The harmonic idiom in the works of 'les six'

Bobbitt, Richard January 1963 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University / This study presents a descriptive outline of the principal harmonic devices employed by Darius Millhard, Arthur Honegger, Francis Poulenc, Georges Auric, Germaine, Tailleferre, and Louis Durey. The emphasis is upon the particular techniques peculiar to each composer. In addition, all the characteristic mechanisms pertaining to the composer's harmonic idiom, per se, are isolated - i.e. technical analyses include those pertinent factors surrounding the usage of harmony as well as elements intrinsically peculiar to harmonic structure alone. The attempt is then made to relate the devices of the harmonic idiom to the significant movements in music at the time Les Six were producing most prolifically as a group. The role played by polyharmony, for example, in the trend towards privitism and divionism; or the relation of polymodalit to the general movement towards superposition, which was characteristic of the arts in the first quarter of the twentieth century. La Musique et les arts dans la collaboration du Groupe des Six avec les Ballets Suédois (1920-1925) / Music and arts in the collaboration of the Groupe des Six with the Ballets suédois (1920-1925)

Vergnaud, Sabine 01 October 2010 (has links)
The Ballets suédois was formed in Paris in 1920 by Rolf de Maré, director, and Jean Biirlin, choreographer. In its five-year existence, this company asserted its wish to break away from the Russianhegemony by proposing daring performances. The most innovative of them were created in collaborationwith composers from 'les six' such as Milhaud, Poulenc, Honeger, Auric or Tailleferre, and also with thecontribution of writers and painters such as Jean Cocteau, Paul Claudel, Blaise Cendrars, RicciottoCanudo, Fernand Léger, Jean Hugo or Irène Lagut. Between 1921 and 1923, the company stagedMilhaud's L'Homme et son désir and La Création du monde, Honegger's Skating Rink, Tailleferre'sMarchand d'oiseaux and The Marriage on the Eiffel Tower by 'les six' (to which Durey did notcontribute) at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées; so many prototypes on which drama, painting and musicnot only imposed constant choreographic renewal, but a renewal of the ballet as a genre. This thesis dealswith the connection between those compositions and the different forms of art they combine in the samecreative energy. The genetic study is based on the comparison of the handwritten scores with thetapuscripts and the manuscripts of the librettos (kept at the Dansmuseet in Stockholm or at the FundsBlaise Cendrars of the Swiss Literary Archives in Bern). It also studies correspondence, models ofscenery, costumes, choreographic sketches and aims at defining the place and role of al! the performers in_those ballets. It stresses the impact the collaboration between the Swedish and 'les six' had, not only onthe evolution of dancing, but also on thal of other forms of arts.

Francis Poulenc et la musique populaire / Francis Poulenc and the popular music

Arbey, Dominique 14 October 2011 (has links)
The composer Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) was particularly influenced by the popular music of his time. In order to study this very specific aspect of his works, our research will take into account the musical production of the composer, his personal testimonies (such as correspondence, radio programs and various pieces of writing) and all documents related to the creation and reception of his works. When composing Bal Masqué (The Masked Ball) the composer’s aim was not to copy popular music but just to make use of some of its characteristics. Just like a painter he created what he would call ‘portraits de music-hall’ (‘Music-hall portraits’). For this impregnation to be fully appreciated, our analyses will tackle different musical parameters such as melody, rhythm, harmony, structures, orchestration and vocal effects. The purpose of our research involving socio-cultural perspectives, the analysis of those technical aspects cannot be dissociated from the historical context relative to the composer and, to a wider extent, to the ‘Groupe des Six’.

Kolb, Fabian 29 October 2020 (has links)
The central role that avant-garde music and dance theatre played in the interplay and synthesis of the arts and media in the 1920s, particularly in Paris, is well known. However, the creative potential of ballet has hardly been recognized in its manifold relationships with film and cinematic-inspired expression. The extent to which especially ballet music interacted with the latest cinematographic principles and techniques and referred to cinematic aesthetics in a variety of ways can instructively be seen regarding the productions of the Ballets Suédois. This is discussed in this article with an exemplary look at Les Mariés de la Tour Eiffel (1921), Within the Quota (1923), Skating Rink (1922) and Relâche (1924). By that it becomes clear that the transmedia inclusion of cinematographic ideas not only inspired the vocabulary of avant-garde dance and modern choreography, but was also distinctively reflected in the conception and composition of film-affected music.
