Van der Wart, Adriaan Dirk Frederich 16 October 2007 (has links)
The research is a hermeneutic interpretation in practical theology on the communitas phase through which the DR Church in South Africa has been moving since 1994. It would seem that the church is currently close to the limen of reintegration at the end of such a communitas phase. A contextual analysis was made of the events before and during the communitas phase to gage the influence thereof on the section of society that falls under the ministry of the DR Church. The study upheld the hypothesis that the transitional phase that was heralded for South Africa after 1994 has placed the DR Church in a late communitas phase, before the limen of integration. In this phase, leadership identity and development could be defined more clearly in terms of a structural model as support mechanism The shift from an authoritarian office structure that before 1994 was politically entwined with the government and clearly visible, to a structure that seems to prefer to be largely invisible and without voice in the current dispensation, has strongly influenced the way in which the various offices in the church are viewed, as well as church leadership. St Paul linked leadership to the broad milieu within which leaders were required to function in the early church. This means that leadership in the church should be driven by the charismata, because it does not depend exclusively on good management. The study makes it clear that although leadership and management are related, the gift of leadership differs from management skills. As the church is responsible for assisting its members to make informed decisions in a postmodern world, strong church leadership comes with visionary leadership. With regard to contentious issues of our time, judgemental pronouncements that are made without thinking tend to push people further towards the edge of the church and the Christian faith. Leadership identity within a team (in which relationships are also important) is supported by the specialised leadership tasks for which pastors are responsible. The research sees this premise as a broadening of the Primus inter pares principal. A structural model defines the various tasks within the parish and makes leaders responsible for their work. In the process, leadership can be confirmed and empowered. The DR Church has reached a strategic inflection point in its history and to remain relevant in the future the church will have to give serious thought to paradigm shifts with regard to church leadership. Particularly in the growing number of peri-urban congregations, the church has no choice but to appoint senior pastors who have specialised leadership abilities (gifts) to lead the church in an attempt to bring order in the chaos that currently surrounds the ministry. Well-planned models for the ministry will serve as mechanisms of support and once again clearly define the identity of the pastor. / Thesis (PhD (Practical Theology))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Practical Theology / PhD / unrestricted

Ström, Sofia January 2020 (has links)

Purity or Pragmatism: Mutual Aid in Practice

Campbell, Ami Olson January 2023 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Alyssa W. Goldman / Pandemic mutual aid groups are part of a contemporary mutual aid movement which intends to marry the spontaneous suspension of social boundaries of post-disaster collective action with sustained community-building and social justice. This comparative case study examines how two such radical social change organizations navigate the tension between ideology and the need for resources. Specifically, I ask what strategies organizers deployed in pursuit of their dual mandate, under the banner of ‘solidarity not charity.’ Despite virtually identical philosophies, visions, and circumstances, I find that organizers deployed different resource mobilization strategies to access and generate moral, cultural, and human resources. These strategic differences directly influenced organizational outcomes: One group continued to operate more than two years after organizing, while the other was on an indefinite hiatus. The findings depart from what might be predicted by a longstanding focus on material resources in resource mobilization theory, and support the call for more attention to culture and ideology in resource mobilization scholarship. / Thesis (MA) — Boston College, 2023. / Submitted to: Boston College. / This research intends to outline philosophical principles and creative and methodological procedures that are essential in the progressing artistic project Projeto Árvore / Tree Project, developed by the interdisciplinary collective group URUBUS since 2005. The group investigates action strategies emphasizing approaches to relational nature. An action-research was made with such purpose, which included reviews of creative process diaries, bibliography analysis, field research, interviews with the artists and other participants of the actions, analysis of the multimedia content (pictures, audio and video) produced along the work and focusing on relational researches-actions-practices. Pleurer les morts, gueuler la mort : disposer des défunts "indigents" / Crying and shouting : the disposal of "indigents"

Guffanti, Lucas 07 December 2016 (has links)
This research analyzes what happens to the deceased labeled as ‘paupers’ and managed through non-governmental organizations and public means in France. Where previous literature on the subject emphasized social categories such as homeless people and theories of sacrifice, this work puts forward conflicting public interests given to the dead labeled as ‘paupers’. This recearch draws mostly on ethnographic fieldwork with the Collectif Les Morts de la Rue, a parisian organization denouncing the life and death conditions of homeless people since 2001, and in charge of the funeral ceremony of any unclaimed body since 2003. The investigation shows how two groups of volunteers with two different primary interests developed over time. The first group is mainly concerned with political activism in favor of people living and dying on the streets. The second group focuses more on non-political rituals for all unclaimed bodies, regardless of their social status. The two groups coexist with mutual references to the dead and to humanity after death. Through rituals and public ceremonies using emotions, they create symbolic communities gathering both the living and dead. The strong emphasis of the first group on inequality and socio-economic structure is sometimes at odds with the more general emphasis of the second group on the universal bond between human beings, showing how shared references to death and humanity are not enough to cover diverging motivations inside the same organisation.

