Postkopulační pohlavní výběr a selekce na fenotyp spermií u vlaštovky obecné / Postcopulatory sexual selection on phenotypic traits in European barn swallows

Sperm phenotype is an essential indicator of the male ejaculate quality and may have a significant impact on male reproductive success. Sperm phenotypes are considerably variable across species but variation is also found among males within species. This thesis examines (1) variation in sperm phenotypes among males in barn swallows (Hirundo rustica), (2) changes in male ejaculate quality with age, (3) relationships between sperm morphology and motility, (4) effects of sperm phenotypes (morphology and motility) on male fertilization success, using a large dataset of 174 observation for 130 males, and (5) the influence of female reproductive environment on sperm motility. From the tested variables, only midpiece length correlated with male age. Older males had shorter midpiece but no relationship between male age and reproductive success was found. Sperm length negatively affected sperm motility and, simultaneosly, relative midpiece length posively correlated with sperm motility. No correlation was found between the male reproductive success and sperm motility, presence of abnormalities, length of outermost tail feathers or age. How is this attraction established? Which signs are characteristic of a good partner? These and many other questions concerning how mate attraction and mate selection work out among humans have been intriguing behavioral scientists. It is well-known that beauty indicates something about a potential mate s health. The odor may indicate a similar assessment, if we can assess how pheromones are integrated into human sexual behavior. However, what is the relation between age preference and body scent evaluation? In order to investigate this question, this study?s objective was identifying evidences which show that olfactory cues might reveal the potential mate s age and that it coincides with the ideal mate s profile. To produce the stimuli, men and women had to wear cotton t-shirts for three nights in order to have their body odor impregnated. After that, opposite-sex individuals evaluated the intensity and attractivity of these odor impregnated tshirts according to two Likert scales (4 points scale for intensity; 7 points scale for attractivity). We found differences between men and women on body scent perception, that indicates a better scent discrimination for women when it concerns the perception of potential mate s age. Another finding was the negative correlation between intensity and attractiveness perception for both sexes. We also verified that mate selection strategies are plural, more than one tactic simultaneously fitting in the same strategy, but all of them are related to differential investment of each sex on their own reproductive success / Por que nos sentimos atra?dos por algumas pessoas e por outras n?o? Facial width-to-height ratio as a cue of threat : An ERP study

The late positive potential (LPP) is an event-related potential (ERP) component associated with increased affective processing. Studies have shown that stimuli with high evolutionary significance (e.g. a threatening face) induce increased activity over centro-parietal areas of the brain. In an electrophysiological context, this is hypothesized to be indexed by greater LPP amplitudes. The facial width-to-height ratio (fWHR) is a facial-masculinity metric which refers to cheekbone width, divided by upper facial height (top of the lip to between the brows). For the first time, LPP amplitudes were examined in subjects upon observing faces with high vs. low facial fWHRs. Prior studies suggest that faces with high fWHRs are perceived as more threatening than faces with low fWHRs. Consequently, fWHR has by some researchers been proposed to serve as a cue of threat. Two separate tasks in the present study were used to investigate this. In the aggression task, males with high fWHRs were judged as more aggressive. Moreover, when put in a threatening context, high fWHR faces also elicited greater LPP amplitudes in subjects compared to faces with low fWHRs. Conversely, in the self-regulation task, differences in LPP amplitudes did not reach significance. In this task, statistical power was low due to few blocks/trials in the ERP experiment and subjects were not primed on threat, which may explain the non-significant results. Taken together, the results provide modest support to the theory that fWHR serve as a cue of threat. Future studies will need to take the present study’s limitations into consideration

