcell to date occupies a 0.1um2 in silicon area. SRAM bitcells continue to benefit from an aggressive scaling trend in CMOS technologies. Unfortunately, other system components, such as interconnects, experience a slower scaling trend. This has resulted in dramatic deterioration in a cell's ability to drive a heavily-loaded interconnects. Moreover, the growing fluctuation in device properties due to Process, Voltage, and Temperature (PVT) variations has added more uncertainty to SRAM operation. Thus ensuring the ability of a miniaturized cell to drive heavily-loaded bitlines and to generate adequate voltage swing is becoming challenging. A large percentage of state-of-the-art SoC system failures are attributed to the inability of SRAM cells to generate the targeted bitline voltage swing within a given access time. The use of read-assist mechanisms and current mode sense amplifiers are the two key strategies used to surmount bitline loading effects. On the other hand, new bitcell topologies and cell supply voltage management are used to overcome fluctuations in device properties. In this research we tackled conventional 6T SRAM bitcell limited drivability by introducing new integrated voltage sensing schemes and current-mode sense amplifiers. The proposed schemes feature a read-assist mechanism. The proposed schemes' functionality and superiority over existing schemes are verified using transient and statistical SPICE simulations. Post-layout extracted views of the devices are used for realistic simulation results. Low-voltage operated SRAM reliability and yield enhancement is investigated and a wordline boost technique is proposed as a means to manage the cell's WL operating voltage. The proposed wordline driver design shows a significant improvement in reliability and yield in a 400-mV 6T SRAM cell. The proposed wordline driver design exploit the cell's Dynamic Noise Margin (DNM), therefore boost peak level and boost decay rate programmability features are added. SPICE transient and statistical simulations are used to verify the proposed design's functionality. Finally, at a bitcell-level, we proposed a new five-transistor (5T) SRAM bitcell which shows competitive performance and reliability figures of merit compared to the conventional 6T bitcell. The functionality of the proposed cell is verified by post-layout SPICE simulations. The proposed bitcell topology is designed, implemented and fabricated in a standard ST CMOS 65nm technology process. A 1.2_ 1.2 mm2 multi-design project test chip consisting of four 32-Kbit (256-row x 128-column) SRAM macros with the required peripheral and timing control units is fabricated. Two of the designed SRAM macros are dedicated for this work, namely, a 32-Kbit 5T macro and a 32-Kbit 6T macro which is used as a comparison reference. Other macros belong to other projects and are not discussed in this document.

Enduring Gardens: Woven by Friends into the Fabric of the Urban Community

For the most part, academic literature neglects the psychological impact of public gardens and the landscape on human well-being. Literature about botanical gardening and urban landscape design provide the foundation of contemporary public gardening practices. Largely overlooked, however, is a discussion of the relevance of such gardens to visitors. Public gardens, however, can play an important role in fostering a sense of place in communities, in both historical and contemporary contexts. In this study, the impacts of such gardens are considered through Canadian experiences using perceptual lenses offered by diverse writers whose work can be found in bodies of literature related to history, geography, non-fiction, and poetry. Concepts such as ‘place-making’ which can foster ‘home-making’, for example, are intriguing and worthwhile areas of inquiry in understanding the role of public gardens in the urban landscape. This research explores the importance of ‘home’ in gardens. It also considers the importance of gardens to an individual’s internal (psychological) and external (social) home, particularly for those currently involved as volunteers at public gardens. The concept is related to stewardship and how being a steward of the garden home is key to being a steward of one’s internal home. The animating question here concerns the role that cultivated gardens might play in an individual’s connection to landscape. This topic is explored through an examination of volunteer programs (popularly known as Friends of the Garden programs) using grounded theory to explore the perceptions and perspectives of volunteers who work in three public gardens in Ottawa, Kitchener, and Toronto, Ontario. The subject of gardens and their interrelationship to people lends itself to an interdisciplinary methodological approach encompassing studies in landscape ecology, geography, history, planning, design, and psychology, among others. The qualitative methods approach used in this thesis involves an in-depth examination of secondary literature, as well as field work involving semi-structured interviews, and narrative methods. Further, this research explores the role these gardens play with respect to the unique Canadian sense of place and well-being found within urban public gardens. The findings of the research reveal differing perspectives of volunteers with respect to “sense-making” and the ways in which they engage with each other and with the urban public gardens where they work. In addition, the findings revealed the crucial role played by the volunteer as stewards of the garden. The volunteers see these gardens as sanctuaries and view their own role as serving the greater good of their communities for reasons that go beyond political and economic considerations; they are based on intrinsic sets of values. The research revealed that volunteers frequently possessed strong connections to childhood experiences spent in natural settings with their families. These experiences helped to stimulate a shared belief amongst gardeners that the very act of gardening is itself a valued and valuable “way of life”. Furthermore, volunteers are often retired and older; as such, they volunteer in the gardens as a way to contribute to the world to make it more beautiful and meaningful for others and to pass those gardens down to future generations. Gardens are seen as ways to re-create home from one’s childhood past; volunteers often link their present experience in the garden with a sense of connection and belonging in similar terms used to describe their home (as a country, a house, or a valued place). These findings demonstrate that there is a strong sense of place that is both acquired and fostered through engagement with urban public gardens. The findings also raise the possibility that public gardens play an important role in fostering sense of place in visitors. This, in turn, can contribute to a sense of home or belonging, and stewardship of communities and natural surroundings. This research contributes to an understanding of the role that public gardens play as valuable places that make important contributions to social and ecological well-being.

