Previous issue date: 2017-06-30 / CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Microbial fuel cells (MFC) are electrochemical devices that exploit the ability of
some species of microorganisms to use electrodes as final acceptors of electrons in their
metabolism. The interest in this technology is associated with the possibility of using
different compounds, including domestic and industrial effluents, in the generation of
electric energy. In this context, the study of MFC that use residual frying oils (RFO) as
substrate gains attention by bringing an alternative both from an environmental and an
energetic point of view. The objective of this work was to model the best conditions for
the simultaneous degradation of these RFO and electric current generation of a
microbial fuel cell inoculated with Shewanella putrefaciens. For this purpose, a factorial
and central compound planning (CCP) design was used, in which microbial metabolism
was studied under the effects of pH, temperature, medium agitation, oil concentration
and time. The experimental data were obtained in a two-chamber MFC, an anode and a
cathode, separated by a proton exchange membrane. The anode was inoculated with S.
putrefaciens under anaerobic conditions and fed with RFO, while the cathode was fed
with tap water and salinized tap water. In the anode, an electrode was used as a graphite
cloth with a polypropylene mesh and an aluminum heatsink on the cathode. Both were
connected externally by an electrical resistance. During the operation of the system, the
anode compartment was operated in batch mode. The results show that in less than two
days of operation the current generation had reached a stable value, proving the
exoelectrogenic capacity of the bacteria. It was observed that S. putrefaciens did not
develop a biofilm on the surface of the electrodes with samples from the University
Restaurant (UR), but adhered to the electrode with domestic oil as a substrate,
demonstrating a direct mechanism of extracellular electron transfer to establish the
electrical contact with The electrode. In general, the mathematical modeling of the
degradation of the oils for the simultaneous generation of electric current was possible,
requiring further studies of the chemical composition of the oils for the evaluation of the
efficiency of the MFC with the chemical parameters, since it was only possible to
analyze from the point of electrical parameters. In addition, it was possible to verify that
the amount of bacterial colonies does not interfere in the generation of tension, being
this one generated of stable form with small cellular concentrations.
Ambos estavam
conectados externamente por uma resistência elétrica. Durante a operação do sistema, o

Previous issue date: 2011-08-09 / CNPq - Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / The frying process is a rapid procedure and appreciated by the population, in order to acquire
the sensory enjoyable characteristics food. There are numerous substances that alter the oil
and fried foods obtained by hydrolytic reactions, oxidative and thermoxidative. The intake of
these substances are harmful to health and disposal in local inappropriate, such as, sinks /
drains, creeks, drainage can aggravate environmental problems, as well as promoting the
pollution of rivers, leading to increased cost of water treatment and sewage and the
proliferation of insects. This work was conducted to assess the level of degradation of waste
frying oils (OFR) and their use as feedstock for biodiesel production, providing a
knowledge/technology field of transformation of residual oil for frying in our region and
therefore add economic value to this waste and minimize environmental problems caused by
their disposal. Different samples of frying oil waste restaurant, residence and pastry were
collected and characterized by analytical methods according to Instituto Adolfo Lutz, the
results of free fatty acids was below 1%, the average acid value of 1.25 mg KOH / g oil,
peroxide index of less than 10 meq O2/kg oil, saponification index ranged from 110.13 to
228.6 mg KOH / g oil and iodine in the range 85.96 to 106.17 g I2.100g-1. The fatty acid
composition of these oils was similar to that of refined soybean oil, with a predominance of
palmitic acid (C16:0), oleic acid (C18:1) and linoleic acid (C18:2), representing over 80% of
the composition these oils. The viscosity averaged 43.65 mm2.s-1 and the average density was
0.9210 g.cm-3, values similar to soybean oil. The pastry samples had values above these
parameters, resulting from the polymerization of the oil. Samples of frying of residence in
relation to restaurant and pastry showed greater resistance to oxidation in the Rancimat test.
The transesterification reactions were carried out via basic catalysis in reflux system and
PARR reactor (model 5500), the optimized conditions, molar ratio of 1:6 (oil: methanol), 1%
NaOH, 60 minutes reaction time and temperature of 65oC and 70oC. Biodiesel yields were
obtained on average 90% and 87% respectively. Samples of biodiesel OFR were characterized
by infrared spectroscopy, with characteristic spectrum of methyl esters. The biodiesel the
(OFR) had lower oxidative stability to values recommended (6 h) due to degradation
processes arising in the process of frying. The results of TG / DTG in an inert atmosphere, it
was possible to analyze these volatility and thermal stability of biodiesel. The parameters
determined for biodiesel OFR presented in accordance with the resolution of the ANP,
namely, acid value, iodine value, viscosity and density. It was found that in Manaus-AM there
is no registration about the production of biodiesel in industrial scale, justified by the isolation
of the region, which entails in high cost of inputs for the biodiesel industry. This study
indicated that Manaus has a potential supply of 296,100 liters per month of residual oil in the
home, and timely deployment of a plant of 10,659 L / day of biodiesel. The costs of
production and investment were also analyzed.

