[en] PARTICLE IMAGE VELOCIMETRY SYSTEM / [pt] SISTEMAS DE VELOCIMETRIA POR IMAGENS DE PARTÍCULAS

JORGE ALBERTO ALMEIDA 22 June 2015 (has links)
[en] The present work describes the development and testo f a whole-field velocimetry system for measuring transient velocity fields in extensive flow regions. The technique employed is known as Particle Image Velocimetry. In this technique, double-exposure images of tracer particles distributed in the fluid and externally illuminated are registered in film or electronic camera. The images are digitized and processed by specially developed computer algorithms based on cross-correlation and autocorrelation techniques. The computer program developed was tested against computer generated flow images. A experimental setup was constructed to capture and analyze several real flow images. The tests conducted with several low-velocity flows yielded satisfactory results.

[en] DESIGN AND QUALIFICATION OF AN APPARATUS FOR THE EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF LAMINAR SEPARATION BUBBLES / [pt] PROJETO E QUALIFICAÇÃO DE UM APARATO PARA O ESTUDO EXPERIMENTAL DE BOLHAS DE SEPARAÇÃO LAMINAR

OMAR ELIAS HORNA PINEDO 14 January 2019 (has links)
[en] The present work involves the design, construction and performance test of an apparatus for the investigation of laminar separation bubbles in a flat plate boundary layer. Laminar separation bubbles are relevant for many engineering applications and the dynamic of such bubbles has a strong impact on the performance of aircrafts and turbines. The separated boundary layer reattaches to the surface due to the laminar-turbulent transition in the bubble region. This dynamic process is highly challenging for flow simulation tools used for engineering purposes. Thus, there is a demand for experimental studies that can be used for calibration of models present in those simulation tools. To this end, an apparatus was designed and built for the water channel of the Laboratory of Fluid Engineering at PUC-Rio. The boundary layer separation on the flat plate was induced by imposing a constant adverse pressure gradient to the flow. To this end a false wall was built, in order to form a converging-diverging channel with the flat plate. Flow separation on the false wall was avoided using a suction mechanism that was designed to reduce locally the boundary layer thickness. Location of suction and suction flow rates were determined with aid of numerical simulations. In addition, it was designed and built a disturbance source to generate Tollmien-Schlichting waves in the boundary layer of the flat plate. This device was used to trigger the boundary layer transition in a controlled manner. All equipment were tested and their designs were validated against experimental measurements. Laser Doppler anemometry and Particle Image Velocimetry techniques were adopted for assessment of each equipment. Results validate the design and show that separation bubbles can be investigated in detail using this apparatus.

[en] STUDY OF FLOW AND HEAT TRANSFER CHARACTERISTICS IN A SWIRLING IMPINGING JET / [pt] ESTUDO DO ESCOAMENTO E TRANSFERÊNCIA DE CALOR EM UM JATO ESPIRALADO INCIDENTE

JULIANA KUHLMANN ABRANTES 26 October 2005 (has links)
[en] The present work is an experimental study of the characteristics of a swirling impinging air jet. The goals of the study are: to evaluate the influence of the presence of a circumferential velocity component in the distribution of the local heat transfer coefficients, to obtain instantaneous velocity fields in the axisymmetric plane, as well as information about the turbulence characteristics in the flow. During the experiments, the influence of the impingement distance and swirl intensity were investigated. As a preliminary validation of the velocity measurement tecniques, an experimental investigation of an axisymmetric free jet was conducted. The results were compared with literature showing good agreement. The spatial distribution of heat transfer coefficients was evaluated by imposing a constant heat flux condition to the plate and measuring temperature of several points along the radial distance of the plate with thermocouples. Local coefficients could then be estimated. Instantaneous axial and radial velocity fields were obtained with Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and tangential velocity profiles (mean and fluctuations) obtained by using Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV). The results showed that the flow patterns change significantly when the tangential component is added. For the highest value of Swirl number, strong recirculation zones were observed in the stagnation region.

