Mapping community with African-Canadian youth newcomers: Settlement narratives and welcoming communitiesCampbell, Graham, Robert January 2014 (has links)
Immigration is important to Canada and Canadian society in many ways. Leading the G8 group of countries with the highest proportion of foreign-born population, immigrants make up an important part of the Canadian economy and society (Statistics Canada, 2013). As noted by several authors, much of the literature surrounding newcomer settlement concentrates on either young children or adults, leaving a gap in research into settlement experiences of adolescents (Anisef & Kilbride, 2003; Berry, Phinney, Sam, & Vedder, 2006; Janzen & Ochocka, 2003; Omidvar & Richmond, 2003).
The purpose of this research project is to explore important community places, themes around settlement, and welcoming communities with newcomer youth in the context of stories surrounding maps of their community. The data were collected as part of a larger project exploring engagement of traditionally underrepresented groups in community-based planning practices. Over the course of the three-day African-Canadian Youth Leadership Project in 2011, thirteen immigrant youth participated in leadership and research activities. The current study focuses on data gathered through a cognitive mapping exercise conducted as part of that larger project.
Through thematic narrative analysis of interview transcripts, videos, and maps, major themes of home and family, social places, and support networks emerged as being connected to important places in the context of settlement and the perception of a welcoming community. Issues of safety and exclusion were also raised in participants??? stories. These themes are explored as they connect to place, which grounds a discussion of family connections, social capital, and third places contributing to newcomers??? sense of place, and therefore their experience of places in the community.
The importance of bridging social capital is also illustrated, including the links to places in the community that share characteristics of Oldenburg???s (1999) third places. Leisure settings were prominent examples of such places in newcomer youth???s stories and maps, often as context for social learning, language skill development, and fostering social connections. Findings show support for Seat???s idea of settlement as being conceived of full engagement in the host society, as well as the feeling of fitting in (2000).
Potential benefits of this and similar research include a greater understanding of newcomer youth settlement experiences, contributing to theory and grounding the settlement experience in the concept of place. Issues of bridging social connections and the importance of the community???s role in newcomer engagement might facilitate policy and planning considerations for creating welcoming communities and community places.

Med tiden på sin sida : Narratologi, retorik, och moral i Julian Barnes The sense of an EndingEklöf, Fredrik January 2014 (has links)

Psychological strengths, stress and suicide ideation of correctional officials / C.J. BothaBotha, Christoffel Jakobus January 2003 (has links)
Suicide ideation is a growing phenomenon that can be observed in stressful environments
such as those of a correctional official, and it is a cause for concern. Suicide ideation is
seen as the first step of suicidal behaviour and refers to thoughts, cognitions and overt
intent to kill oneself. The root causes for correctional officials experiencing such a severe
state of hopelessness that they feel death must be the only escape, can be ascribed to
different factors.
The objective of this research is to establish the relationship between psychological
strengths, stress and suicide ideation of employees of the Department of Correctional
Services (DCS). Three concepts of psychological strength namely locus of control, sense
of coherence and affect as independent variables, were compared, with suicide ideation as
a dependant variable. The relationship between suicide ideation and stress as an
independent variable was also established.
A cross-sectional design was used. A simple random sample (n=157) was taken from
correctional officers from a management area in the Freestate Province. The Work Locus
of Control Scale, Orientation to Life Questionnaire, Affectometer 2, and the Adult
Suicide Ideation Questionnaire were administered. In addition, the Correctional Officer
Stress Inventory was developed and administered. Principal component and factor
extraction with Oblique rotation, Cronbach alpha and inter-item correlation coefficients,
factor analysis, a discriminant analysis and a stepwise multiple regression analysis were
used to analyse the data. Results showed that positive affect and external locus of control
were associated with suicide ideation. / Thesis (M.A. (Industrial Psychology))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2004.