diesel leve (235°C-305ºC) e diesel pesado (305ºC-400 ºC).
This paper studied the cracking process termocatalítico the frying oil in bench and pilot scales,
varying the percentage of sodium carbonate catalyst 5 and 10% m / m of raw material used and
temperature of 440 º C. The objective was to obtain hydrocarbon mixtures rich in diesel fraction.
The frying oil was neutralized and dried characterized in relation to the Acid Value,
Saponification, Viscosity, Density and Refractive Index. After cracking, the liquid product
obtained was purified by decanting the aqueous phase and simple filtration bench scale. This
product was fractionated by fractional distillation and condensate were collected in a separating
funnel according to the distillation range of gasoline (40ºC-175ºC), kerosene (175ºC-235ºC),
light diesel (235°C-305°C) and heavy diesel (305°C-400°C). Were characterized both physical as
chemical composition of the liquid products and their fractions. We also carried out the evolution
of the cracking process in pilot scale, with the behavior of physical characteristics and chemical
composition of the product formed during the cracking process. The results showed that the
catalyst sodium carbonate supplied products of low acidity and good characteristics for use as
fuel. The variation in the percentage of catalyst significantly influences the physical and chemical
composition of both the product and its fractions. It was found also that the cracking
termocatalítico the frying oil promotes the formation of hydrocarbons in rich fraction of diesel
(19.16% and 41.18% light diesel heavy diesel to the test with 10% Na2CO3 and 13, 53% light and
heavy diesel 52.73% for the test with 5% Na2CO3 ). The time intervals generate the final cracking
fuel with low acid content and physicochemical properties according to the specified standard
mineral diesel.

This study aimed to investigate the synthesis of biodiesel from frying oil through the
hydroesterification reaction, using as heterogeneous catalytic support – vermiculite. Both the
biodiesel obtained and the raw material (frying oil) were characterized by physical-chemical,
thermal and absorption spectrophotometry in the UV-Visible region for better understanding.
The synthesis of biodiesel by hydroesterification involved two steps: hydrolysis and
esterification, whereby the residual frying oil was subjected to the step of hydrolysis in an
autoclave reactor at a temperature of 300 ° C for 03 hours. After the hydrolysis, the glycerin
was removed and the fatty acids generated were subjected to the esterification step and
processed under the following conditions: 6: 1 molar ratio of the ethyl alcohol / fatty acid in
the presence of 5% of the catalyst (vermiculite) relative to the mass of the oil. Subsequently,
the mixture was subjected to the stirring process and transferred to the autoclave reactor at
200°C for 01 hour. After that, the mixture was decanted for 2 hours and the phases were
separated. The dense phase – biodiesel – was characterized according to the standards of the
National Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuel. Thus, the reaction yield in relation
to the initial mass of the residual frying oil for biodiesel was 66.65%. It is suggested that this
yield was compromised by the acidity of the obtained biodiesel (0.61mg KOH/g),
contributing to the release of the free fatty acids in the medium. Regarding the thermal study,
the thermogravimetric curves showed that biodiesel is more volatile compared to the frying
oil and presented two stages of decomposition: the first probably corresponding to the ethyl
ester volatilization, with 83.1% of mass loss, indicating the conversion to
monoacylglycerides; and the second stage with 14.3% of mass loss, attributed to the presence
of diacylglyceride and/or triacylglyceride traces not converted to esters of ethyl fatty acids.
The absorption spectra in the infrared region confirmed the presence of the strongly acidic
fatty acid esters of 1749.7 cm-1; however, the presence of medium-sized vibrational band,
corresponding to OH group stretching, is also present at 3600 to 3300cm-1, corroborating the
thermal and physicochemical profile, confirming the presence of moisture and/or total nonconversion
of glyceride hydrolysis. Finally, according to the results presented, this study
proved to be feasible in terms of conversion, although it requires further investigation,
manipulating the reactional conditions.

Previous issue date: 2013-02-16 / Fundação Araucária / This study aimed to propose a sustainable and optimized model of residual frying oil collection as raw material for the production of biodiesel from educational establishments, in accordance with current legislation. A process of collecting waste frying oil involves different steps, with a large number of participants, and should involve the society as a whole, so we carried out interviews with the main social performers that may be involved in supporting this process in the city of Cascavel, West of Paraná. The use of public education institutions that have Elementary School II as collection point is important, because it involves children and teenagers who are in training for the development of environmental awareness and they can be the disseminators of this culture in their familiar surroundings, resulting in the extension of the project to the whole community. In addition to the environmental gains, the economic gains can also be achieved with the sale of the waste for processing into biodiesel through Parents, Teachers, and Employees Associations (APTEs), which may apply the resources to improve teaching conditions. However, despite the potential benefits for the use of this waste it is highlighted the lack of specific laws and federal incentives for the use of this raw material for biodiesel production. Some incentive Laws at the state and municipal level were identified, however, a federal law would surely drive these actions in Brazil. It was also possible to identify that one way to reduce the cost of biodiesel produced from waste frying oil, which has been dispersed in urban areas, is using an optimized route collection and waste transport. Through the reverse logistics of waste frying oil, it is possible to conclude that sustainability, besides the application of effective legislation and the collection route optimization for cost reduction, makes up the conditions for the creation of a program of collecting waste frying oil for biodiesel production, in addition to the involvement of society, which is constituted as a source of generating waste and can also become the indirect beneficiary of a project like this.