[en] DEVELOPMENT OF TECHNIQUE BASED ON FLUORESCENCE TO MEASURE TWOPHASE SLUG FLOW / [pt] DESENVOLVIMENTO DE TÉCNICA BASEADA EM FLUORESCÊNCIA PARA MEDIÇÃO DE ESCOAMENTO BIFÁSICO EM REGIME DE GOLFADA

PAULO HENRIQUE DA SILVA ANICETO 15 April 2008 (has links)
[en] This work presents the implementation of a non-intrusive optical technique for measuring the hydrodynamic characteristics of liquid- gas, two-phase flows. The work was limited to the study of air-water slug flows. The technique implemented, already described in the literature, combines Particle Image Velocimetry - PIV, Laser Induced Fluorescence - LIF, and pulsed background illumination, known as Pulsed Shadow Technique - PST. The combination of these techniques allows the simultaneous measurement of the instantaneous flow field generated in the liquid by the passage of the air bubble, together with the shape and velocity of the bubble. The technique was employed in the study of an air bubble rising in a stagnant liquid layer. The PIV technique was employed in the determination of the instantaneous flow field in the liquid using fluorescent particles illuminated by a pulsed laser sheet. An optical high-pass filter was used to block the light scattered by the air-water interfaces and by the pipe walls, allowing the digital camera employed to only capture the particle positions. A LED panel furnished back illumination at a wave length that passed through the high-pass filter and allowed an accurate determination of the bubble shape. A digital image processing procedure was employed to determine the bubble shape, velocity and liquid flow field. The results obtained revealed, with excellent resolution, the details of the liquid flow at the wake, wall film and nose of the rising bubble, thereby attesting to the quality of the technique implemented.

[en] INSTANTANEOUS LIQUID VELOCITY FIELD MEASUREMENTS IN TWO-PHASE INTERMITTENT FLOW THROUGH HORIZONTAL AND INCLINED PIPES / [pt] MEDIÇÃO DO CAMPO INSTANTÂNEO DE VELOCIDADE DO LÍQUIDO NO ESCOAMENTO BIFÁSICO INTERMITENTE EM TUBOS HORIZONTAIS E INCLINADOS

ROBERTO DA FONSECA JUNIOR 22 March 2010 (has links)
[en] instantaneous liquid velocity fields at the film, nose and tail regions of slugs in horizontal and inclined two phase flow. To this end, a combination of three nonintrusive optical techniques was employed. Two-dimensional particle image velocimetry (PIV) was used to measure the instantaneous liquid velocity field at a meridional plane of the horizontal pipe test section, while a synchronized pulsed back lighting, provided by a matrix of red LED s, illuminated the bubble contours thereby enhancing contrast of the interfaces (Pulsed Shadow Technique - PST). A laser-induced fluorescence technique (LIF) was employed to separate the strong reflections coming from the gas-liquid interfaces produced by the green PIV laser, The tests were conducted on a specially built transparent pipe test section, using air and water as the working fluids. The velocity fields were obtained for flow regimes where the slugs were lightly aerated. The velocity field results in the nose, tail and film regions revealed valuable detailed information that helped to better understand the physics of the flow, besides contributing to the formation of a data bank for supporting the development of two-phase, horizontal slug flow simulations. The work conducted also provided statistical information on the main global variables that characterize the flow, such as, speed and length of gas bubbles and liquid slugs, and the frequency of passage of these structures.

[en] FILM - SPLITTING FLOWS OF VISCOELASTIC LIQUIDS VISUALIZATION / [pt] CARACTERIZAÇÃO DO ESCOAMENTO DE LÍQUIDOS VISCOELÁSTICOS NO PROCESSO DE REVESTIMENTO POR ROTAÇÃO DIRETA

