Étude expérimentale du phénomène de l’endommagement et de la fissuration d’une matrice poreuse / Experimental study of the damage phenomenon and cracking of a porous media

Ighil Ameur, Lamine 09 December 2016 (has links)
D'autre part, la déformation de la zone tendue de la poutrelle atteint sa valeur critique lorsque la contrainte atteint la résistance maximale à la traction de l'argile / The objective of this experimental research is to contribute to understanding phenomena of damage and cracking in saturated clay soils under hydric loading (desiccation) and mechanical loading (stress paths). Mechanical study focuses on identifying the elastic properties of the damaged material under triaxial loading at different levels and stress paths. The main issues were the influence of; the consolidation stress (p'ic), the overconsolidation ratio (OCR) and the stress path on the compression wave velocity. The results show that the elastic properties are affected and evolve with strain. Contractancy appears to increase the compression wave velocity as p'ic increase and densifies the material. However, dilatancy seems rather decrease the compression wave velocity. Moreover, various triaxial paths performed at a given stress level showed that the wave velocities are very close if the paths are normally consolidated. Velocities are also close if the paths are overconsolidated. However, at the same stress state, the wave velocity is different when comparing a normally consolidated path with an overconsolidated path. The second part of the study focuses on a thorough analysis of the cracks' initiation and propagation mechanisms under free and controlled desiccation on initial saturated clay. Analysis via the digital image correlation (DIC) allowed, first, a multi-scales characterization of the shrinkage phenomenon operated during drying. Different phenomena were identified; the relaxation phenomenon characterized by a change of the local strain's sign extension / compression, the cracking mechanism by extension (mode I) identified by the map of the directions of the principal strains. The study was completed with indirect tensile tests by bending performed on kaolin k13 beams initially submitted to different suctions. The effect of the initial suction on the tensile strength has been observed. The results show that more the initial suction is high, the greater the slope of the curve of changes in the tensile strength is high. On the other hand, strain of the tension zone of the beam reaches its critical value when the stress reaches the maximum tensile strength of the clay

[en] SHEAR STRENGTH OF AN UNSATURATED COLLUVIUM SOIL FROM RIO DE JANEIRO, RJ / [pt] RESISTÊNCIA AO CISALHAMENTO DE UM SOLO COLUVIONAR NÃO SATURADO DO RIO DE JANEIRO, RJ

RICARDO MOREIRA SOARES 25 August 2005 (has links)
[en] In this present work one searched to evaluate the characteristics of shear strength and the suction-moisture relation of a tropical mature soil found in experimental field II of PUC-Rio, located in the city of Rio de Janeiro. For the determination of the shear strength of this soil, direct shear test in submerged samples using conventional equipment and direct shear tests with controlled suction in samples with natural moisture had been executed. The direct shear tests with controlled suction had been executed using the equipment developed in PUC-Rio for De Campos (1988), in which it uses the technique of translation of axles developed by Hilf (1956) for the control of the applied suction. Tests for the measurement of the suction which uses the filter paper method was carried through for the determination of the suction-moisture relation. Through the results of this test, the determination of the soil-water characteristic curve of this soil was possible. Diametrical compression test had also been carried through in order to establish a relation between the tensile strength of this soil versus its suction. Through the analysis of the experimental results, the determination of the shear strength envelope in tri-dimensions was possible considering the proposal of Fredlund et al. (1978), on which it bases on the use of the variables of tension (normal tension n - ua) and (ua - uw).

Generally, in these examples, the soils are in unsaturated state. The main objective of this study is to assess and refine the mechanistic approach to predict the changing conditions of suction and moisture of a soil profile unsaturated. Three methods for predicting soil-water characteristic curve were evaluated, and a new method was proposed. The prediction methods, examined in this study, are based on particle size and other index properties. Were considered the soil of the experimental field of Furnas in Aparecida de Goiania (Goiás - Brazil), the soil of the experimental field of the University of Brasilia and soils of temperate climate. Good results were obtained from the prediction methods used. Were monitored for six months, the water content, suction, groundwater and atmospheric conditions of the experimental field of Furnas. The water content was obtained by removal of soil samples and suction was obtained by two measuring methods: filter paper and tensiometer. A device for installation and under the filter paper in the field was developed. The method of the paper filter had good results of total suction and the use of a tensiometer allowed measurements of a limited range of matric suction. Water content and suction predictions were made for the experimental field of Furnas from numerical analysis. It considered soil-water characteristic curves experimental and provided in numerical analysis. It have found most difficult to predict suction and moisture for the shallowest depth analyzed.

