[en] PREDICTION OF THE SHORT CRACKS EFFECT ON STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS / [pt] PREVISÃO DO EFEITO DAS TRINCAS CURTAS EM COMPONENTES ESTRUTURAISMARCO VINICIO GUAMAN ALARCON 14 April 2014 (has links)
Kitagawa-Takahashi. Partindo do modelo ETS, neste trabalho se apresenta
do modelo proposto. / [en] The fatigue strength of structural elements may be limited by the
presence of short cracks, which can not be detected with traditional
nondestructive inspections. The behavior of these cracks can be modeled
using the characteristic size of short cracks a0, proposed by El Haddad,
Topper and Smith (ETS), which allows one to properly adjust experimental
data from the Kitagawa-Takahashi diagram. Based on the ETS model, this
work presents the Stress Gradient (SG) model, developed to predict the
effect of short cracks that grow from the notch tips. This model considers
that cracks are easily generated due to fatigue in sharp notches, which
introduce high stress concentration effects at their tips. Because of the high
stress gradient acting at these notch tips, the short cracks can also stop to
grow by fatigue after having propagated through a small distance, thereby
becoming non-propagating cracks that can be tolerated in service. C(T)
modified specimens were specifically designed to study the generation and
initial growth of these cracks in fatigue tests, and used to experimentally
verify the predictions of the proposed model.

[en] CRACK GROWTH WITH PARTIAL BENDING-INDUCED CRACK CLOSURE / [pt] PROPAGAÇÃO DE FRENTES DE TRINCAS PARCIALMENTE FECHADAS POR FLEXÃO CÍCLICASILVIA CORBANI 07 January 2015 (has links)
[en] This work investigates experimentally and numerically how the front of
initially through edge cracks in plate changes after they pass to be remotely
fatigue loaded under pure bending to induce partial closure of the crack faces.
This type of crack growth problem can occur in a variety of structures with preexisting
defects, such as aircraft fuselages, ship hulls, pressure vessels
components, and steel bridges. The bending loads induce tension and compression
regions along the crack front, with the part of the crack faces that work under
compression undoubtedly closed by the load, independently of any other closure
mechanism. The part of the crack faces that work under tension; on the other
hand, crack grows by fatigue gradually changing its shape. After performing tests
on ASTM A36 steel specimens, it was observed that the bending load induces a
kink on the crack front, in the transition between the part through crack created on
the tension side and initial crack geometry. To understand the distribution of the
stress intensity factor along such crack fronts, the measured crack shapes were
reproduced in a three-dimensional fracture mechanics modeler (FRANC3D)
coupled to a finite element analysis program (ABAQUS). With this coupled
system, linear elastic stress analysis simulations were performed considering the
nonlinear effects caused by the crack face contact in the compressed region. In
particular, methods had to be proposed to treat numerical noise around the kink.
The proposed methodology efficiently predicts the observed crack front shape
changes; although the observed fatigue lives were better reproduced using a crackclosure
correction factor when compared to crack growth data obtained from
standard compact tension specimens. In addition, a series of normalized empiric
expressions for both crack front shapes and stress intensity factors are proposed.

[en] A METHODOLOGY OF THE ANALYSIS AND MODELING OF RESIDUAL STRESSES. / [pt] UMA METODOLOGIA PARA A ANÁLISE E MODELAGEM DE TENSÕES RESIDUAISJOSE LUIZ FERNANDES 16 June 2003 (has links)
[pt] Realizou-se uma completa avaliação das propriedades
mecânicas e metalúrgicas do metal de base e do metal de
solda para o material da classe API 5L X60. A
[en] This study involved a complete evaluation of the mechanical
and metallurgical properties of the base and the metal of
welding for the material of the class API 5L X60. The
characterization of the mechanical monotonic properties of
fatigue of this steel included the evaluation of mechanical
monotonic, cyclic, toughness, fatigue crack propagation
potential drop and back strain deformation and
microstructural evaluation. After quantifying the
mechanical properties of API 5L X60 steel, residual
tensions were then measured. Firstly, for the assessment of
the profile of residual tensions throughout a welded joint
a portable x-ray equipment was used. However, as this
method presented considerable result dispersion, I opted
for yet another technique for measuring residual tension,
namely the Hole Drilling Method. As this technique also
presented shortcomings (sigmaRES less or equal SE / 3), I
suggest a
numerical model that allows for the measuring of residual
tensions for nominal loads which varies till the resistance
of yielding. In addition, since the problems with the hole
drilling technique are of great relevance, I also suggest
the use of a rosette with 5 strain-gages so as not to
restrict the measurement of residual tensions to a
deterministic experiment.