MELISA YVONE ZAMBRANO BECERRA 26 October 2005 (has links)
[en] Roll coating is a common method in the manufacture of a wide variety of products. It is used to apply a thin liquid layer to a continuous flexible substrate. At low speeds, the flow is two-dimensional and steady; as the roll speed is raised, the two-dimensional flow is unstable and is replaced by a steady three-dimensional flow, which results in more or less regular stripes in the machine direction. This type of the instability is commonly called ribbing, it can limit the speed of the process if a smooth film is required as a final product. The liquids used in this process generaly are polimeric solutions, which present Non-Newtonian behavior. It was demonstrated, for Newtonian liquids, that the gradient of the pressure close to the meniscus destabilizes the flow, whereas the surface tension has a stabilizing effect. The critical parameter for the flow stability is the capillary number. For viscoelastic liquids can drastically change the nature of the flow near the free surfaces of the coating bead. The onset of the instabilities occurs at much lower capillary numbers than Newtonian flow case, which falls with the growth of the elasticity. Accurate theoretical predictions of the onset of ribbing when viscoelastic liquids are used is still not available. The mechanisms by which the liquid elasticity makes the flow unstable at Capillary numbers much lower than in the Newtonian case is not completely understood. Recent theoretical predictions have shown that at high Weissenberg number, the recirculation zone, present in the Newtonian flow completely disappears. In this work, film splitting flows between a stationary plate and rotating roll are analyzed experimentally by visualizing the free surface configuration and measuring the velocity field using the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique. Various solutions of low molecular weight polyethylene glycol (PEG) and high molecular weight polyethylene oxide (PEO) in water were used in order to evaluate the effect of mildly viscoelastic behavior on the flow. The goal was to confirm the theoretical predictions of Zevallos et al. (2004) on the effect of the liquid viscoelasticity on the streamline pattern and on the stability of the free surface with respect to three-dimensional disturbances.

[en] The occurrence of slug regime in horizontal pipelines is of special interest for the oil and gas industry due to the unwanted operational risks associated with this flow. Hence, an intense effort has been devoted to the study and to model this flow regime. Predictive tools based on linear Kelvin-Helmhotz stability have been widely applied in the literature for prediction of slug onset. These models are derived from stability analysis of well-defined disturbances. However, for pipe flows, a limited number of experimental studies devoted to investigate the evolution of disturbances that lead to the initiation of slugs is available. In addition, no studies are found using of well define disturbances, which could provide accurate information for validation of models and numerical simulations. The present work addresses the problem by the studying of the evolution of controlled waves excited at the liquid interface. To this end, an oscillating paddle was employed. The work focuses the characterization of interfacial waves within the linear regime, which correspond to the regime of most models available in the literature. The amplitude threshold for linear waves was experimentally estimated. The driving signal of the oscillating paddle was synchronized with image acquisitions, enabling phase locked measurements of the waves and hence the use of ensemble averaging techniques. Phase-locked measurements of the velocity field in the liquid and gas layers were performed using off-axis Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique and Shadowgraph. Mean flow, streamwise and wall normal fluctuations were measured simultaneously in the liquid and gas phases. For a range of flow rates and exciting wave frequencies the combined techniques employed allowed the extraction from the measured velocity fields, the coherent part of flow fluctuations related with the exciting waves. The results obtained have shown, seemingly, for the first time, that interfacial modes in both phases are nearly independent of near wall disturbances within the range of parameters covered in this work. Characterization of nonlinear waves was briefly investigated indicating changes in the mean velocity. Moreover, a correlation for wave friction factor based on wave and flow parameters was obtained, leading to an improvement on the liquid heightand pipe head loss estimation when are combined into the closure relations used for the 1-D models. The experimental methodology proposed in this work is a valuable tool to produce accurate information that can be used to validate and improve theoretical models and numerical simulations. It can contribute to the understanding of the physical mechanisms involved in the transition from stratified to slug flows.

[en] Throughout history, fluid engineering is one of the most important areas of engineering due to its impact in the areas of transportation, energy and the military. The measurement of velocity fields is important for studies in aerodynamics and hydrodynamics. The techniques for measuring the velocity field are mostly optical techniques, with emphasis on the PIV technique. On the other hand, in recent years, important advances in computer vision, based on convolutional neural networks, have shown promise for improving the processing of optical techniques. In this work, a hybrid approach between cross-correlation and cascade of convolutional neural networks was used to develop a new PIV technique. The project was based on the latest work of PIV with an artificial neural network to develop the architecture of the networks and their form of training. Several cascade formats of neural networks were tested until they reached a format that allowed the error to be reduced by an order of magnitude for uniform flow. In addition to the development of the cascade for uniform flow, knowledge was generated to make cascades for other types of flows.