Organisational politics, sense of coherence and work wellness of protection services members / Petra Helena Elizabeth MullerMuller, Petra Helena Elizabeth January 2004 (has links)
Continuous changes in the security systems around the world, along with the increased
pressure to perform may result in feelings of distrust, strain in interpersonal relations,
psychological strain, fatigue and tension, all affecting the well-being of employees, especially
among protection services members. Work wellness becomes an important aspect when
focusing on the safety of people to whom the protection services delivers a service, as well as
when the focus is on the safety of these members. Burnout and work engagement are specific
focus areas in this regard. To measure burnout and work engagement, it is important to use
reliable and valid instruments. Along with burnout and work engagement there are other
focus areas that can have a direct influence on these dimensions, namely the perception of
organisational politics. The impact of perceptions of organisational politics on burnout and
work engagement can be moderated or mediated by sense of coherence.
The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between work wellness,
organisational politics and sense of coherence through the development of a model of work
wellness for protection services members comprising of burnout, work engagement,
organisational politics and sense of coherence.
The research method consists of a literature review and an empirical study. A cross-sectional
survey design was used to collect the data. An availability sample (N = 341) from protection
services members was taken. The Maslach Burnout Inventory - General Survey (MBI-GS),
Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES), Perceptions of Organisational Politics (POPS),
Orientation to Life Questionnaire (OTLQ) and a biographical questionnaire were
administered. The statistical analysis was carried out with the help of the SPSS-programme
and AMOS. The statistical methods utilised in the article consisted of descriptive statistics,
Cronbach alpha coefficients, exploratory factor analysis, Pearson product-moment correlation
coefficients and structural equation modelling methods.
vii
Exploratory factor analysis confirmed a two factor model of burnout, consisting of burnout
(exhaustion and cynicism) and professional efficacy which represented the data quite well
after certain items were left out. In previous research among protection services members two
factors in the UWES could also be extracted namely vigour/dedication and absorption. The
MBI-GS and UWES both showed acceptable internal consistencies.
The analysis of Pearson correlations in this study showed that burnout is negatively related to
Vigour/dedication and sense of coherence. Professional efficacy is positively related to
Vigour/dedication and absorption. Vigour/Dedication is positively related to absorption and
sense of coherence.
Prolonged exposure to things like criminal aspects, life-and-death decision making and
general political behaviour at organisational level, can result in feelings of burnout. Negative
perceptions of organisational politics resulted in higher levels of burnout experienced by
protection services members. Sense of coherence mediated the effect of organisational
politics on work wellness.
Recommendations for future research were made. / Thesis (M.A. (Industrial Psychology))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2005.

'n Ondersoek na die belewinge van informele versorgers van MIV/VIGS pasiënt : 'n salutogene perspektief / Ilse SteenkampSteenkamp, Ilse January 2005 (has links)
The aim of this research was to determine the way in which informal
caregivers of HIV/AIDS patients experience their task as caregivers as well as
to identify factors, or general resistance resources, which exercise an
influence on their psychological well-being, and more specifically on their
sense of coherence.
The stressors encountered by informal caregivers of HIVIAIDS patients have
previously been investigated thoroughly in a number of studies. The tasks of
informal caregivers very often encompass much more than what would be, for
example, included in the nursing context and therefore exceed the limits
applying to the formal sector. Stressors to which caregivers are exposed
include physical, financial and emotional aspects. It has been proved that this
state of affairs has a negative impact on their physical health conditions as
well as their psychological well-being.
Caregivers do, however, at times report a certain extent of growth
experienced by them which can be related to the care giving situation. The
salutogenic perspective allows for a study of the origin of health and has, for
the purposes of this study, been applied to obtain an alternative description of
the caregivers' experiences. According to this perspective health does not
merely mean the absence of disease, but also refers to health being
influenced by an individual's management of stressful events. When an
individual, even if confronted with stressful circumstances, has adequate
general resistance resources at his/her disposal, a strong sense of coherence
can develop and this will have a positive influence on his/her psychological
well-being. In the South African context little if any literature can be found on
the salutogenic factors that may affect informal caregivers of HIV/AIDS
patients.
The investigation of this study was based on an availability sample consisting
of 8 informal caregivers of HIVIAIDS patients. A one shot cross sectional
design with triangulation of data assessment techniques was used. The
researcher obtained data with regard to the caregivers' sense of coherence by
means of the Sense of Coherence Scale (SOC) (Antonovsky, 1987). Semistructured
interviews were conducted with all the caregivers involved and a
qualitative analysis followed.
The results revealed that informal caregivers' sense of coherence was much
lower than- that of a group of nurses (formal caregivers) as described by
Cilliers (2003). One of the reasons for this significant difference could be the
lack of a structured setting or environment in which caregivers still have to
perform their duties and responsibilities. According to the results a variety of
factors exercising a negative impact on informal caregivers' sense of
coherence could be identified. These included (a) stress, (b) exposure to
unfamiliar situations, and (c) a lack of counselling skills. Within the framework
of the salutogenic perspective there were, however, different factors also
known as general resistance resources, that exercised a positive impact on
the caregivers' sense of coherence. Among these the following could be
counted: (a) spirituality, (b) insight into interpersonal situations, (c) utilisation
of social support systems, and (d) multi-disciplinary cooperation. It would
therefore seem that informal caregivers do possess general resistance
resources which enable them to persevere with their tasks as caregivers in
spite of the stressors they encounter on a daily basis.
One of the recommendations that can be posed after having carried out this
study and after having analysed the results, is the compilation as well as the
evaluation and implementation, of a psycho-education training programme for
informal caregivers, with special emphasis on such general resistance
resources. / Thesis (M.A. (Psychology))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2006.