[en] ASSESSMENT OF THE SUPER LONG FATIGUE LIFE OF AISI 316L STAINLESS STEEL PROCESSED BY L-DED ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING / [pt] AVALIAÇÃO DA SUPER LONGA VIDA EM FADIGA DO AÇO INOXIDÁVEL AISI 316L PROCESSADO POR MANUFATURA ADITIVA L-DEDMATHEUS FERNANDES DE ANDRADE 07 November 2022 (has links)
[en] Additive manufacturing (AM) technologies have become a target of great industrial interest for manufacture of components and final parts intended for several applications in many sectors of the industry. Most of these components are designed to have a service life higher than 107cycles, making the analysis of the fatigue behavior in the very high cycle regime (VHCF) an essential design criterion. AISI 316L stainless steel is one of the most processed by AM, with numerous approaches in the literature. However, there is still no consolidated knowledge about the behavior of this material when subjected to long or super long fatigue lives after processing by the different available techniques, nor about the predominant crack initiation mechanisms. In general, in the VHCF regime, cracks tend to start internally or in subsurface regions from internal defects present in the material. This fact results in a characteristic in the fracture surface known as fish-eye. Another phenomenon that occurs at the fracture surface, more specifically within the fish-eye region, is the formation of a fine granular area (FGA) nearby the crack initiation sites. The present work analyzed the long-term fatigue strength of AISI 316L steel manufactured by laser directed energy deposition (L-DED) technique. Specimens of two post-processing conditions of the material, with and without heat treatment, were subjected to fatigue tests in ultrasonic equipment (frequency 20 ± 0.5 kHz), with R = -1 aiming 109cycles. After surveying the S-N curves of the two microstructural conditions, the fracture surfaces were analyzed. The research results indicated that the heat treatment reduced the fatigue life of the material as a function of the population of metallurgical defects found, as well as influenced the formation of fish-eye and FGA during the initiation and propagation of cracks. Finally, the size of FGA was experimentally quantified to allow comparison with the dimensions of the FGA estimated by empirical equations present in the literature.

[en] ANALYSIS OF THE BEHAVIOR OF DIN 42CRMO4 AND DIN 34CRNIMO6 STEELS IN VERY HIGH CYCLE FATIGUE / [pt] ANÁLISE DO COMPORTAMENTO DOS AÇOS DIN 42CRMO4 E DIN 34CRNIMO6 EM REGIME DE FADIGA DE ALTÍSSIMO CICLOJULIANA DE PAIVA CORREA 29 September 2021 (has links)
[en] The DIN 42CrMo4 e DIN 34CrNiMo6 steel behavior analysis in fatigue regime in very high cycle. The uncountable engineering systems are submitted loading cyclic during long time in services. So, the determination of material performance in regime in super long life in fatigue (107–1012cycles) belong the high relevance to estimate the live cycle of mechanical of components and structures. Based on it, the use of testing equipment to operate in ultrasonic frequency, normally in 20 kHz. That permits the studies about material fatigue resistance in very high cycle. In this moment, the main contribution of these studies was to demonstrate that no exist fatigue limit to material after 107 cycles, that it allows to question many projects methodologic that was developed long of years based on infinite material life under of loading cyclicals conditions. This present work had the objective to investigate the fatigue resistance in very high cycle of two structure steels (DIN 42CrMo4 and DIN 34CrNiMo6). These steels are used to manufacturing of crankshaft of thermoelectric central that failure due to fatigue in services in premature way. The selected specimens had the three types of format; Hourglass, notched Hourglass and notched Cylindrical with two different rounding of radius. These tests were performed in ultrasonic equipment, with variation of stress between 0,3 – 0,5 of material mechanical resistance and they are performed until maximum number of cycles per failure of 109 cycles. Considering the test of hourglass specimens, the results presented higher fatigue resistance of DIN 34CrNiMo6 steel, although DIN 42CrMo4 as same mechanical properties of DIN 34CrNiMo6 steel. And as it is waited the existence of stress concentrators accelerated the fatigue life in both materials. However, the DIN 42CrMo4 presented higher sensibility to notch, with small decrease of number of cycles to failure.