Sammanfattning Huvudsyftet med föreliggande kvantitativa studie var att undersöka om polisstudenter på Linnéuniversitetet i Växjö har ett högre genomsnittligt värde av känsla av sammanhang ( Kasam) i jämförelse med en slumpmässig tillfrågad kontrollgrupp av studenter på Linnéuniversitetet i Växjö. Det sekundära syftet var att utröna om det föreligger några könskillnader. Studenterna fick besvara 29 frågor på en Likertskala 1-7, i livsfrågeformuläret Kasam-29. Resultatet visade på att polisstudenter har en högre genomsnittlig grad av Kasam, men att kön inte har någon betydelse. Antalet tillfrågade respondenter var sammanlagt 92, fördelat på 54 polisstudenter varav 37 var män och 17 var kvinnor. Kontrollgruppen bestod av   38 slumpmässigt tillfrågade studenter, 16 män och 22 kvinnor. Det ojämna antalet respondenter mellan grupperna och könsfördelningen hade ingen signifikant påverkan. / Abstract The main purpose of this quantitative survey was to investigate if police students at Linné University of Växjö would have a higher degree of Sense of Coherence (SOC) in comparison to a random control group of other students at Linné University. The secondary purpose was to determine if there are any gender differences. The students answered 29 questions on the Likert scale 1-7 from the Kasam-29 questionnaire. The result showed that police students had an average higher degree of Sense of Coherence, but that gender had no effect. The total of respondents was 92, distributed on 54 police students; 37 men and 17 women. The control group consisted of  38 randomly chosen students, 16 men and 22 women. The uneven quantity of respondents between the groups and genders did not have any significant influence.

The Dynamics of Heritage : Contested use of spaces at the UNESCO listed forts and castles in two regions in Ghana

This thesis is based on seven weeks of fieldwork in Central Region and Western Region in Ghana and discusses how UNESCO listed forts and castles in the area shall be preserved and used today. Through in-depth interviews with important stakeholders and through observations at forts and castles the intention is to unveil what conflicts are present and also how heritage is being negotiated among these actors. A key issue is whether the sites shall be regarded as commodities or as public memorials. Working with the theoretical concepts of space, place and heritage and how these can be understood in the chosen context the thesis seeks to explain how different actors are able to transform the way these edifices are being used. The thesis’ contribution and what makes it relevant is especially how it illuminates that heritage is constantly being re-produced as a response to input from stakeholders. It also stresses the challenges in how to deal with heritage property in the contemporary planning context.

An investigation of the clinical assessment of joint position sense

The assessment of proprioception in contemporary clinical practice usually involves having the patients with eyes closed attempt to identify passively held test positions using verbal descriptions or limb matching responses. It is equally common for the examiner to estimate the accuracy of these responses without the aid of a measuring instrument. Since these uninstrumented assessments are unlikely to allow adequate identification or quantification of a patient’s proprioceptive deficits, the aim of this study was to develop and validate an improved method for the clinical assessment of joint position sense. The two main types of assessment investigated were: (1) replication of joint positions using limb matching responses, during which the test and response positions were measured using computer-aided or manual digitisation of videotape images, and (2) joint position sense assessments where rating scales were used to define either the test or response positions. An analysis of the relationship between mood states, sense of self, flow and personal constructs in anorexia nervosa participants

