The Value of Visual Media in the Achievement of Instructors' Objectives as Perceived by Instructors in Predominantly Black State-Supported Colleges and Universities in the State of Louisiana

Pennywell, Phillip 12 1900 (has links)
The problem of this study was to determine the extent to which instructors perceived visual media as being valuable in achieving their classroom objectives in predominantly black, state-supported colleges and universities in the State of Louisiana. Questionnaires were mailed to 165 college and university instructors in colleges of education in predominantly black state-supported universities in Louisiana. Of the 165 questionnaires mailed, 139 were returned. All participants used in the study were teaching at least one course in education during the time the questionnaire was administered. The study is descriptive. The data were collected by means of a questionnaire, and analyzed by percentages, means, and standard deviations. One-way analysis of variance was used to test the differences in attitudes among the faculty members in the study. The level of significance was set at .05.

An investigation into the alignment of illustration in higher education practices and the visual communications industry

Dumville, Stuart Lloyd January 2012 (has links)
Thesis (MTech (Graphic Design))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2012. / University graduates entering the graphic design, advertising and publishing industries do so with the hand and digital illustration knowledge and skills that they acquired during their time of study. As a result of the ever-changing developments in technology, the parameters of hand-generated illustration within the visual communications industry have increasingly progressed toward digitally generated artwork. This thesis investigates the alignment or nonalignment between illustration teaching and learning practices in higher education and professional practice in the visual communications industry, with a view to identifying the gaps, and their causes, in the knowledge and skills of graduates entering the workplace. The study uses the lens of Activity Theory (Enqestrorn, 1987) to investigate practices in higher education and industry sites. Both the higher education and workplace investigation was guided by the research questions: 1) What comprises an activity system in the training of illustrators in higher education? 2) What comprises an activity system in professional illustrators' practice? and 3) How can the higher education and professional activity systems be aligned for their mutual benefit? The comparative study uses both quantitative questionnaire data and qualitative data derived from interviews conducted in both higher education and workplace sites, including the analysis of samples of illustration at both sites. The research reveals areas where there is both alignment and non-alignment and recommendations are made with a view to ensuring that illustration programmes in higher education are aligned as closely as possible to the needs of the workplace. The contribution made by this research is both theoretical and practical. The theoretical knowledge framework that has been developed outlines academics' and practitioners' of illustration theorising of current trends in both hand and digital illustration curricula in higher education and current trends and needs of digital and hand illustration in the visual communication industry. In broad terms, there is alignment with regard to technical skills and the tools used across both sites, while there is non-alignment with regard to knowledge of and preparation for the workplace and self employment, for example, time management, interpersonal skills and the acceptance of critique. The practical contribution is in the form of recommendations to curricula, which when applied should better prepare graduates with the practical and skills required of illustrators in the unpredictable, demanding world of work, which they encounter on leaving their academic institutions.

The research appears as an autobiographical reflection on the creative processes experienced between the teacher and children in a public institution of early childhood education. Presented in the format of a heroic journey, the dissertation consists of an interweaving of subjectivities of the teacher-researcher and the peculiarities of the experiences with children. Through the observation of practices of creation and production of animated films with three different groups of children, the teacher takes a thoughtful look at the construction of the teacher identity of who is presented here as subject and object of the research. Reflecting about the three experiences, we sought to find evidence for the factors that justify certain creative connections / Mestrado / Educação, Conhecimento, Linguagem e Arte / Mestra em Educação

Abstract: I present to the reader a set of interpretative essays that take the form of a dialogue with the images and poetic elaborations of the Armenian artist Serguei Paradjanov. For purposes of this paper, we focus in his movie "The Color of Pomegranates" (1968-1969) and in his plastic production from 1967 to two years before his death, in 1990. The set of texts elaborates the esthetics idea of pastiche and aims to rebuild it as the methodological procedure suggested by the artist own poetic art. I sought to study the scenic elements presented and their interaction in kaleidoscope, the peculiarity of its framework and the scene planning, I went through his look until I could see the invisible of the art in his memories and the memories of the technical resources used. In this way I tried, with imagination and knowledge, to present a believable and credible interpretation, not chronological and whose writing sought synchronicity with the work and his way to present it. / Doutorado / Educação, Conhecimento, Linguagem e Arte / Doutor em Educação

Media training at the Soweto College of Education

Van der Vyver, John 11 June 2014 (has links)
M.Ed. (Media Science) / In 1981 the Human Sciences Research Council published the findings of its comprehensive investigation into all aspects of education in the Republic of South Africa. The work committee on educational technology made, inter alia, two recommendations that are pertinent to this study, namely: "Educational technology should be accepted as a fundamental factor in the planning, development and implementation of the educational system at all levels (1981:36). " and "In order to expedite the extension of educational technology in solving problems confronting education, the concepts of educational technology should form part of the pre- and continuing training of all categories of personnel involved with teaching, training and extension services (1981: 37) " Aspects of these two recommendations were also taken up in the White Paper on the Provision of Education in RSA. "The Government accepts the importance of educational technology as one of the modern and potentially extremely valuable aids in education.