The psychological well-being of persons living with HIV/AIDS in the workplace / Joalane MokhethiMokhethi, Thelma Joalane January 2006 (has links)
The history of HIV/AIDS dates back to 1985, when it was thought to be a disease affecting
animals. Later, HIV/AIDS was regarded as an illness which affected gay individuals.
However, research world-wide has shown that HIV/AIDS is a disease that affects everyone
irrespective of race, gender, social status and sexual orientation. Research regarding the
psychological well-being (coping, sense of coherence, locus of control and general health) of
HIV infected persons in the workplace seems appropriate and relevant.
The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between sense of coherence,
locus of control, coping, and general health. A cross-sectional survey design was used to
achieve research objectives. For the purpose of this study, an availability sample of (n = 91)
HIV infected individuals in the workplace was used. Four questionnaires were employed in
the empirical study, namely the General Health Questionnaire, the Coping Orientations to the
Problems Experienced Questionnaire, the Work Locus of Control Scale, and the Orientation
to Life Questionnaire. Descriptive statistics (means, standard deviations, skewness and
kurtosis) were used to analyse the data. Pearson correlations and canonical analysis were used
to assess the relationships between sense of coherence, locus of control, coping strategies and
general health.
Approach coping strategies such as active coping, planning, seeking support for instrumental
reasons, seeking support for emotional reasons, positive reinterpretation and growth, and
acceptance were positively related to a strong sense of coherence and a low external locus of
control. Avoidance coping strategies, such as focus on and ventilation of emotions, denial,
behavioural disengagement, and mental disengagement were negatively related to sense of
coherence and positively related to an external locus of control. HIV infected employees who
measured high on planning, low on focus on and venting of emotions, and low on mental
disengagement, experienced less anxiety and fewer somatic problems.
Recommendations for future research were made. / Thesis (M.A. (Industrial Psychology))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2007.

The effectiveness of utilising social networking in driving employee engagement / Ivan SwartzSwartz, Ivan Christo January 2010 (has links)
The use of social networks, as a business tool is becoming more and more frequent in
this day and age. Companies are exploring various ways in which to optimise social
media in gaining a competitive advantage. Social platforms give organisations the ability
to communicate better with their staff, to market their products more effectively to
potential customers and also to drive behaviour within the workplace.
Employee engagement, sense of belonging and organisational commitment can be
considered as components of employee well-being. Companies are investing large
amounts of resources to lower employee turnover by creating an environment that is
favourable for the employee.
Within the call centre environment a well established technological infrastructure exists.
This creates a setting that is very prone to launch a social media platform. The average
age of employees is also quite young, which in most cases means that they understand
and interact on social networks with ease. The applications for social media also seems
to become second nature for younger generations and this also speaks volumes as to
implement social network strategies within working environments.
The experimental research design included a pre- and post assessment with samples of
74 employees for the pre-test and 36 employees for the post test. A qualitative and
quantitative approach was utilised in order to gain better insight of what employees
define as social networks and what effect it has on employees. To measure the various
constructs, the following instruments were utilised: Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES), a self-constructed Sense of Belonging Questionnaire and the Affective
Organisational Commitment Questionnaire (AOC).
The results indicated that the exposure to a social network resulted in lower levels of
employee engagement and lower levels of sense of belonging. The exposure to a social
network however increased the levels of participants? affective organisational
commitment. / Thesis (M.B.A.)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2011.

ob insecurity, job satisfaction, affective organisational commitment and sense of coherence in an educational ins[t]itution / Sandra Cristina Rodrigues Barbosa.Barbosa, Sandra Cristina Rodrigues January 2009 (has links)
Organisations are faced with the reality of a constantly changing environment surrounding them. This brings about the need for changes and adaptations to the changing world around them (Rothmann, 2003). These changes are implemented in the form of restructuring, downsizing, mergers, evolving governmental policies and organisational change initiatives, which can result in high costs, lower productions and poor employee wellness (Van Tonder,2005). In South Africa, the organisations have to cope with change and adaptations to the global world which brings about the need for innovation, competitiveness, customer satisfaction and service quality to remain ahead in the industry which can bring strain on employees and the organisation as a whole (Malhotra & Mukherjee, 2003). ln education institutions, teachers have certain demands to cope with which include syllabus changes and growth, personnel shortages, higher student numbers, multi-lingual teaching and increased specialization (Jackson & Rothmann, 2006) The primary objective of this research was to investigate the relationship between job insecurity, job satisfaction, affective organisational commitment and sense of coherence. Contructs were measured by means of the Job Insecurity Questionnaire (JIQ), the Revised Minnesota Job Satisfaction Questionnaire (JSQ), the Organisational Commitment Questionnaire (OCQ), the Orientation to Life Questionnaire (OLQ) and a biographical questionnaire. A cross-sectional survey design was conducted among the 546 employees of various educational institutions in the Sedibeng District of Gauteng. A response rate of 315 completed questionnaires was received. No statistically significant relationship was found between job insecurity and job satisfaction, job insecurity and affective organisational commitment, and job insecurity and sense of coherence. There was a practically significant relationship found between job satisfaction, affective organisational commitment, and sense of coherence. Sense of coherence was also found to have no moderating effect on job insecurity and job satisfaction, and job insecurity and affective organisational commitment. Recommendations for the organisation and future research were made. / Thesis (M.A. (Industrial Psychology))--North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2010.