[pt] AVALIAÇÃO DE FALHA POR FADIGA EM TESTE ULTRASSÔNICO COM BASE NA EVOLUÇÃO DA TEMPERATURA E MECANISMOS DE INICIAÇÃO DE TRINCAS / [en] FATIGUE FAILURE ASSESSMENT IN ULTRASONIC TEST BASED ON TEMPERATURE EVOLUTION AND CRACK INITIATION MECHANISMSMARIA CLARA CARVALHO TEIXEIRA 09 November 2023 (has links)
[en] The determination of fatigue life to design structures and mechanical components
is extremely important. The S-N curve can be affected by different operational
conditions, and some factors are more pronounced under ultrasonic fatigue test,
depending on the material. The influence of the high frequency in self-heating
phenomena and frequency effect are discussed. A relevant aspect in VHCF is the
mechanism of crack initiation and propagation. The fish-eye and fine granular area
(FGA) phenomena were encountered on the fracture surfaces. This thesis is divided in
3 topics: temperature evolution, microplasticity strain amplitude, and investigation of
the FGA region. The materials under study are DIN 34CrNiMo6 and DIN 42CrMo4
steel. Ultrasonic fatigue test was conducted at different intermittent driving and loading
ratios, accompanied by an infrared thermographic camera. These results obtained by
the thermographic camera were used to developed an artificial intelligence model using
machine learning to predict the temperature-number of cycle curves based on the
fatigue life. The model was able to predict the temperature and the coefficient of
determination values to be above 0.98. In order to predict the fatigue life, parameters
were selected based on stress, the traditional S-N curve, slope temperature at the
beginning of the test, (Rayleigh ratio), heat dissipation, Qcyc, and gradient temperature. A steady state
temperature was reached approximately in 5E+04 cycles with both steels. It is
noticeable that the number of cycles to failure increases as slope temperature and heat
dissipation decreases. (Rayleigh ratio) provided better agreement with the experimental results
followed by Qcyc. Moreover, ultrafine grains in the cross–section of the FGA between
500 - 700 nm within the fracture surface were detected by FIB and EBSD analysis.
Local grain refinement was choose the best model to explain FGA formation. The
non-metallic inclusions were ultimately responsible for all internal crack initiations of
Al2O3.