Die opleiding van onderwysers in die gebruik van opvoedkundige televisieprogramme

Bezuidenhout, Wynand C. J. 14 April 2014 (has links)
M.A. (Media Studies) / One of the problems facing formal education in South Africa today is that. of coping with the educational needs of a fast developing country. An important recommendation of the De Lange Report was that educational technology should be utilised to alleviate this problem. Educational television, especially the use of video, is regarded as one of the most important technological media which can assist in this matter. A study was undertaken in the use of educational television in developing and developed countries in resolving educational problems. The role of teacher training in the successful implementation of educational television was also scrutinised. It was found that teacher training played a decisive role in the successful use of this medium. Teachers inadequately trained in the use of the medium lacked the knowledge to use it properly in the classroom. They also showed a resistance to the medium. At· present educational television in South Africa is aimed at non-formal educational needs but from 1 April 1986 the SABC will commence the broadcasting of formal educational programmes. In this study it is thus recommended that training courses in the use of educational television should be instituted at all "teacher training centres in South Africa and that all educational departments should give attention to the formal and non-formal training of in-service teachers .. Guidelines for a training course are suggested in this study. The contents of such a course would include components like television literacy, television and cognition, the analysis and evaluation of programmes, integration with the various subjects, the use and compilation of· support material and small scale television production. It is also recommended that the course should comprise lectures in theory and practical work sessions. -These practical work sessions would be regarded as the most important part of the course.

Heard but not seen: Instructor-led video and its effect on learning.

Holder, David E. 08 1900 (has links)
Educators and instructional designers are seeking ways to increase levels of learning. One of the ways this is being done is through cognitive load theory which attempts to reduce cognitive load through a better understanding of working memory and the factors that impact its function. Past studies have found that working memory processes visual and auditory information using separate and non-sharable resources (dual coding theory) and that by properly utilizing multimedia elements, information processing in working memory is more efficient (multimedia learning). What is not known is the effect that instructor-led video, which uses the visual channel but delivers no information, has on the cognitive load of the learner. Further, will the introduction of multimedia elements make the information processing of the learner more efficient? This study examined three ways in which instructional designers may create a more efficient learning environment through a better understanding of multimedia learning. First, by using the theories of multimedia learning, I examined a more efficient use of sensory memory. By minimizing extraneous load, which communication theory calls noise, on working memory through increased utilization of the visual and auditory channels, the effectiveness of instruction was increased. Secondly, the multimedia effect, defined as using visual helps and guides with spoken and written text, was shown to assist working memory in processing new information into existing schema. Last, by using the personalization principle set forth by Clark and Mayer (2008), I used both the video feed and multimedia together to foster a more social or conversational presentation to the learner.

Orientador: Nuno Cesar Pereira de Abreu / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Artes / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-26T23:27:12Z (GMT). This work is the result of reflections and analysis arising from the teaching experience of the researcher in teaching video production to first-year high-school students for a period of four years at a private school network in the city of Campinas - SP. The objective was to evaluate aspects of the students' perception about their own learning from the description of the procedures performed in the classroom and their results. The course "Film and video production", studied as a regular discipline within the Arts curriculum in 2009, was set up in order to encourage in students the development of skills and competencies related to the demands of society in which the audiovisual has come to occupy a prominent space in interpersonal relations as a communication tool. The choice for the phenomenological method based on the student experience therefore aims to deal, with some precision, with an inaccurate and dynamic reality which requires increasingly varied and continuously evolving learning processes. The discussion about the importance of deconstructing pedagogical strategies that are old and, to an extent, out of date, seeks to investigate the extent to which social context can influence new teaching practices and encourage the improvement of learning processes of audiovisual language. The stages of this work include the literature discussion of works published on topics such video production; the grounds of the phenomenological method; the report of educational activities; and the transcription and analysis of student interviews. This research discusses the experience with video production from the point of view of those involved in the teaching-learning process and it could broaden the horizons of researchers seeking to work with audiovisual teaching in schools / Doutorado / Multimeios / Doutora em Multimeios

Educational use of video tape and cable to communicate information

Maury, Donna Lynne, Burke, Mary Ann 01 January 1998 (has links)
As educators, communicating timely, important information to parents and to the community is a challenge. By using video technology, the ability to convey such information is not only possible but rather simple. Taking it one step further, utilizing cable television allows for the transmission of a variety of information to every living room in our community.