Pilgrimage has been showed by several authors as a journey of a modern person in search connection to a sacred or yet, a human with a feeling of a sacred connection. However, during this pilgrimage we can see that since Mauss (1925) we call body technics dimension in which learning, transmission and perfectioning happen before, during and after travel. Efficient traditional action, as Mauss (1925) defines, and it depends of learning, the body technics take in the Bourdieu (1994) works the properties of been incorporated. In this point of view, the pilgrimage can be thinking as an interchange space of learning and body habits, called by Bourdieu of practical reason, that nothing owe to the intellect or a debate reason. Transmitted or introduced without pass by language dimension, but practical, the body habits involved in pilgrimage is my investigation object. Methodologically this is a research of qualitative way that gets anthropology relationship. Through the field work, observation and open interviews, qualified research, I look for understand the transmission and learnig process of body technics ( Mauss, 1925) or habits incorporation (Bourdieu, 1994) in a pilgrimage path named “Caminhos da Piedade”. The path that I am looking for is 21 kilometers long, in between Cataguases, MG and Piacatuba, MG cities. My question is to know how the religion experience pilgrimage lived deeply for a group of people that the physical and emotional get to the body technics learning to help them in this journey and how the body and emotion support in the field performance, the pilgrimage. In this way, the main object of this research is to see how is built the pilgrimage body and emotions in some ritual context, in the way that, after this social transformation and by communitas moment, has the body modified and high emotions to get from Piacatuba into Nossa Senhora da Piedade. Analyze the body, see how the pilgrimage body is build and how its holds together with its emotions, felt and expressed, in the field is my research object.

Bluegrass and Old-Time in Catalonia: An Ethnographic Case Study of Aesthetic Communitas

Luchtan, Michael J 01 December 2018 (has links) (PDF)
This is an ethnographic case study of a musical community in Catalonia centered around the performance of bluegrass and old-time music. By using Victor and Edith Turners’ ideas of normative communitas, this paper identifies an aesthetic communitas model which describes a community centered around a performative genre. Through participant observation in the 16th Annual Al Ras Bluegrass and Old Time Music Festival and interviews with local musicians, fans, venue owners, and luthiers, the ethnographic narrative details the characteristics of the aesthetic communitas in Catalonia and searches for associations of Appalachia that accompany the cross-cultural manifestation of bluegrass and old-time music in Catalonia. The conclusion examines the significance of the aesthetic communitas model and suggests further lines of research for this model.

Puaxant Tuvip: Powerlands Southern Paiute Cultural Landscapes and Pilgrimage Trails

Van Vlack, Kathleen A. January 2012 (has links)
Southern Paiute people stipulate that when the world was formed, the Creator gave them sole possession of the lands that constitute the traditional Southern Paiute nation and the Creator gave them the responsibilities to tend to the land, resources, and each other. As a result, from these stewardship duties, Southern Paiute people developed complex socio-ecological methods for promoting and maintaining both ecological and spiritual balance. One method was used by medicine people or Puha'gants and it involved them traveling to special ceremonial areas to acquire knowledge and power. These journeys required Puha'gants to undergo intense purification and preparation and they traveled along designated trails to places far away from their home communities. The pilgrimage process allowed the pilgrims to gain knowledge and power at their destination places to use in ceremonies to restore balance and promote sustainability in their home communities. My dissertation study examines six pilgrimage trails across Southern Paiute territory in an effort to understand this process. As a way to frame my discussion, this analysis draws upon four concepts--(1) Southern Paiute place logic, (2) cultural landscapes, (3) pilgrimage, and (4) communitas. For trail systems under study, I examine the types of places visited and their associated performance characteristics, and specifically the types of relationships pilgrims, or Puhahivats with each other, the places visited, and objects used.

Praxis indígena y gubernamentalidad

Katzer, María Leticia 06 March 2012 (has links)