[en] AN ARCHITECTURE FOR E-HEALTH SYSTEMS THAT SUPPORTS PATIENT MONITORING AND CAREGIVERS NOTIFICATION BASED ON A REASONING MODEL TO AVOID ALARM FATIGUE / [pt] UMA ARQUITETURA PARA SISTEMAS DE SAÚDE ELETRÔNICOS QUE SUPORTA O MONITORAMENTO DE PACIENTES E A NOTIFICAÇÃO DE CUIDADORES COM BASE EM RACIOCÍNIO AUTOMÁTICO PARA EVITAR A FADIGA DE ALARMECHRYSTINNE OLIVEIRA FERNANDES 11 May 2020 (has links)
[en] Estimates show that 80 per cent to 99 per cent of alarms set off in hospital units are false or clinically insignificant, representing a cacophony of sounds that do not present a real danger to patients. These false alarms can lead to an alert overload that causes a health care provider to miss important events that could be harmful or even life-threatening. As health care units become more dependent on monitoring devices for patient care purposes, the alarm fatigue issue has to be addressed as a major concern in order to prevent healthcare providers from undergoing alarm burden, as well as to increase patient safety. The main goal of this thesis is to propose a solution for the alarm fatigue problem by using an automatic reasoning mechanism to decide how to notify members of the health care team. Our specific goals are: to reduce the number of notifications sent to caregivers; to detect false alarms based on alarm-context information; to decide the best caregiver to whom a notification should be assigned. This thesis describes: a model to support reasoning algorithms that decide how to notify caregivers in order to avoid alarm fatigue; an architecture for health systems that supports patient monitoring, reasoning and notification capabilities; and three reasoning algorithms that decide: (i) how to notify caregivers by deciding whether to aggregate a group of alarms; (ii) whether, or not, to notify caregivers with an indication of a false alarm probability; (iii) who is the best caregiver to notify considering a group of caregivers. Experiments were used to demonstrate that by providing a reasoning system that aggregates alarms we can reduce the total of notifications received by the caregivers by up to 99.3 per cent of the total alarms generated. These experiments were evaluated through the use of a dataset comprising real patient monitoring data and vital signs recorded during 32 surgical cases where patients underwent anesthesia at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. We present the results of this algorithm by using graphs generated with the R language, which show whether the algorithm decided to deliver an alarm immediately or after a given delay. We also achieved the expected results for our reasoning algorithm that handles the notifications assignment task, since the algorithm prioritized the caregiver that was available and was the most experienced and capable of attending to the notification. The experimental results strongly suggest that our reasoning algorithms are a useful strategy to avoid alarm fatigue. Although we evaluated our algorithms in an experimental environment, we tried to reproduce the context of a clinical environment by using real-world patient data. As future work, we aim to evaluate our algorithms using more realistic clinical conditions by increasing, for example, the number of patients, monitoring parameters, and types of alarm.

[pt] AVALIAÇÃO DA PREVISÃO DE VIDA DE PEÇAS ENTALHADAS SOB CARGAS DE AMPLITUDE VARIÁVEL / [en] EVALUATION OF FATIGUE LIFE PREDICTION OF SPECIMEN WITH STRESS FACTOR CONCENTRATION UNDER VARIABLE AMPLITUDE LOADINGKALLIN DE SOUZA 30 April 2020 (has links)
Diferente do método
Contudo a
conservativas. / [en] The strain-life designed is based on the damaged caused by the strain as a
result of a loading history. The purpose of this approach is estimating the number
of cycles to initiate a fatigue crack. Compared with the stress life method the EN
needs a lower number of variables. However, it needs a large number of parameters
that are not directly measurable properties of a material and conduct the necessary
number of tests to obtain them is not always an option. This fact leads to the
formulation of different models to estimate Coffin- Manson s constants, which in
most of the cases can result in a non-conservative fatigue life prediction, as seen in
several papers. However, in these studies, it is not considered a specimen with a
stress concentration factor neither under a variable amplitude loading history. The
methodology used in this research is evaluating the influence of these aspects by
comparing the fatigue life experimental with the estimated by using the Coffin Manson s experimental constants and the fatigue life calculated with different
models to estimate the Coffin-Manson s parameters. This study evaluated the
fatigue damage based on four load histories and two types of samples with different
stress risers. Considering the models of Manson, Muralidharan-Manson, Bäumel-Seeger, and Meggiolaro-Castro the results indicated that the fatigue life predicted
using the Coffin Manson s parameter obtained by Meggiolaro-Castro and Baumel-Segger s model are more similar to the life calculated with the experimental
constants. The other models are more influenced by the stress concentration s rule
and can lead to not conservative fatigue life.