Cavidades naturais constituem um recurso reprodutivo monopolizável, cuja disponibilidade determina a intensidade da competição macho-macho que, por sua vez, pode influenciar os custos do cuidado paternal, pois quanto maior o risco de perda do recurso, menor deve ser a freqüência de forrageio dos machos. Fêmeas do opilião Magnispina neptunus utilizam cavidades naturais como sítios de nidificação, que são monopolizados por machos em um sistema de poliginia por defesa de recursos. Após a oviposição, as fêmeas abandonam os ninhos e todo o cuidado parental é exercido pelos machos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da disponibilidade de ninhos sobre a competição intrassexual e os custos do cuidado paternal em M. neptunus. Dois grupos experimentais foram estabelecidos em laboratório: alta (8 ninhos) e baixa (4 ninhos) disponibilidade de sítios reprodutivos. Cada grupo era composto por sete terrários contendo 12 machos e 12 fêmeas. Apesar da redução dos sítios de nidificação ter reduzido o número de machos detentores de ninhos, o tamanho dos indivíduos não exerceu nenhum efeito sobre o sucesso de monopolização de ninhos. Aparentemente, o pequeno diâmetro de entrada dos ninhos experimentais reduz a importância do tamanho dos machos sobre sua probabilidade de monopolizar um sítio de nidificação. Apenas a residência prévia parece determinar o resultado das disputas entre machos e, portanto, os custos de abandonar os ninhos devem ser altos. De fato, machos guardiões permanecem quase todo o tempo dentro dos seus ninhos em ambos os grupos experimentais, o que aumenta os custos do cuidado. Females of the harvestman Magnispina neptunus use natural cavities as nest site, which are monopolized by males in typical resource defense polygyny mating system. After oviposition, females leave the nests and all parental activities are in charge of males. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of nest site availability on the intrasexual competition and the costs of paternal care in M. neptunus. Two experimental groups were established in the laboratory: high (8 nests) and low (4 nests) nest site availability. Each group was composed of seven terraria containing 12 males and 12 females. Although the reduction of in the number of nests sites has indeed reduced the number of males holding nests, male size did not influence the probability of acquiring and maintaining a nest. Apparently, the small diameter of entrance in the experimental nests reduces the importance of male size on their resource holding power. Only previous residence seems to influence the output of agonistic interactions between two males and, therefore, the costs of leaving the nest to forage are likely to be high. In fact, guarding males remain almost all the time inside their nests, which increases the costs of paternal care. As a consequence, filial cannibalism is frequent in both experimental groups because the costs in terms of reduction in clutch size are likely to lower than the benefits of holding a nest containing eggs, which is known to increase male attractiveness and his chance of acquiring additional eggs

O cuidado paternal exclusivo à prole é a forma mais rara de investimento parental pós-zigótico na natureza, tendo evoluído independentemente em não mais do que 14 linhagens de artrópodes. Embora muitas dessas espécies sejam facilmente observadas e manipuladas, apenas recentemente os pesquisadores começaram a prestar atenção e a testar hipóteses sobre investimento parental e evolução de papéis sexuais nesses interessantes sistemas biológicos. O principal objetivo desta tese foi investigar características individuais e populacionais que poderiam afetar o sucesso reprodutivo de machos de opiliões (Arachnida: Opiliones) com cuidado paternal. No primeiro capítulo, fazemos uma revisão teórica detalhada, desde trabalhos clássicos de papéis sexuais até os mais recentes avanços, abordando também de maneira sistemática o conhecimento atual acerca de custos e benefícios do cuidado paternal em artrópodes, assim como o papel da seleção sexual sobre a evolução do comportamento parental e dos papéis sexuais. Em seguida, nos capítulos 2 e 3, acessamos os custos energéticos e em termos de sobrevivência do cuidado paternal nos opiliões Iporangaia pustulosa e Zygopachylus albomarginis. Comparando essas duas espécies, que apresentam diferentes níveis de investimento paternal, testamos previsões direcionadas de que os machos que investem mais na prole deveriam pagar maiores custos do cuidado. No quarto capítulo, por meio de informações da história natural e parâmetros populacionais estimados para I. pustulosa, fazemos previsões sobre qual dos sexos deveria ser criterioso ao escolher parceiros e as testamos utilizando observações comportamentais de interações entre machos e fêmeas. Por fim, no capítulo 5, avaliamos a importância relativa do sítio de oviposição, assim como do tamanho e do estado parental dos machos sobre a sua atratividade. Although many of those species are easily observed and manipulated, only recently researchers have started to pay attention and test hypotheses on parental investment and evolution of sex roles in such interesting biological systems. The main goal of this thesis was investigating individual and population characteristics that affect the reproductive success of males of harvestmen (Arachnida: Opilioes) with paternal care. In the first chapter, we revise the theory in details, since seminal works on sex roles until the most recent advances in the area, sistematically approaching the current knowledge abot costs and benefits of paternal care in arthropods, as well as the role of sexual selection on the evolution of parental behavior and sex roles. Then, in chapters 2 and 3, we access energetic and survival costs of paternal care in the harvestmen Iporangaia pustulosa and Zygopachylus albomarginis. Comparing these two species, that show different levels of parental investment, we test directional predictions that males which invest more should also pay more intense costs rekated to care. In the fourth chapter, based on natural history information and population parameters for I. pustulosa, we predict which sex should be choosier when selecting sexual partners, and test such predictions using behavioral data on male-female interactions. Finally, in chapter 5, we evaluate the relative importance of oviposition site, males\' body size and males\' parental state on their attractiveness. At the end, we integrate all the results obtained during the five chapters into a theoretical framework about the inter-dependence among trade-offs between parental and mating efforts, paternal care and sex roles, not only regarding the pair od species studied, but in a broad way.

