Drawing out interaction : lines around shared space

Heath, Claude P. R. January 2014 (has links)
Despite advances in image, video, and motion capture technologies, human interactions are frequently represented as line drawings. Intuitively, drawings provide a useful way of filtering complex, dynamic sequences to produce concise representations of interaction. They also make it possible to represent phenomena such as topic spaces, that do not have a concrete physical manifestation. However, the processes involved in producing these drawings, the advantages and limitations of line drawings as representations, and the implications of drawing as an analytic method have not previously been investigated. This thesis explores the use of drawings to represent human interaction and is informed by the prior experience and abilities of the investigator as a practising visual artist. It begins by discussing the drawing process and how it has been used to capture human activities. Key drawing techniques are identified and tested against an excerpt from an interaction between architects. A series of new drawings are constructed to depict one scene from this interaction, highlighting the contrasts between each drawing technique and their impact on the way shared spaces are represented. A second series of original drawings are produced exploring new ways of representing these spaces, leading to a proposal for a field-based approach that combines gesture paths, fields, and human figures to create a richer analytic representation. A protocol for using this approach to analyse video in practice is developed and evaluated though a sequence of three participatory workshops for researchers in human interaction. The results suggest that the field based process of drawing facilitates the production of spatially enriched graphical representations of qualitative spaces. The thesis concludes that the use of drawing to explore non-metric approaches to shared interactional space, has implications for research in human interaction, interaction design, clinical psychology, anthropology, and discourse analysis, and will find form in new new approaches to contemporary artistic practice.

Peripersonal space in the humanoid robot iCub

Ramírez Contla, Salomón January 2014 (has links)
Developing behaviours for interaction with objects close to the body is a primary goal for any organism to survive in the world. Being able to develop such behaviours will be an essential feature in autonomous humanoid robots in order to improve their integration into human environments. Adaptable spatial abilities will make robots safer and improve their social skills, human-robot and robot-robot collaboration abilities. This work investigated how a humanoid robot can explore and create action-based representations of its peripersonal space, the region immediately surrounding the body where reaching is possible without location displacement. It presents three empirical studies based on peripersonal space findings from psychology, neuroscience and robotics. The experiments used a visual perception system based on active-vision and biologically inspired neural networks. The first study investigated the contribution of binocular vision in a reaching task. Results indicated the signal from vergence is a useful embodied depth estimation cue in the peripersonal space in humanoid robots. The second study explored the influence of morphology and postural experience on confidence levels in reaching assessment. Results showed that a decrease of confidence when assessing targets located farther from the body, possibly in accordance to errors in depth estimation from vergence for longer distances. Additionally, it was found that a proprioceptive arm-length signal extends the robot’s peripersonal space. The last experiment modelled development of the reaching skill by implementing motor synergies that progressively unlock degrees of freedom in the arm. The model was advantageous when compared to one that included no developmental stages. The contribution to knowledge of this work is extending the research on biologically-inspired methods for building robots, presenting new ways to further investigate the robotic properties involved in the dynamical adaptation to body and sensing characteristics, vision-based action, morphology and confidence levels in reaching assessment.

Silva Júnior, Antônio Pedro da January 2007 (has links)
This research approaches the nature and development of space geometric logic involved in both manual and digital graphic representation of tree dimension objects. The research data was collected by analyzing the attitudes, the drawings of the Orthographic Views and the construction of a tree dimension Geometric Modeling on AutoCAD, presented during interviews with “Design de Móveis” students from CEFET/RS. Psychogenetic studies of Piaget on Mental Image and Space Representation were used as basic tools on the analysis of the collected data. It was possible to verify the presence of space relations on the mental image construction of the objects presented during the interviews. Through this evidence, it was possible to investigate how the projective and Euclidian relations coordinate with each other in a way to guarantee their graphic representations. It was verified that the drawings presented depend on the operating geometric logic evolution, respecting the development of the epistemic subject. It is believed that the study on the cognitive processes, engendered in the act of representing objects graphically, contributes to the Graphic Expression education by helping to provide more adequate materials and didactic resources, also in drawing curricular programs and graphic computation, towards a constructivist perspective of learning.

