[pt] A transição do séc. XIX para o XX, marcada pela Revolução científicotecnológica no mundo ocidental, acabou por infligir aos países periféricos um violento e atribulado processo de modernização, inspirado na noção positivista do progresso que teve como um dos efeitos mais importantes a construção dos Estados-Nação. Em prol dessa mudança, surgia no Brasil um importante utilitarismo intelectual que só atribuía valor às formas de criação que se apresentassem como fatores de mudança social. Hoje, na transição dos séc. XX-XXI, a utopia da construção do Estado-Nação não alimenta mais as artes. E a literatura, orientada agora por outros valores, parece ter perdido seu poder de criar projetos, sozinha, tornando-se a expressão de um mundo desiludido. Mas, num processo de deslocamento e descentramento, por meio de um discurso híbrido, entre música e escrita, surge o espaço privilegiado da voz dos excluídos, com atitude crítica e propositiva, revelando um novo lugar discursivo de reflexão e de veiculação da verdade. / [en] The transition from the XIX to the XX century was marked by the scientific - technological revolution in the Western world. This was responsible for a violent and troubled process of modernization in the peripheral countries, inspired by the positivist idea of progress, which had in the construction of the Nation - States one of its most important achievements. Favouring that change, a notable intellectual utilitarianism appeared in Brazil; it only accepted those forms of creativity bearing elements able to produce social changes. Nowadays, in the transition from the XX to the XXI century, the utopia of making Nation - States does no longer feed art. And literature, now turned toward other values, seems to have lost its power to create projects by itself, having become the expression of a non-illusioned world. However, in a process of displacement and shifting out of centre, by means of a hybrid discourse, half-way between music and writing, there appears the privileged space for the clamour of the excluded, with a critical and propositional attitude, disclosing a new discoursive place for reflection and for the conveyance of truth.

[pt] A dissertação delineia as trajetórias de produção e crítica da literatura de ficção científica no Brasil, de meados do século XIX até hoje. O objetivo é investigar o processo de marginalização do gênero na perspectiva da constituição dos cânones da literatura brasileira, divididos, de uma maneira genérica, em duas vertentes: a erudita, que legitima a intelectualidade nacional relacionando-a à alta cultura européia; e a popular, mediada pela mesma elite intelectual, na qual os mitos da brasilidade são afirmados ideologicamente. A análise dos discursos críticos sobre a ficção científica revela esta dualidade, além de alguns dos valores, pressupostos e práticas discursivas que regulam o processo de estabelecimento do cânone no Brasil. A problematização destes parâmetros é uma das chaves para compreender a não-assimilação do gênero pelo cânone oficial que constrói politicamente a idéia de Literatura Brasileira. / [en] This thesis traces the paths of the production and criticism of science-fiction literature in Brazil from the middle of the nineteenth century to the present. The goal is to investigate the process of marginalization of the genre from the standpoint of the construction of Brazilian literary canons, roughly divided in two branches: the high canon, which legitimates the Brazilian intelligentsia by relating it to European high culture; and the popular canon, mediated by the same intellectual elite, which ideologically affirms Brazilian myths of nationality. The analysis of critical discourses about science fiction shows this duality, in addition to some of the values, assumptions and practices that regulate the processes of literary canonization in Brazil. The questioning of these parameters is a key way to understand the non-assimilation of the genre by the official canon, which politically constructs the idea of a Brazilian literature.