Punção ecoendoscópica de massas sólidas pancreáticas por técnica de pressão negativa versus capilaridade: estudo prospectivo e randomizado / Negative pressure versus capillarity for EUS-FNA of pancreatic solid mass: a prospective and randomized trial

Spencer Cheng 02 August 2018 (has links)
Application of negative pressure (NP) during EUS-FNA has the purpose of holding tissue against the cutting edge of the needle as it is moved through the lesion leading to cell detachment and drawing them up. Capillary (CP) sampling is another technique that removes the needle stylet gradually and continuously during the EUS-FNA and seems to have comparable results with less blood and clot aspiration. AIM: Analyze diagnostic yield of EUS-FNA of pancreatic solid mass using NP versus CP and evaluate cytological qualitative and semi-quantitative features of cellularity and blood contamination of each group. METHOD: A total of 50 patients were randomized for NP or CP EUSFNA with a standard 22G needle. Each patient had four passes using NP and CP in an alternate fashion. Computer randomization generated two groups. Group A (NP, CP, NP, CP) and group B (CP, NP, CP, NP). RESULTS: Diagnostic yield of NP versus CP had no statistical difference (p=0.344). Both techniques (NP+CP) was superior to CP alone (p=0.016), but not to NP alone (p=0.25). Sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of NP vs CP were 95.2% vs 92.3%; 100% vs 100%; 95.7% vs 93%, respectively. Results for sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of both NP+CP were 95.6%, 100% and 96%. Positive predictive value was high for all techniques (100%) and Negative predictive value for NP, CP and both techniques were 66.7%, 57.1% and 66.7%, respectively. NP and CP smears and cell blocks had no statistical differences in qualitative and semi-quantitative citological evaluation for cellularity and bloodiness (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: NP versus CP in EUS-FNA of solid pancreatic mass yielded similar overall outcomes in terms of diagnostic performance, however the combination of both techniques is superior, particularly compared to CP alone. Cellularity and bloodiness are equivalent no matter which technique (NP or CP) or type of cytological preparation (smear or cell block) is used

Etude de l'effet des fines et de la teneur en eau sur le comportement hydromécanique des matériaux granulaires / Experimental study and modelling of the elastoplastic behaviour of unbound granular materials under large number of cyclic loadings at various initial hydric states

Jing, Peng 09 March 2017 (has links)
Granular materials are often used in low traffic pavement structures as unbound granular base and sub-base layers. The objective of this context is a better understanding of hydromechanical behaviour (deformation behaviour mainly) of the unsaturated granular materials under repeated loading taking into account the various coupled effects: water content and fine content. A series of RLTTs are conducted with the different remolded Missillac sand samples at different water contents and fine contents to characterize the permanent and resilient deformation behaviour. Besides, the soil water retention curves (SWRCs) are obtained by suction measurement. Then, based on the experimental results, the existing permanent and resilient deformation models are improved to accommodate to the changeable fine content and water content. In the end, the shakedown behaviour of Missillac sand is estimated with the effects of fine content and water content.

Porovnání hydraulických vlastností kavernózně zvětralých hornin do tvarů tafoni a voštin / Comparison of hydraulic characteristics of cavernous weathering rocks forming tafoni and honeycombs

Studencová, Alžběta January 2017 (has links)
Forms of cavernous weathering - tafoni and honeycombs - belong to long-term investigated and discussed phenomena in geology. The reason for the difference in size between few centimetres- long honeycombs and the several-metres-long tafoni has not been yet studied. In my master thesis I compared the hydraulic properties of rocks with developed honeycombs and tafoni. The research consists of field measurements (measurement of suction pressures and capillary water absorption using Karsten tube) and laboratory measurements on tafoni and honeycomb samples (retention curve measurement, capillary water absorption, water vapour diffusion rate and saturated hydraulic conductivity). I have been studing honeycombs from various sites in the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin and tafoni from three different sites: Carbon Arkoses near Kralupy nad Vltavou, Cambrian Sandstone in Petra (Jordan) and Tunnel Spring Tuff in Crystal Peak (Utah). The measurements showed that values of suction pressure are far higher inside tafoni than inside honeycombs. This observation corresponds to different retention curves of studied rocks: steeper retention curve for honeycomb's quartz sandstone than for fine-grained arkosic sandstones to arkoses with tafoni. In the other part of my research I have compared the properties of hydrophobic...

Experimental Study on the Engineering Properties of Gelfill

Abdul-Hussain, Najlaa January 2011 (has links)
Gelfill (GF) is made of tailings, water, binder and chemical additives (Fillset, sodium silicate gel). The components of GF are combined and mixed on the surface and transported (by gravity and/or pumping) to the underground mine workings, where the GF can be used for both underground mine support and tailings storage. Thermal (T), hydraulic (H), and mechanical (M) properties are important performance criteria of GF. The understanding of these engineering properties and their evolution with time are still limited due to the fact that GF is a new cemented backfill material. In this thesis, the evolution of the thermal, hydraulic, mechanical, and microstructural properties of small GF samples are determined. Various binder contents of Portland cement type I (PCI) are used. The GF is cured for 3, 7, 28, 90, and 120 days. It is found that the thermal, hydraulic and mechanical properties are time-dependent or affected by the degree of binder hydration index. Furthermore, a relationship is found between the compressive strength and the saturated hydraulic conductivity of the GF samples. The unsaturated hydraulic properties of GF samples have also been investigated. The outcomes show that unsaturated hydraulic conductivity is influenced by the degree of binder hydration index and binder content, especially at low suction ranges. Simple functions are proposed to predict the evolution of air-entry values (AEVs), residual water content, and fitting parameters from the van Genuchten model with the degree of hydration index (α). Furthermore, two columns are built to simulate the coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) behaviour of GF under drained and undrained conditions. The obtained results from the GF columns are compared with the small samples. It is observed that the mechanical properties, hydraulic properties (suction and water content), and temperature development are strongly coupled. The magnitude of these THM coupling factors is affected by the size of the GF. The findings also show that the mechanical, hydraulic and thermal properties of the GF columns are different from samples cured in plastic moulds.