O objetivo geral desta tese foi investigar como a distribuição espacial dos indivíduos influencia a organização dos sistemas de acasalamento e a intensidade da seleção sexual. A tese contém dois capítulos em que analisamos dados empíricos e dois capítulo em que abordamos questões mais teóricas mais gerais. No primeiro capítulo, avaliamos como a distribuição espacial de haréns defendidos por machos territoriais influencia a rede de competição espermática que existe entre machos do opilião Serracutisoma proximum. No segundo capítulo, propusemos um modelo probabilístico de escolha de parceiros que leva em consideração o fato de que as fêmeas estão restritas a amostrar apenas alguns machos da população, e que essa restrição é imposta principalmente pela distribuição espacial dos indivíduos. Nosso modelo foi mais acurado do que modelos alternativos que ignoram o espaço. No terceiro capítulo, investigamos os movimentos de busca de parceiros do besouro Leptinotarsa undecimlineata. Encontramos que tanto machos quanto fêmeas se movimentam estrategicamente, saindo de onde estão quando não obtém cópulas buscando áreas próximas e com muitos parceiros em potencial. Finalmente, no quarto capítulo, voltamos a explorar o efeito de restrições espaciais sobre a escolha de parceiros. Usamos simulações baseadas em indivíduos para investigar como a restrição espacial influencia a seleção sexual e a evolução de ornamentos sexualmente selecionados. Encontramos que quanto maior o número de parceiros que as fêmeas podem amostrar durante a escolha, mais intensa é a seleção sexual, o que permite a evolução de ornamentos mais exagerados nos machos. Além disso, analisamos um conjunto de dados publicados sobre a intensidade de seleção sexual e observamos que estes se ajustam às previsões do modelo teórico. Concluímos que o espaço é muito mais importante para a organização de sistemas de acasalamento e para a intensidade da seleção sexual do que se acreditava previamente. Esperamos que as idéias propostas aqui encontrem terreno fértil na mente do leitor e que gerem novos e estimulantes desdobramentos no campo teórico e empírico / The main goal of this thesis was to investigate how the spatial distribution of individuals influences the organization of the mating systems and the intensity of sexual selection. The thesis contains two empirical chapters and two chapters with a theoretical scope. In the first chapter, we investigate how the spatial distribution of harems defended by territorial males influences the sperm competition network among males of the harvestman Serracutisoma proximum. In the second chapter, we proposed a probabilistic model of mate choice that includes the spatial constraint in the analyses of mate choice. This model takes into account the fact that females are restricted to sample only some males available in the population, and that this restriction is imposed primarily by the spatial distribution of individuals. In the third chapter, we investigate the mate searching movements of the leaf beetle Leptinotarsa undecimlineata. We found that both males and females move strategically, leaving the host plant when they do not obtain copulations and seeking neighboring areas with many potential mates. Finally, in the fourth chapter, we explore the effect of spatial restrictions on mate choice. We used individual based simulations to investigate how spatial restrictions influence sexual selection and the evolution of sexually selected ornaments. We found that the higher the number of potential partners female can sample during mate choice, the more intense is sexual selection, which leads to the evolution of more exaggerated male ornaments. In addition, we analyzed a published dataset of intensity of sexual selection and found that the data adjust to the predictions made by our simulations. We conclude that the space is much more important than previously thought to mating systems organization and the intensity of sexual selection. We hope the ideas proposed here can flourish in the minds of the readers, stimulating both empirical and theoretical follow ups

Depuis 157 ans et la publication originelle de la théorie de l’évolution par sélection naturelle de Charles Darwin, ce concept n’a cessé d’évoluer. Un principe fondamental suggère que des traits handicapants aient évolués dans la mesure où ils informent de manière honnête les congénères sur la qualité intrinsèque du porteur. Le manchot royal est un modèle exceptionnel permettant de tester la valeur sélective de ce signal dans un contexte sexuel et social (non-reproductif). Mes résultats suggèrent que l’apparition et le maintien de certains de ces traits au cours de l’évolution se sont opérés sous l’influence de la sélection sexuelle et d’un choix mutuel du partenaire, tandis que d’autre, non contraint par la condition fluctuante de l’individu, aurait évolué sous l’influence de la sélection sociale. Ce travail de recherche participe à la compréhension des mécanismes impliqués dans l’évolution de signaux coûteux, et à la nature des bénéfices ultimes que ces traits procurent. / Darwin’s seminal theory of evolution by means of natural selection, first published 157 years ago, has been in constant refinement ever since. The production and maintenance of extravagant ornaments is widely suggested to evolve by conspecific preference providing information on individual intrinsic quality in sexual contexts or on individual social quality in non-reproductive contexts. The king penguin is a monomorphic bird species and an outstanding model to study ornament evolution. My results show that those ornaments are partly condition-dependent, and reliable traits that may be used to assess the quality of a potential sexual partner, implying that their evolution and maintenance is partly determined by sexual selection. On the other hand, some traits remained condition-independent in their production, suggesting that the cost associated with their expression was deferred over time and the evolution of those ornaments likely shaped by non-sexual social selection.

