<p>Supply chain management addresses the management of materials and</p><p>information across the entire chain from suppliers to producers,</p><p>distributors, retailers, and customers. In the past few decades, scholars</p><p>gave ample attention about the impact of inventory on Supply Chain</p><p>Management (SCM). Roughly speaking, research on supply chain management has</p><p>been mainly focused on three major issues. One is the behavior of</p><p>information flow; the second issue deals with inventory management; the</p><p>third issue is orientated to planning and operations management. In this</p><p>paper the second issue, namely inventory management will be discussed. The</p><p>author will follow the phases of classifying inventory; identify cost</p><p>factors; assess cost components; calculate EOQ; giving suggestion and</p><p>effect of inventory on supply chain will be discussed. The result is going</p><p>to become clear under the analysis of two alternatives by using MCDM</p><p>(Multiple Criteria Decision Making) method. The conclusion is when</p><p>optimizing the inventory management, both up stream and down stream</p><p>activities will run effectively.</p>

Enligt Carlsson och Rönnqvist (2005) och Frayret et al. (2007) blir det allt viktigare att arbeta med supply chain management inom trävaruindustrin. En utmaning är att finna ett arbetssätt för att hantera variationen i kundens efterfrågan. Idag hanteras variationen oftast genom onödigt stor lagerhållning (Lee et al., 1997b; So och Zheng, 2003). Syftet med studien är att utreda påverkande faktorer som bidrar till en varierande efterfrågan inom trävaruindustrin samt föreslå hur uppkomsten av dessa kan undvikas. För att svara på syftet har tre frågeställningar tagits fram och en fallstudie genomfördes på ett hyvleri. Informationsinsamlingen har skett genom intervjuer av anställda från olika avdelningar samt litteraturstudier. Studien visar att det finns flera utmaningar när det är stor variation på efterfrågan såsom brist på tillgång till prognoser och kommunikationsbrist med kunder. Det medför att planeringen av råvaruåtgången försvåras och det leder till svårigheter att uppnå leveransprecision. Slutsatsen visar att de påverkande faktorer som bidrar till en varierad efterfrågan är prisvariationer, orderstorlek och orderfrekvens. Prisvariationer kan undvikas genom ABC-indelning av produkterna utifrån produktefterfrågan. Prognoser underlättar uppskattning av efterfrågan men för ett fungerande prognosarbete krävs samsyn, nära relation samt god kommunikation mellan kund och leverantör. Problem med orderstorlek och orderfrekvens kan reduceras om kunden får avgöra orderstorleken utan att specifika krav måste uppfyllas. Slutsatsen visar även att faktorer såsom väderlek, trender, mode, helgdagar och rotavdragets eventuella försvinnande påverkar variationen i efterfrågan. / According to Carlsson & Rönnqvist (2005) and Frayret et al. (2007) supply chain management in the wood products industry is getting more important. One of the challenges is to find a way to deal with customer’s fluctuating demand. Traditional solution to handle fluctuating demand is large inventory (Lee et al., 1997b; So & Zheng, 2003), which causes often high inventory cost for effective supply chain management. The aim of the study is to investigate factors that affect a fluctuating demand in the wood products industry and suggest how to reduce the fluctuating demand through related factors analysis in order to improve Demand-Supply chain management efficiency. For this pursose, a case study on a planing is conducted. To collect data, interviews with employees from different departments have been made along with literature studies. The study presents that there are many challenges for the fluctuation demand such as lack of forecasts and lack of communication with customers. This, in turn, will cause problems with planning of the raw material as well as difficulties to deliver the goods on time. The conclusion shows that the factors affecting a fluctuating demand are price variations, the orders batch size and order frequency. Price variations can be improved by ABC classification of the products by product demand. Forecasts will make the estimation of demand easier, although, in order to use forecasts properly a joint vision, close relationships and good communication with customer and supplier is required. Problems regarding batch size and order frequency can be reduced if the customer is allowed to decide the batch size with no specific requirements. The study also shows that factors such as weather, trends, fashion, holidays and disappearance of ROT work affects the fluctuating demand.

This study investigates awareness and importance of, and knowledge about, features of CentrePort Canada, in the eyes of the Winnipeg supply chain community. CentrePort is the inland port located in Winnipeg, Manitoba. A questionnaire focused on features of CentrePort was sent via e-mail to supply chain professionals in the Winnipeg area. This was done through the cooperation of two supply chain organizations and their chapters in Winnipeg. Respondents are aware of certain more heavily advertised aspects of CentrePort. Most of the features are rated relatively important by the respondents. However, the lean alignment of an organization seems to have little impact on the importance of CentrePort’s features, and the respondents are ultimately not confident in their knowledge about CentrePort. While respondents are aware of the physical space that CentrePort occupies, they are very much unaware and uninformed of CentrePort’s nuances. / October 2015

A B S T R A C T
Deregulation of the South African fruit export industry in 1997 caused
fragmentation in the supply chain. This led to significant inefficiencies
and difficulty in responding to increasingly stringent legal and traderelated
traceability requirements. Currently, the South African fruit
export industry does not provide a sufficient level of traceability at
supply chain level.
The consumer packaged goods industry has developed e-commerce building blocks based on global standards. These building blocks offer
automated traceability of fruit exports, as well as significant benefits
impacting the bottom line, to companies of all sizes. The e-commerce
building blocks also provide solutions to the two main challenges faced
by the fresh produce supply chains, namely traceability requirements
and the need for additional efficiencies.
The e-commerce building blocks are available to the South African
fruit export industry to enable traceability, as well as to provide
significant efficiency benefits. It has been found that early adoption of
the e-commerce building blocks will result in a strategic advantage over
the southern hemisphere competitors and that automated traceability is
feasible for the South African fruit export industry. This article describes
the cohesiveness, willingness to participate and supportive thinking of
representatives from the important fruit export industry in South Africa,
which are necessary to create the critical mass for the implementation of
such an automated traceability system.
