[pt] A história da leitura se relaciona diretamente à história do suporte. Com o surgimento de publicações eletrônicas dispostas nos mais diversos suportes – como tablets, smartphones, computadores –, estes novos formatos passaram a conviver com os impressos. Assim, o objetivo desta pesquisa foi reavaliar os contextos de leitura, a partir da relação entre leitor e suporte, tendo em foco publicações híbridas, criadas tanto no meio impresso quanto no digital. Para isto, investigou-se a atividade de leitores específica do subúrbio carioca, a partir de uma manifestação cultural particular da cidade: os Bate-bolas (ou Clóvis). Para abordar este campo de leituras contemporâneas e vários formatos de publicações, explorou-se as singularidades da experiência de leitura do leitor do subúrbio carioca e sua aproximação com o acesso às publicações híbridas. As etapas de pesquisa de campo incluíram questionários presenciais e entrevistas realizadas com estes jovens leitores e, a partir da observação de seus hábitos de leitura, foi elaborada uma pesquisa-intervenção. A proposta da criação de uma publicação híbrida surge a partir das necessidades dos leitores Bate-bolas, urgências estas apontadas pelos próprios durante a pesquisa. O resultado da análise da interação dos Bate-bolas com a publicação híbrida proposta tem como resultado final comprovação da hipótese e elaboração da conclusão da pesquisa. / [en] The history of reading is directly related to that of medium support. The birth of electronic publishing on the most diverse gadgets — tablets, smartphones, personal computers, — provided the coexistence of these new formats with printed ones. This research s goal was to reassess the reading context from the relation between reader and medium support, focusing on hybrid publications, created both in printed and digital formats. To accomplish that, reading activity from Rio de Janeiro s suburb was investigated from the aspect of a cultural manifestation particular to the city: the Bate-bolas (or Clóvis). To approach this area of contemporary reading and several publishing formats, the peculiar experience from Rio suburb s reader was studied as well as their ease of access to hybrid publications. Field research s steps included face-to-face questionnaires and interviews with these young readers and, from the observation of their reading habits, an intervention research was elaborated. Proposing the creation of a hybrid publication comes from the necessities of Bate-bolas readers, whose urgencies were pointed by themselves during the research. The outcome from analyzing this interaction between Bate-bolas and the proposed hybrid publication further proves the hypothesis, and results in the conclusion of the research.

[pt] A cidade que não é – Leituras do subúrbio carioca analisa o conceito carioca de subúrbio para tentar compreender de que forma o processo de ressignificação desse espaço impactou o imaginário existente sobre ele. Produto do crescimento das cidades e um dos elementos definidores da modernização das mesmas, o subúrbio é um território singular na constituição das metrópoles. Compreender as definições que ele ganhou nos discursos culturais é essencial para entender a cidade moderna. Na tentativa de contribuir para a análise teórica sobre o tema, este projeto parte da fundamentação geográfica, sociológica e histórica sobre as questões urbanas e da leitura de representações culturais desse espaço para conceituar e historicizar o subúrbio e analisar as superposições entre urbanismo, arquitetura, imaginário e experiência urbana nas narrativas do início do século XX aos primeiros anos do século XXI no Rio de Janeiro. / [en] The city that is not – Reading the suburb of Rio de Janeiro analyses the specificities of the concept suburb in the city of Rio de Janeiro to try to comprehend how its process of resignification impacted cultural discourses existent about it. Result of the cities growth and one of the defining elements of its modernization, the suburb is a singular space in the constitution of the metropolis. Understanding the definitions this territory gained in cultural discourses is essential to comprehend the modern city. In an attempt to contribute to the theoretical analysis of this theme, this dissertation departs from an historical, sociological and geographical bibliography to read cultural representations of the suburb during the twentieth and early twenty-first century in Rio de Janeiro, aiming to conceptualize and historicize the concept suburb and analyze the relations between urbanism, architecture, imagery and urban experience in the narratives concerning this space.

[pt] Reconhecendo a multiplicidade de dimensões presentes na relação subúrbio-trem, a presente pesquisa tem como objetivo investigar o processo de formação e as transformações ocorridas no bairro de Marechal Hermes (Zona Norte do Rio de Janeiro) com base na implantação dos ramais ferroviários que o atravessam (início do século XX). Além disso, aspira compreender de que maneira a divisão causada por esses elementos físicos influenciou a constituição do território e a organização social do bairro até a atualidade. Orientada por estudos contemporâneos sobre os subúrbios cariocas, a pesquisa busca examinar as implicações da fragmentação espacial no bairro através do estudo de caso, a fim de compreender de que maneira a segregação física causada por esses limites urbanos, permeia o imaginário da população, passando a influenciar em uma escala local, os processos de hierarquização e segregação sociais. Fundamentada nos conceitos apresentados por Merleau-Ponty, Juhani Pallasmaa, Kevin Lynch, Michel de Certeau, Bernard Lepetit, Pierre Bourdieu e Marion Segaud, é proposto um desvio das bases pragmáticas e funcionalistas que até hoje ainda enquadram a arquitetura, para refletir sobre alguns dos aspectos não objetivos relacionados à produção do espaço. Quais seriam os efeitos dos elementos que constituem a paisagem urbana sobre a maneira como percebemos e nos relacionamos com o espaço à nossa volta? Através da abordagem fenomenológica e do espaço em sua dimensão antropológica, quais lições podemos extrair? A fragmentação resultante da implantação dos ramais ferroviários (Supervia e Reta de Honório) no bairro de Marechal Hermes exerce, ainda hoje, uma influência significativa sobre os padrões de ocupação, utilização e apropriação dos espaços. / [en] Recognizing the multiplicity of dimensions present in the suburb-train relationship, this research aims to investigate the process of formation and the transformations that took place in the Marechal Hermes neighborhood (North Zone of Rio de Janeiro) based on the implementation of the railway branches that cross it (beginning of the 20th century). It also aims to understand how the division caused by these physical elements has influenced the constitution of the territory and the social organization of the neighborhood up to the present day. Contemporary studies of Rio s suburbs, examining the implications of spatial fragmentation in the neighborhood through case studies, have encouraged me to understand how the physical segregation caused by these urban boundaries permeates the imagination of the population, influencing the processes of social hierarchization and segregation on a local scale. Based on the concepts presented by Merleau-Ponty, Juhani Pallasmaa, Kevin Lynch, Michel de Certeau, Bernard Lepetit, Pierre Bourdieu, and Marion Segaud, I propose a departure from the pragmatic and functionalist bases that still frame architecture today, to reflect on some of the non-objective aspects related to the production of space. What are the effects of the elements that make up the urban landscape on the way we perceive and relate to the space around us? Through the phenomenological approach and space in its anthropological dimension, what lessons can we draw? The fragmentation resulting from the implementation of the railway branches (Supervia and Reta de Honório) in the Marechal Hermes neighborhood still has a significant influence on the patterns of occupation, use, and appropriation of spaces.