Conceptual Analysis Of Tourism: The Case Of Marmaris Town In Turkey

Tataroglu, Enis Guvenc 01 April 2006 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis is concerned with the conceptual analysis of tourism and its evaluation from various perspectives in a tourist town. Tourism in this study is addressed as a space-based phenomenon compromising the activities supplying the cultural sphere to the international market. In this respect, tourism is evaluated as the integrity of social, cultural and material interventions germane to the construction, production and consumption of difference on the basis of the relationships of global and local processes. On this account tourism leads to social and cultural transitions on destination communities. In this process, nature, history, cultural assets and way of life become the subject to the production and consumption of tourism system through the interventions including representational, material and even the performance of actors. Because of its multidimensional characteristics, this thesis also evaluates tourism as a contested and controversial process stemming from the differences among various sections of local community. The findings of this study show that the metaphors of &rsquo / nature&rsquo / , &lsquo / tradition&rsquo / , &lsquo / cosmopolitism&rsquo / and &lsquo / bridge&rsquo / are remarkable in constructing Marmaris and environs. The spatial regulation in which tourist and local relationships are actualized have been emphasized as the distinctive characteristics of Marmaris, which brings about the consequence that local community participates in the tourism process via their performance. Besides, it has been put forward that because the distinctions between tourism and non-tourism is blurred and because various issues regarding tourism are evaluated in relation with identity, locality, tradition and culture, Marmaris has become a contested space.

Ventorini, Silvia Elena. January 2007 (has links)
Abstract: This paper discusses the use of the Tactile Model System /Mapavox by three groups of students: the blind; the visually impaired and the students with normal vision, under the perspective of an analysis of non comparative results. The goals of the work went investigate as the blind and visually impaired organize the objects in the space and that strategies use to constitute its representations. The theoretical basis brings authors who performed researches on the motor and cognitive development of blind children as well as their relation to space without comparing it to that of people with no visual impairment. The results obtained indicate that the blind and visually impaired subjects have a different spatial organization than those with normal vision and the adaptation of Cartographic didactic materials for the visually impaired does not consist of just substituting colors for texture, or using contoured relieves and or inserting information in Braille and amplified conventional writing. Thus, the content approach of both Geography and Cartography cannot have as a referential the perception and spatial organization of individuals with normal vision. The analysis of the results aims that the forms of organization of the space subjects bring the marks of its experiences. / Orientador: Maria Isabel Castreghini de Freitas / Coorientador: José Antônio dos Santos Borges / Banca: Katia Regina Moreno Caiado / Banca: Rosângela Doin de Almeida / Mestre

It is a space composed by events, experiences, behavior, symbology, manners related to how to live and see the world. It is developed from historical processes and layers of discourses that contact each other, compete among themselves, establish agreement, promote consensus which define, resignify and update them over time. The present paper seeks to analyze and discuss the forms in which discourses produced by cordel literature? sold and consumed in popular locations, from backlands to coast cities, during the first four decades of 20th century, represented the environment, habits, moral codes, cultural traits, social types, rites and beliefs, related to northeastern backlands. The paper also aims to investigate the forms on how discourses produced by representations contributed to the constitution of backlands as a space culturally constructed. Poems from the poet and editor Jo?o Martins de Athayde will be used to establish dialogues between discourses produced by cordel and others discursive modalities, such as, newspapers, prose literature, painting, texts of memoirists and historiography, about backlands, analyzing how those representations circulated, were consumed and absorbed by backlands and other spaces inhabitants, contacted and agreed with other types of discourse, supporting the establishment of backlands as a space and countryside people as a social type / O sert?o n?o ? apenas espa?o geogr?fico circunscrito por fronteiras fisicamente estabelecidas. The space approaches intended by the critic groups of the Geography Innovative Movements (Movimentos de Renovação da Geografia) bring back the understanding that the space representations should include the expertise and know-how originated from the knowledge that space experience offers us and that represent the rescue of the Geography social commitment. We will only be able to change the worlds through the development of critical conscience, if, we democratically, give all voice, once each of us have something to add to the knowledge about the space. We believe that better comprehension of reality depends on the consciousness over our pedagogic practice, thus, being responsible for our educational actions, we´ll be able to make true the ideal defended by the Contemporary Geography, which is the wide comprehension of the reality.
