Abstract: The metropolis of Sao Paulo plays the part of command in the Brazilian economy, setting up as a point of interconnection between Brazil and the world.

January 2008 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The analytical focuses of this master thesis are both the production and the modes of appro-priation of the Brasilia‟s metropolitan space. Space here means an interactive mediation amongst the forms of the built environment, which is the result of nature‟s transformations, and the social life that animates them. The dynamic of production of space articulates dialec-tically the dimensions of perceived, conceived and lived; and this is analysed through a le-febvrian-sojan perspective. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to analyse how Brasilia spatial organisation, which is characterised by both the discontinuities of the metropolitan tissue and its resulting huge distances, influences the use of the daily space-time and offer possibilities and/or limits to achieving the right to city of the inhabitants of the peripheral cities of Goias State. To achieve this aim, the reality of the metropolis, presented in one of its facets, is dis-cussed under two main aspects: the first concerns to the comprehension of the metropolitan space as a socio-historical product, resulting from the project of elaboration of a new Brazil-ian capital city and the spatial practice that outcomes in what is known today as Brasilia and its metropolitan space. This project was born from a conception of its creators and the spatial practice... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

Urban Pathways: Redesigning Toronto's Mobility

Liefl, Jessica Elizabeth January 2011 (has links)
As an increasing proportion of the world’s population travels ever-longer distances between their home and place of work, urban mobility networks have had to cope with this dramatic increase in movement. These networks not only occupy escalating amounts of undeveloped land, but also work to re-shape the public spaces and landscapes of the urban realm. The City of Toronto’s mobility (or increasing lack thereof) has an enormous influence on its culture and urban development; the car and its attendant infrastructures heavily govern the city’s growth by supporting urban sprawl. In order to redevelop public space, equalize access to mobility, and improve the way we move through the city, a new system of infrastructure is required; one that can negotiate through an asphalt-dominated landscape while creating a sustainable transport alternative. This thesis proposes new mobility networks as strategies of intensification through a repositioning of the bicycle and by prioritizing its supporting infrastructure along existing underutilized service lands in the City of Toronto. By further developing both the rail and hydro corridors as a city-wide network of mobility paths, and eventually phasing them into a series of linear parkways, distant parts of the city would become accessible for long-haul trips. The second design component is a series of bicycle hubs located at, and tailored to, strategic locations throughout the city’s existing corridors and transit lines. These new civic amenities have the potential to enrich urban placemaking, while acting as social centres that anchor newly connected communities.

Reimaging urban space: the festival as a (re)branding vehicle for inscribing Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside as Japantown

McCulloch, Scott 23 December 2014 (has links)
This research study uses a synthesis of theoretical frameworks from sociology and geography to develop critical branding theory that guides an analysis for how urban space is branded with a narrative and identity. The project investigates how a long running Japanese Canadian culture and arts festival called the Powell Street Festival that takes place in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside acts a branding vehicle and reimages urban space with commemorative aspects. The study consisted of twelve qualitative interviews, document and archival research, and a participant observation. Findings suggest that the Powell Street Festival performed as a vehicle for reimaging space, and through subtle-commemorative branding, Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside has been rebranded, in part, with Japanese Canadian facets. The Japantown brand coupled with the high potential for urban revitalization of this space, leads to a concern over the possible social and physical displacement of current Downtown Eastside residents, many of whom are low-income persons.

This research had the objective to achieve an analyze of the restructuring urban process, emphasizing the changes generated in the centrality urban.

Vieira, Rafael Augusto Kwiatkoski. January 2009 (has links)
Therefore, we tried to relate the ways of managing the city to the character forms of invention in relationship with the space. In the first chapter, we described how the project would be developed, emphasizing the cartography use as strategy that gives visibility to covered ways, and clarify the procedures adopted to achieve what was proposed in this research. Moreover, we explained our concerns list and the type of implication of the research field. The Ethical-Esthetic-Political paradigm was designated as a compass, the cartographer's way to orient itself faced with the world. In the second chapter, we raise in relief the lines which make up the Modern State, which is an effect of governmentalities operated according to the actual rationalities of the modern world. The State was seen, also, as social risk manager and variables administrator, taking the statistics as fundamental science to the population management, and the liberalism as a way of thinking that assures, through its governmentalities, the maintenance of the individual freedom and the continuation of the State. The medical-scientific speeches were analyzed as arms of the State in the creation of new individual lives, which produce themselves inside these speeches. We took the historical vein that consists of the end of feudalism and the advent of the bourgeoise as crucial for... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

Mak, Marcos Alexandre Ti Fai. January 2007 (has links)
Abstract: The Geographic space and the urban space might be considered product and condition of human relationships and therefore a whole set of objects and actions. In this way we may consider that the elements shouldn’t be studied detached, in a fragmentary way, under the risk of realize unreal analysis. Following the study methodology of form, structure, function and process this work will analyze a common aspect of the cities nowadays: abandoned or under usefully buildings. At first, they were called brownfields, term afterwards replaced by anachronistic broke, in other words, technical objects that remam absorbed to space modernization process. They are buildings and settlements that had their life cycle interrupted by a functionally or economically decline process, propelled by new ctynamics of space social production with regional or global scales that became them outmoded, degraded and dysfunctionally, needing new ordination because they presents themselves like a temporal fracture that waiting new functions or uses. This work - realized in Campinas, Brazil - has the objective of appraise two different recuperation process of anachronistic broke: one realized by State and another by private initiative, waiting understand which of this methods presents better results to society, using the concepts of memory preservation, use and consume of the space. / Mestre