Choisir un partenaire est une décision importante pour les organismes à reproduction sexuée. Une possibilité est de copier le choix d'autres individus, c'est ce que l'on appelle l'imitation du choix du partenaire, phénomène bien étudié chez les vertébrés, mais peu connu chez les invertébrés. Cette thèse porte sur l'imitation du choix du partenaire chez la drosophile (Drosophila melanogaster). J'ai tout d'abord montré que les femelles pouvaient être influencées dans leur choix par l'observation d'une seule autre femelle et que ceci était corrélé avec la pression atmosphérique. J'ai ensuite étudié si la préférence pour un type de mâle pouvait être transmise au sein de la population. Enfin j'ai commencé un travail exploratoire pour identifier les molécules impliquées dans ce processus d'imitation. Ces résultats montrent que les drosophiles peuvent exprimer des comportements complexes conduisant potentiellement à la transmission culturelle, l'isolement reproductif et la spéciation. / Mate choice is a major fitness-affecting decision in sexually reproducing organisms. A form of mate choice is mate copying, in which females choose potential mates by copying the mate choice of conspecifics. While many studies documented mate copying in vertebrates, little is known about this behaviour in invertebrates. In this thesis, I studied mate copying in Drosophila melanogaster females. I showed that female flies can build a sexual preference for one male characteristic after witnessing a single mate choice event and that the efficiency of mate copying correlates with air pressure and its variations. Then I studied the characteristics of mate copying to see whether a preference for one type of male can be transmitted into the population. Finally I tried to find some molecules that could be involved in this behaviour. These results indicate that fruit flies can express complex behaviour, which can potentially lead to cultural transmission, reproductive isolation and speciation.

The mechanisms underlying convergent evolution in the plumage patterns of birds

Convergent evolution is a central theme in biology. Birds are an ideal system to examine the mechanisms underlying convergent evolution. Although bird patterning is diverse, within-feather patterns have repeatedly converged on the same four types: mottled patterns, scales, bars and spots. Other avian patterns occur, e.g. stripes, but are rare. In my thesis I examine the four main mechanisms underlying convergent evolution in plumage patterns: evolutionary genetics, evolutionary development, natural selection for signaling and camouflage. Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) is a model system in developmental biology. Examining the developmental basis of pattern formation using molecular techniques, the dorsal patterning of embryonic quail is likely due to activation of the melanocortin-1 receptor, which is a highly conserved pathway in vertebrates. I examined whether a reaction-diffusion based theoretical model of pattern formation may predict developmental constraint in two groups that have different lifestyles and spectacular patterns: waterfowl (Anseriformes) and gamebirds (Galliformes). Tracing the evolutionary trajectory of pattern evolution with Bayesian comparative modeling there was evidence for developmental constraint in pattern evolution. Adaptive explanations may also result in convergence. Cuckoo-hawk mimicry has been demonstrated in the common cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) and the Eurasian sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus), but may be prevalent in Old World cuckoos. Randomly selecting a parasitic cuckoo from each genera of Old World cuckoos and <8 sympatric raptors, I quantified their barred patterns using digital image analysis and found that parasitism can explain convergent evolution in the patterns of parasitic cuckoos and raptors. Patterns may have evolved due to ecological selection. Examining the patterns of 80% of all avian species worldwide, I found that habitat does not predict patterning, and that all four patterns are found in all habitats. These results demonstrate that the mechanisms of convergent evolution are diverse, and that development and natural selection have contributed to pattern evolution.