A primeira
forma bem sucedida os resultados experimentais analisados nesse trabalho. A
longo do tempo.
[en] This doctoral thesis originates from the research project Aneel PD-0394-
1905/2019, carried out through a collaboration between Furnas and PUC-Rio. The
main objective of this extensive research project is the development of fiber
reinforced concrete for distinct structural application which are subjected to
continuous flexural fatigue loading along their useful life, such wind tower
endeavors, concrete pavements and bridge elements. The addition of fibers in the
concrete mix has the potential to mitigate the mechanical deterioration along the
continuous load cycles, enhancing, as a consequence, the durability and the fatigue
life of the cited concrete structural elements. Throughout this doctoral thesis, the
mechanical degradation of fiber reinforced concrete under fatigue is carefully
analyzed, starting from the fiber scale with pull-out tests and going up to the
structural scale through large-scale fatigue mechanical tests. The first stage of this
study involves an analysis of the mechanical behavior of fiber reinforced concrete
under fatigue loading. The material fatigue life is examined using different
statistical models, which allow evaluating material failure based on a failure
probability. Fatigue pull-out tests help explain, at the fiber-matrix interface scale,
how the prisms rupture under cyclic loading. A second phase of this work
demonstrates the mechanical degradation of reinforced structural beams under
fatigue and the impact of fiber addition on key concerned parameters. The addition
of fiber reinforcement causes a redistribution of stresses in the tension zone of the
structural element, reducing the deformations of the longitudinal rebar and
mitigating the mechanical degradation of reinforced concrete in terms of curvature,
displacement and stiffness. Furthermore, fiber addition significantly improves the
bond between the steel bar and the surrounding concrete matrix, a key factor in
explaining the enhanced mechanical response of the structure under fatigue, as
studied in this doctoral thesis through rebar pull-out tests. Finally, a new analytical
solution was developed to assess the mechanical degradation of fiber reinforced
concrete prisms under fatigue loads. The proposed analytical curves successfully fit
the experimental results analyzed in this work. The addition of fibers showed great
potential in reducing the mechanical degradation of reinforced concrete structures
subjected to cyclic loading. The stress redistribution in the tension zone, caused by
the fibers, promotes greater stiffness of the structure under fatigue, improves the
bond with the reinforcement and enhances the ability to withstand fatigue cycles
over time. Therefore, the observed enhancement of mechanical properties through
fiber reinforcement can ensure a longer service life for reinforced concrete
structures.

[en] NUMERICAL STUDY ON THE PREDICTION OF FRETTING FATIGUE CRACK NUCLEATION VIA MULTIAXIAL FATIGUE MODELS / [pt] ESTUDO NUMÉRICO PARA A PREVISÃO DE NUCLEAÇÃO DE TRINCAS SOB SOLICITAÇÕES DE FRETTING E DE FADIGA SEGUNDO A ABORDAGEM MULTIAXIALFERNANDO SALLES DA SILVA PIRES 13 August 2018 (has links)
[en] This work presents and discusses four multiaxial fatigue damage models (SWTD, SWT, Findley and Crossland) applied to crack nucleation prediction under fretting fatigue loadings according to the local and the non-local approaches. The predictions have been compared with experimental data available in the literature for the cylinder on flat configuration made of 52100 and 1034 AISI steel s respectively. In particular, for the data set analyzed, SWTD parameter (deviatoric version of SWT model) predictions were less conservative than the ones made by the other three models and have better correlated the experimental results. Considering the local approach, the error observed on the SWTD predictions was lower than 15 percent. On the other hand, for the non-local approach, it has been demonstrated that the four multiaxial fatigue models can provide crack nucleation predictions with similar level of accuracy (error lower than 15 percent) if the characteristic dimension is calibrated model-by-model. Note that this same level of accuracy was obtained with SWTD parameter defined in terms of the local approach, which requires one less parameter to be calibrated (characteristic dimension). In particular, considering only the fretting fatigue tests with bulk stresses, SWTD non-local (area method) prediction accuracy was 100 percent (13 tests). For the material studied, it has also been concluded that the non-local predictions accuracy depends more on the calibrated characteristic dimension than on the multiaxial model or integration method considered. Moreover, it has been verified that non-conservative predictions can be made if the characteristic dimension is assumed as a material property as proposed by Taylor on the critical distances theory (point method).
