Manejo da fertirrigação no cultivo de roseiras em ambiente protegido / Fertigation management in rose crop under a protected environment

Carlos José Gonçalves de Souza Lima 15 April 2013 (has links)
The production of roses in protected environment under fertigation is a technique used by farmers and has expanded considerably, especially in the state of São Paulo, Brazil; this culture, previously limited to the Southeast region of Brazil, today is found in all regions of the country. Proper management of irrigation associated to nitrogenated fertigation is an important factor in productivity parameters and quality of cut roses. The aims of this study was to evaluate the productivity and quality of the flowers in the rose bush, \"Samourai® Meikatana\", variety, under different soil water depletion factors and nitrogen levels applied through fertigation under cultivation in protected environment. The experiment was carried in the experimental area of the Biosystems Engineering Department, School of Agriculture \"Luiz de Queiroz\", in Piracicaba, state of São Paulo, Brazil. Experimental design was a randomized blocks in a 4 x 4 factorial scheme, totaling 16 treatments, with four replications and plot with dimensions of 0.4 x 0.5 x 2.0 m. The treatments consisted of combinations of four nitrogen levels (N1 = 5, N2 = 10, N3 = 15 and N4 = 20 g plant-1 year-1) and four levels of soil water depletion (F1 = 0.15 ; F2 = 0.30, F3 = 0.45 and F4 = 0.60). The application of water and nutrients (fertigation) was performed when the soil water availability reached these percentages. The irrigation system used was drip irrigation adopting management with tensiometers equipped with pressure transducers. Throughout the crop cycle was performed monitoring of electrical conductivity (EC), potential hydrogen (pH) and concentration of nitrate (NO3-) and potassium (K) in the soil solution. The yield, the qualitative parameters of the stems and buds of cut roses, leaf temperature and water potential, water consumption, water productivity, nutrient content in plant tissue and gross income was evaluated. The dose of N which maximizes the commercial production of cut flowers decreases as it extends harvest. The temporary water stress (depletion) negatively affects the quantitative and qualitative parameters of cut roses. The production and quality of cut roses are more affected by nitrogen levels than by the soil water depletion. Leaf temperature and leaf water potential are affected by levels of depletion and are not influenced by the nitrogen levels. The water consumption is affected by both studied factors. Water productivity in cut roses increases due to the N levels and soil water depletion factors. The treatments promoted significant differences in phytomass and content of N > K > Ca > Mg > P > S in plant tissue of the roses floral stems.

Simple Techniques for the Implementation of the Mechanics of Unsaturated Soils into Engineering Practice

Oh, Won Taek 23 November 2012 (has links)
Over the past 50 years, several advancements have been made in the research area of the mechanics of unsaturated soils. These advancements can be categorized into two groups; (i) development (or improvement) of testing techniques (or apparatus) to determine the mechanical properties of unsaturated soils and (ii) development of (numerical, empirical or semi-empirical) models to estimate the variation of mechanical properties of unsaturated soils with respect to suction based on the experimental results. Implementation of the mechanics of unsaturated soils in conventional geotechnical engineering practice, however, has been rather limited. The key reasons for the limited practical applications may be attributed to the lack of simple and reliable methods for (i) measuring soil suction in the field quickly and reliably and (ii) estimating the variation of mechanical properties of unsaturated soils with respect to suction. The main objective of this thesis research is to develop simple and reliable techniques, models or approaches that can be used in geotechnical engineering practice to estimate sol suction and the mechanical properties of unsaturated soils. This research can be categorized into three parts. In the First Part, simple techniques are proposed to estimate the suction values of as-compacted unsaturated fine-grained soils using a pocket penetrometer and a conventional tensiometer. The suction values less than 300 kPa can be estimated using a strong relationship between the compressive strength measured using a pocket penetrometer and matric suction value. The high suction values in the range of 1,200 kPa to 60,000 kPa can be estimated using the unique relationship between the initial tangent of conventional tensiometer response versus time behavior and suction value. In the Second Part, approaches or semi-empirical models are proposed to estimate the variation of mechanical properties of unsaturated soils with respect to suction, which include: - Bearing capacity of unsaturated fine-grained soils - Variation of bearing capacity of unsaturated fine-grained soils with respect to matric suction - Variation of initial tangent elastic modulus of unsaturated soils below shallow foundations with respect to matric suction - Variation of maximum shear modulus with respect to matric suction for unsaturated non-plastic sandy soils (i.e. plasticity index, Ip = 0 %) In the Third Part, approaches (or methodologies) are suggested to simulate the vertically applied stress versus surface settlement behavior of shallow foundations in unsaturated coarse-grained soils assuming elastic-perfectly plastic behavior. These methodologies are extended to simulate the stress versus settlement behavior of both model footings and in-situ plates in unsaturated coarse-grained soils. The results show that there is a reasonably good comparison between the measured values (i.e. soil suction, bearing capacity, elastic and shear modulus) and those estimated using the techniques or models proposed in this thesis research. The models (or methodologies) proposed in this thesis research are promising and encouraging for modeling studies and practicing engineers to estimate the variation of mechanical behavior of unsaturated soils with respect to matric suction.