Public view removed at the authors request. 16/07/2006 / The daily experience of anorexia nervosa sufferers has not previously been studied and yet it is fundamental to understanding anorexia nervosa. This study examined and compared the daily experiences of anorexia nervosa patients and control participants in terms of sense of self, mood states and flow states. Flow is characterised by undivided concentration and interest in an activity for intrinsic benefits. Flow is not always desirable, as some ways of experiencing it may be harmful to the individual and society. Anorexia nervosa participants were recruited from hospitals and private practices of clinicians specialising in the treatment of anorexia nervosa. Exclusion criteria included male gender, chronic anorexia nervosa, drug abuse, and current participation in an inpatient program. Anorexia nervosa participants completed a series of questionnaires at baseline, 3-6 month follow-up and 7-12 month follow-up (stage one, two and three respectively). The questionnaires were designed to measure the severity of their eating disorder. Anorexia nervosa and control group participants completed Experience Sampling Forms (ESF) and a Repertory Grid at baseline and 3-6 months. The ESFs were completed each time a pager was activated. The pager was activated seven times a day, for four days at random times between 8.00am and 10.00pm. The pager signals were a minimum of two hours apart. The Repertory Grid consisted of 23 constructs and 13 elements provided to the participant. Thirty-one anorexia nervosa sufferers and thirty-two control participants completed stage one and eighteen anorexia nervosa sufferers and twenty-seven control group participants completed stage two of the study. Eighteen anorexia nervosa sufferers completed stage three of the study. Control participants were not required to participate in stage three. There was no difference in the severity of anorexia nervosa between completers and drop-outs The analysis of the ESFs at stage one indicated that the anorexia nervosa group participants did not spend more time alone at home or more time alone in any situation than the control group. For both groups, being alone had a negative influence on mood state, but had no effect on sense of self. The anorexia nervosa group felt lonelier and less sociable than the control group. The mood state and sense of self for the anorexia nervosa group was significantly lower over all the ESFs when compared to the control group. They were also more self-critical, experienced higher levels of guilt, were less able to live up to their own expectations, and were less satisfied with their performance in the activity they were doing. The anorexia nervosa group experienced less flow states than the control group at stage one. There was an improvement in mood state, sense of self and self-criticism for the anorexia nervosa group when they were in a flow state compared to when they were not in a flow state. There was an improvement in mood state, sense of self, guilt and self-criticism for the control group when they experienced flow, however these differences were not significant. The anorexia nervosa group had a more positive mood state and sense of self at stage two when compared to stage one. Correspondingly, there was a trend towards a reduced severity of the disorder indicated by a significant improvement on some of the psychological tests (EAT, REDS, BDI, DT). There was also a significant improvement in BMI. However, there was a significant decline in the amount of flow of anorexia nervosa participants experienced at stage two when compared to stage one. This result may be attributed to the significant decline in the response rate on ESFs in the second stage of the study for both the anorexia nervosa and control groups. Anorexia nervosa non-responders at stage two reported more severe symptoms of anorexia nervosa than anorexia nervosa responders, although this was a trend and reached significance only on minor indicators of eating disorder severity. The identification of a factor that predicted severity over a six-month period was not possible. The repertory grid analysis showed that the construct system of the anorexia nervosa participants was tighter and less complex than that of the control group. The anorexia nervosa group construed themselves as dissimilar from the way they would like to be in any context. The control group construed themselves as similar to the way they would like to be when they were alone, but as dissimilar from the way they would like to be when they were with other people. While the most salient element for both the anorexia nervosa and control groups was 'alone at home', it appears that the controls use this time for goal-directed activities. In contrast, this time was dominated by fear of losing control for the anorexia nervosa group. Although there was a trend towards a decrease in the amount of variance accounted for by the first component for the anorexia nervosa group at stage two compared to stage one, the interpretation of this result was complicated by mixed result of the control group. The anorexia nervosa groups' daily experience of life was bleak when compared to the daily experience of the control group, except for periods when the anorexia nervosa participants experienced a flow state. DeVries (1992) has documented the success of therapeutic interventions that involve the identification and replication of activities that resulted in a flow state. This investigation suggests that a similar result may be possible in the treatment of anorexia nervosa.

The relative benefit of reliable heading updates on urban wayfinding

Prior research about wayfinding has found that females tend to employ a single strategy based on landmarks, where males are more versatile, using a dual strategy of landmarks and global orientation information such as cardinal directions (Lawton, 2010). It was proposed that this difference occurs due to males’ better sense of direction, which would deliver more trustworthy indications of current heading. Since males’ versatility has often been linked with better navigation performance (for example Sandstrom, Kaufman, & Huettel, 1998; Saucier et al., 2002) this study sought to contribute to the growing body of literature on methods of training to increase sense of direction (such as Hund and Minarik, 2006; Hund & Nazarczuk, 2009). An experimental procedure was used to investigate the possibility that the provision of reliable cardinal direction heading updates to participants would lead to a dual strategy for orientation in those that usually use a single strategy based on landmarks. This was done in an urban navigation context, with the main dependent variable being level of recall for route structure. Using the Santa Barbara Sense of Direction Scale, the study revealed that males had a higher self-reported sense of direction than females. / Additionally, no sex differences in performance were found on the route structure recall tasks. Rather than being due to females’ use of a dual wayfinding strategy, however, this was interpreted as an artefact of the use of a video in the procedure, which involved watching someone else navigating along a route. This is supported by another finding, that conditions containing cardinal directions or landmark spatial references did not produce higher route structure recall than the control condition. Since the procedure did not require participants to navigate through a real, or virtual, environment, it may not have been perceived as a disorientation threat. Due to this, they may not have employed wayfinding strategies, accounting for the poor influence of the spatial reference conditions and the lack of sex difference. The study is therefore viewed as an ideal candidate for replication by future investigators, who may wish to compare performance using a task where participants are required to deploy wayfinding strategies.
