The design challenge of this project was to create an engaging environment for learning; one that through its architecture, encourages discovery, sensory and intellectual development and stewardship of the environment. This school seeks to embody the Montessori ideal of "structure and freedom". Through the design process, an "architecture of opposites" emerged — edges and endings, light and dark, solid and transparent, quiet and noise, city and nature, bridge and barrier. It is this struggle between opposing forces that creates a dynamic environment. A site at the intersection of P and 26th Streets in Georgetown on the western edge of Rock Creek Park was chosen for the project because of its nature as a haven within an urban context. / Master of Architecture

Where are the boundaries between past and present, dream and reality, private and public, action and perception? Upon these opposites, we journey through our lives. If the purpose of architecture is more than the construction of a shelter, then architecture also is a reflection of these contradictions in a human mind. The goal of this project is to illustrate how the notion of life's journey is similar to the experience of theatre, and how the architecture of the theatre can answer the questions above. / Master of Architecture

I started this thesis project with my curiosity of the idea of layering. This idea has been used in everywhere from computers, fashion to culinary. How about the idea of layering in architecture? I studied the idea of layering in geology. I chose it because I believe geology is very close to architecture in term of physicality, even form and space. We could not separate architecture and geology; architecture inhabits geology. I decided to focus on one most important idea of layering in geology and most interesting for me: the idea of stacking. If we look back to the ancient building, stacking is the basic system to build a building. And for me it is very interesting to see the possibility to apply this idea with all new materials and technology that we have now. In this project I tried to experiment to do stacking from several different materials: concrete, stone, glass, and wood. The project is a health club located in an urban fabric of Georgetown, Washington D.C., between M Street and Potomac River. The site has potential to create a better connection between the lively street of M Street and Potomac River which will be developed in the future. As a private building in an urban area, the building should be able to accommodate urban needs of its surrounding. Therefore the relation between the layers of public and private become very important issue in this project. The building, which program is basically exercise rooms and baths, is expressing the idea of stacking of public and private layers. The running tract area on the second floor and the roof garden on the roof top of the building are accessible to public. Then the building is pushed to one side of the site to create a plaza for a better access from M Street to the riverside. Most idea of stacking in this project applied horizontally because I studied the idea of stacking in geology which is more horizontal than vertical. / Master of Architecture

This dissertation examined to what degree traditional students were impacted by the institutional core values at a Southern Baptist college. The subjects of mission statements, core values, and college impact were defined. Special attention was given to the eight institutional core values being examined in this study. The current study was conducted at Georgetown College. Located within the eleven state region that is encompassed by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accrediting agency, Georgetown College is a member of the Association of Southern Baptist Colleges and Schools. The goal of Georgetown College, broadly defined, is to provide a quality educational program within the context of a values-based Christian atmosphere. The sample of the current study included all the traditional freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors at Georgetown College at the beginning of the fall semester of 2003. Data gathering consisted of two concurrent lines of inquiry: similarities and differences in students' agreement with the institutional core values. These lines of inquiry were analyzed according to four specific areas of interest including students' class year, gender, ethnic background, and religious affiliation. A value statement index was created for use in this study. The core values of community and integrity were rated by the students as the most important values in the study. The Christian core values showed a general increase among almost all of the students from the freshmen to the senior year. The core values concerning diversity and cultural enrichment programs were rated as the least important values in the study. The presence of a Christian community was determined to be the key ingredient for Southern Baptist colleges to impact positively the value systems of their traditional students. / This item is only available to students and faculty of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. The design of an urban retreat within an industrial building in Georgetown, DC provides an opportunity to experience water in the built environment. The location of the building between two bodies of water—the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal and the Potomac River—creates an opportunity to connect water and the visitors. Management of the water to ensure responsible resource use was researched and accommodated in the design. Water is further used to shape the space and the moods created by the volumes, materials and finishes. The final project provides a luxurious shower and locker room, a series of pools, and a tea room, open to the sky, across three levels.

Photography now days challenge our perception of space, light, and architecture. Photography has challenge the way we perceive, interact and communicate in the world. In today society photography has find ways to communicate faster through images. Technology has played a big part on how we exchange pictures making it very accessible to all ages and cultures. As photography has become more accessible and it has become more technological advance, new challenges and problems have emerge. I consider that society has lost the ability to be aware of two basic essential elements which are light and space. These two elements are very important in photography but also in the human physical and emotional existence. I wanted to celebrate the learning process of photography and to be more conscious of the superficial world we live in today. I consider that by educating new generation the process of light and space can influence how people can become more in touch with its spiritual being. By providing a educational space in Georgetown where people are able to interact with visual media and learn the process of photography can have a positive impact individually and collectively. Considering that many people visit Georgetown every year became a important portal to spread the knowledge globally. / Master of Architecture