Resistência ao cisalhamento de um solo não saturado com medida direta de sucção / Shear strength of an unsaturated soil with direct measurement of suction

Freitas Neto, Osvaldo de 08 July 2008 (has links)
The purpose this study was to measure the suction with high capacity tensiometer (HCT), placed at the bottom of the sample, during shear strength tests on a compacted soil. Three kinds of shear strength tests were performed on the sample in different conditions of saturation: triaxial consolidated drained in saturated condition, triaxial consolidated undrained with constant water content and unconfined compression in unsaturated condition. To assess the development of the suction and its influence on the shear strength of a compacted soil, the unconfined compression tests were performed in a series of repeatability and the others with variation of the dry density and water content of the sample. In all unconfined compression tests, the HCT recorded increase of suction until 3% axial deformation, approximately, from where the suction tended to stabilized. The values of compressive strength and suction increased with higher dry densities and lower water contents. Firstly, the shear strength was correlated with suction and the dry density, for constant water content tests. In sequence, it was correlated with suction and the water content for constant dry density tests. The \'fi\'b angle, that relates the increase of the strength with suction, varied depending of determination method. Its values were higher when directly determined from the undrained strength than when determined from the model presented by Fredlund et al. (1978).

Contributions to the behavior\'s study of a quasi-saturated compacted residual soil.

The compaction of soils in climates with high concentration of rainfall has created problems that affect the physical and financial schedule of works. Embankments constructed with soils having high water content generate high degree of saturation, which, in turn, induces undesirable pore water pressures during construction. In general, the soil is compacted in the vicinity of the optimum water content (+/-3 %) and maximum dry density (DC 95% to 105 %). However, it is possible to evaluate the soil behaviour to enable compaction above the optimum moisture content. These embankments are called \"wet landfills\". The few studies carried out in these conditions found difficulties in the measuring of the suction during tests. The measurement of suction immediately after compaction using a high-capacity tensiometer (HCT) allowed studies on the development of the pore-water pressure during loading. Using constant water content triaxial test (CW) and the HCT, it is possible to obtain necessary information to construct a \"wet landfills\". This work experimentally investigate the behaviour of a residual soil of gneiss compacted at three conditions above the optimum moisture content. Tests are performed in the saturated (CIU tests) and unsaturated (CW trials) conditions with direct measurement of suction using a high-capacity tensiometer. The study evaluated the behaviour of a compacted soils in quasi-saturated state and investigating the following aspects: Effect of back-pressure technique for saturation on mechanical behaviour of the soil, development of suction after compaction and during shear tests, correlation between the soil water retention curve and the mechanical behaviour of the soil, evaluation of the use of the equations suggested by Bishop (1959) and Fredlund et al. (1978) for determining the failure surface. The work concludes that the use of the residual soil studied allows the construction of wet landfills without undesirable positive pore-water pressure. In addition, the research concludes that using the high-capacity tensiometer associated with CW triaxial tests is possible to obtain the failure envelope in unsaturated condition in a simple way.

The hypothesis of this study was that a Red Latosol (Oxisol), in summer and winter crops sequences under no-tillage system, can have its soil water storage influenced by changes in soil physical properties and digital tensiometer can be used to measure soil water matric potential. This study aimed to measure the soil matric potential using both mercury and digital tensiometers and to evaluate the soil water storage and physical properties on summer and winter crops sequences under no-tillage system. A completely randomized block was designed with three replications on a strips plan. The treatments were the combination of three summer crops sequences (soybean/maize rotation, corn and soybean monocultures) and seven winter crops (maize, sunflower, oilseed radish, millet, pigeon pea, sorghum and sunn hemp). Tensiometers were installed at a depth of 0.20; 0.40; 0.60 meters. Bulk density and pores distribution curves were determined from layers 0-0.1 and 0.1-0.2 depth and water infiltration at the soil surface. The data were submitted to variance analysis and means were compared by the Tukey test. The hypothesis was confirmed, therefore digital tensiometer can be used to measure soil water matric potential. The results showed no difference regarding soil water storage in summer crops sequences, especially after a period associated with lower water availability. Soil porosity and bulk density were not influenced by summer and winter crops sequences. The results indicated that the pores with diameter between 0,075 - 0,05 e 0,03 - 0,0375 mm from layer 0-0.1 m differed on summer crops sequences. No difference was observed by pores distribution curves between summer and winter crops sequences. The largest water infiltration occurred under the soybean monocultures plot

The performance of a time domain-reflectometer (TDR) was compared with a mercury tensiometer (considered to be the norm), emphasizing the detection of variations in soil water content under wetting and drying conditions (as in instantaneous profile method to determine soil hydraulic conductivity). An experiment was performed in a Nitossolo Vermelho distrófico latossólico argiloso (Brazilian classification system), close to the meteorological observatory of the ESALQ/USP, Piracicaba (SP), Brazil, latitude 22 o 42’30’’ S, longitude 47 o 38’00’’ W. Data of matric potential, dieletric constant and water content during a dry period and water application were analyzed. The TDR cable tester was better than the tensiometer to detect the soil moisture variation.