Mate Choice, Mate Sampling And Baffling Behaviour In The Tree Cricket Oecanthus henryi

Among the different sensory modalities that play a role in sexual selection, acoustic communication plays an important one. Acoustic communication has been known to be used for male-male competition (territory maintenance, male aggression during mating),for advertisement to the opposite sex (mating status, body condition, genetic quality, nutritional status) and used by females to sample and choose conspecific preferred males. The use of acoustic communication for sexual display and information exchange has been extensively studied in multiple taxa, including insects, anurans, birds and mammals. Among insects, crickets have proven to be good model systems to study sexual selection based on acoustic communication as most species have an elaborate acoustic communication system, male advertisements, diverse types of mating incentives for females (such as glandular feeding) and a female dominated mating system. Generally, in crickets males produce species-specific calls which are used by females to localize conspecific males. Besides, calls show high levels of intraspecific variation and are energetically costly to produce. Moreover, as in crickets predominantly the females show phonotaxis towards male calls, calls also can play a role in mate sampling and choice by acting as indicators of preferred male quality. Despite being studied for many decades there are certain gaps in the studies examining mate choice in crickets. Some of them are, lack of understanding of the variation of male calling traits in nature and its role in signal evolution, lack of understanding regarding the ecological context of mate sampling and the evolution of alternative mating strategies. Hence, the tree cricket Oecanthus henryi was chosen as a study system to address these gaps in the understanding of female choice based on acoustic signals. In the tree cricket Oecanthus henryi, males call and females use calls to localize conspecific males and hence potentially females can choose males based on acoustic cues. To understand the evolution of female preference for male acoustic cues it is important to understand the variation in the calling songs in the field and identify repeatable call features that are reliable indicators of preferred male traits (morphological, developmental or genetic). I measured repeatability of male call traits in the field to understand their variation, reliability and consistency. Carrier frequency was the only call trait that was highly repeatable and hence was reliable and consistent. Following this I examined whether any of these call traits were indicators of male morphological traits (such as male size and fluctuating asymmetry) which are known to be preferred by females. It was found that carrier frequency was negatively correlated with body size; hence carrier frequency was both reliable and indicated male size. Calling males of O. henryi showed high site fidelity within a night, potentially enabling female sampling strategies that require recall. To examine the possibility of simultaneous acoustic sampling of males, I estimated male acoustic active spaces using information on male spacing, call transmission and female phonotactic threshold. Males were found to be spaced far apart and active space overlap was rare. I then examined female sampling scenarios by studying female spacing relative to male acoustic active spaces. Only 15% of sampled females could hear multiple males, suggesting that simultaneous mate sampling is rare in the field. Moreover, the relatively large distances between calling males suggest high search costs, which may favor threshold strategies that do not require memory. Using the insights gathered from these two studies I examined a unique calling behaviour from leaf holes, baffling, observed in this species. Baffling behaviour has been found in multiple species of the genus Oecanthus where the males call from selfmade holes in leaves rather than calling from leaf edges (their natural calling surface) thus increasing their loudness many fold. I started by examining the natural history of baffling and found that baffling is an extremely rare behaviour in the field. However field observations and laboratory experiments revealed that many males can baffle and hence it is not an obligatory behaviour shown only by a few males. It was hypothesized that one reason for the rarity of baffling could be resource limitation. It was found that baffling males prefer larger leaves possibly due to higher SPL gains achieved by baffling on the larger leaves, which is a limited resource in the field. However this alone was insufficient to explain extreme rarity of bafflers in the field. Hence I examined which males were using this behaviour in the field. Using field observations and laboratory experiments it was found that less preferred males (smaller and quieter) baffled more which provided them with higher calling SPL and greater sound-field volume and thus a higher number of potential mates. Moreover, baffling also increased the mating duration for the less preferred males thus providing more time to these males for sperm transfer. The females could not differentiate between an inherently loud caller and a caller whose SPL was increased artificially (as if it was baffling). Hence I concluded that baffling is probably a cheater strategy used by the less preferred males to fool the females into approaching them and mating for longer durations. To my knowledge, this is the first study that has estimated male call variation in the field to understand its role in female choice in tree crickets. Moreover this is also the first study to examine the ecological context of mate choice in tree crickets. The use of acoustic communication for sexual display and information exchange has been extensively studied in multiple taxa, including insects, anurans, birds and mammals. Among insects, crickets have proven to be good model systems to study sexual selection based on acoustic communication as most species have an elaborate acoustic communication system, male advertisements, diverse types of mating incentives for females (such as glandular feeding) and a female dominated mating system. Generally, in crickets males produce species-specific calls which are used by females to localize conspecific males. Besides, calls show high levels of intraspecific variation and are energetically costly to produce. Moreover, as in crickets predominantly the females show phonotaxis towards male calls, calls also can play a role in mate sampling and choice by acting as indicators of preferred male quality. Some of them are, lack of understanding of the variation of male calling traits in nature and its role in signal evolution, lack of understanding regarding the ecological context of mate sampling and the evolution of alternative mating strategies. Hence, the tree cricket Oecanthus henryi was chosen as a study system to address these gaps in the understanding of female choice based on acoustic signals.
