[en] FPGA APPLICATIONS ON SINGLE PHOTON DETECTION SYSTEMS / [pt] APLICAÇÕES DE FPGA EM SISTEMAS DE DETECÇÃO DE FÓTONS ÚNICOS

GUSTAVO CASTRO DO AMARAL 12 March 2015 (has links)
[en] Despite the high sensitivity reached by Photon Detectors so far, the implementation of a background managing system often enforces the robustness of measurements thus creating a resourceful apparatus for specific applications. In this document, the management tools offered by Software Defined Hardware (SDHs) is put to test. By associating the power of FPGAs and Photon Detectors, enhanced measurement stations were assembled. Two different applications, a Bell State Projection Analysis Station and a Photon Counting Optical Time Domain Reflectometry (v-OTDR)Automatic Setup, are presented. Even though both experiments involve the detection of single photons, the background technologies differ drastically.

[en] GENERATION OF BUILT-IN OPTICAL INTELIGENCE ON ETHERNET / IP NETWORKS / [pt] GERAÇÃO DE INTELIGÊNCIA ÓPTICA EM REDES ETHERNET / IP

HENRIQUE JOSE PINTO PORTELA DA SILVA 06 July 2005 (has links)
[en] The main objective of this work is the generation of new functionalities in optical networks, associated to the Ethernet and IP protocols, by the use of programmable integrated circuits operating in Gigabit rates. The Ethernet standard is presented through its PHY and MAC layers, highlighting its functions, interfaces and the types of commercially available ICs. The Ethernet standard PHY layer for optical media is described. Some IC technologies are discussed, such as dedicated growth, ASICs, NPUs and the programmable technologies: FPGAs e CPLDs. The concept of built-in optical intelligence and a new layers model associated to it are presented. A new network element, dedicated to the insertion of signaling in the optical layer is also presented, and special attention is dedicated to its structure, to its implementation and to the aspects of its use in networks. Several experimental setups using the developed element are shown, demonstrating the characteristics of the system, particularly the efficiency obtained by the use of FPGA technology and the transparency of the optical intelligence with respect to the Ethernet standard.

[en] HIGH-RESOLUTION OTDR WITH EMBEDDED PRECISE FAULT ANALYSIS / [pt] OTDR DE ALTARESOLUÇÃO COM ANÁLISE PRECISA DE FALHAS INTEGRADA

FELIPE CALLIARI 16 November 2021 (has links)
[en] Optical fibers are susceptible to mechanical stress and may be damaged or broken, thus physical layer supervision is essential to identify these failures and remediate them as quickly as possible. In order to hasten and simplify the scheduling process of the in-field repairing units, an automated fiber measurement system based on a digital signal processing (DSP) unit capable of autonomously identifying fault positions was developed. By combining this DSP unit with a Tunable Photon-Counting OTDR, it is possible to create such a device. This work presents the development of the building blocks for such device.
