<p>This thesis was undertaken in order to determine whether or not an innovative company in general would be classified as a Cleantech company and how this could be done.</p><p>Cleantech is a diverse range of products and services that harness renewable materials and energy sources and substantially reduce the use of all resources and dramatically cut or eliminate emissions and waste. So far Cleantech is a fairly new concept which has caught a lot of Investors attention, making it even more interesting to study.</p><p>In the thesis report, the data used ranges from face to face interview results, telephone interview results, email information, documents and various articles. Apart from having a general aim, the thesis also looks at a case study in order to have an in depth study. HTC Sweden AB is the case study company that has been studied. The company is located in Söderköping Sweden, and it specialises in professional floor systems. The company is focused on being innovative while maintaining its environmental consciousness.</p><p>With the use of a Backcasting methodology, various strategies were suggested on how HTC Sweden AB would be globally recognised as a Cleantech company; having discovered that it already qualifies to be called Cleantech. The suggested strategies for HTC Sweden AB include:</p><p>- Marketing HTC Sweden AB as Cleantech</p><p>- Promoting the companies environmental image</p><p>- Focus on energy technology</p><p>The thesis also discusses how other companies in general would also be able to use the strategies that have been suggested for HTC AB.</p>

Is Clean Green? : A qualitative study of cleantech entrepreneurs' motives and goals.Oscanoa, Mery January 2010 (has links)
This paper focuses on companies within the cleantech industry (clean technology and its derivation “cleantech”) that have started up and produced clean techniques to the industrial world. The main purpose of this study is to contribute a better understanding of cleantech entrepreneurs’ motivations and influences to start up a cleantech company. This understanding, in turn, will provide regulatory agencies and society the key factors to stimulate cleantech entrepreneurial activity which take the environment and social problems into consideration. Thus, this study attempt to answer the following question: Why do entrepreneurs choose to run a cleantech company? In order to fulfill the main purpose of this project, a qualitative study was conducted. The qualitative study was performed as an unstructured interview of twelve founders of cleantech companies. The cleantech companies were still in the in the start –up stage and some are at an even earlier stage. The companies were selected with the assist of Swentec’s mapping of cleantech companies in Sweden and ETAPs (Environmental Technologies Action Plan). In the theory chapter, this study contributes with a new framework of motives and goals for ecopreneurship. This new framework originates from the studies on the driving forces of ecopreneurship (Schaltegger (2002), Linnanen (2002), Valley & Taylor (2002) and Pastakia (2002). The new framework recognizes four new types of ecopreneurs: eco-idealists, eco-innovators, ad-hoc enviropreneurs and environment opportunist. This typology is used to position and analyze cleantech entrepreneurs who participated in this study. In the empirical chapter, the findings revealed that the cleantech entrepreneurs’ motivations lie primarily in the opportunity to convert their innovation of techniques into concrete business and succeed in the private sector. Due to the fact that the great majority of entrepreneurs are academic researchers with a doctoral degree in engineering, their personal motives can be characterized as the pursuit of a “need for achievement”, “independence” and “extensive experience” in the field of cleantech development. Furthermore, the cleantech entrepreneurs were thoroughly engaged in social and environmental problems. They pursue sustainability because they believe that their work contributes to create sustainable values in society. As a result, cleantech entrepreneurs are ecopreneurs. This study also showed that these values require influencing factors such as law and regulations, customers who demand clean technology in their manufacture of products, services and overall processes. However, the cleantech companies argued that this influences especially regulations not provide enough incentives for cleantech development in order to address the environmental problem successfully. An implication of these findings is that government’s support should not be an obstacle but ensuring a sustainable society.

Abnormal returns in the renewable energy and cleantech sectorPalmquist, Samuel January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to further examine the market dynamics of M&As in the cleantech and renewable energy industry. This study analyzes the abnormal returns of 273 announced and 54 completed buyout acquisitions that took place between 1997 and 2014. The event study method is used to test if cleantech deals experience higher returns than traditional energy and mining deals, if deal completions display similar effects as deal announcements (which is the unique contribution of this thesis) and if homogenous deals experience higher abnormal returns than heterogeneous deals. The outcomes are that the traditional energy and mining sector outperforms the cleantech sectors in homogenous deals. That deal completions effect follows the announcements effect for 11 out of 15 groups and that homogenous deals outperform heterogeneous deals.

Why are Swedish cleantech firms failing to internationalize? : A qualitative study investigating the barriers, drivers and internationalization decisions of private Swedish cleantech firms.Karlsson, Oscar, Rydqvist, Fredrik January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate what barriers and drivers influences the internationalization of private Swedish cleantech firms. The model of a multiple case study was chosen together with a qualitative method and an abductive approach. This was done by acquiring primary information from seven private cleantech companies, all located in Sweden and active in international markets. Furthermore, the theoretical framework presented the Uppsala model, network perspective, international new ventures, born globals, transaction cost theory and the OLI-model. With this theoretical framework, a conceptual model was created which shows how the parts are connected. In the empirical chapter, the primary data is presented to visualize what each individual company said regarding the different constructs of internationalization, drivers, barriers and internationalization decisions. Moreover, the analysis chapter visualizes the similarities and the dissimilarities between the theory and the empirical findings. The thesis concludes that there are both general, as well as specific barriers and drivers that are influential in the internationalization process of private Swedish cleantech firms. These are shown to influence the internationalization decision of managers to take an incremental approach to internationalization. The authors of the thesis also present the view that Swedish cleantech companies are generally too small, lack the financial resources and managerial drive needed to internationalize. The authors also present the theoretical and practical implications and provide recommendations for future research.

Swedish Cleantech Opportunities in China : From a Business Network PerspectiveLiu, Dan, Fu, Yanwei January 2011 (has links)
The emerging cleantech market in China will bring new business opportunities for Swedish cleantech SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises). In such an internationalization process, business network building is an important approach that Swedish entrepreneurs should consider about. Guanxi is a culture pattern in China and plays important role in business of Chinese context. The purpose of the thesis is to find how business network and guanxi affect on Swedish SMEs’ internationalization, especially their business with China in the cleantech industry. Based on market information from pre-study, four propositions connected with business network and guanxi are generated for Swedish SMEs in their business with China. Later, four cases are selected to match raised propositions for deeper analysis. By the theory of guanxi and business network internationalization, each proposition and case gives a specific view to analyze and understand this topic from an explorative way. Several conclusions are drawn by the analysis. First, guanxi plays an important role in network building for China market, and the native Chinese can provide great help in such a guanxi building process. Second, the business network can bring valuable information and business opportunities for Swedish SMEs in their business with China. Third, it is beneficial for Swedish cleantech SMEs to cooperate with Chinese state owned companies in their business network. Fourth, Chinese local SMEs cannot gain competitive advantage by guanxi building because the foreign competitors can copy or imitate with proper strategy to learn the skill to connect with Chinese people in the market.

Overall aim of this master’s thesis is to describe and identify perceived barriers in Swedish businesses within solar energy field and analyze, based on four theoretical viewpoints, how these barriers can be handled. In other words how can the barriers be overcome or eliminated to better succeed in the commercialization process? The method applied is qualitative in which data has been collected through phone interviews originated from seven Cleantech businesses which operate within solar energy. Furthermore this thesis has a descriptive- and an explorative purpose. Empirical findings have showed that barriers depend upon the company itself, but also the community, academic- and governmental institutions. Some businesses do not have an international point of view, instead they have costs aspects in mind. Priorities seem to be a crucial factor when it comes to commercialization. The Swedish government does not contribute enough support to solar energy sector. There is lack of combination in commercialization and technical aspects within the educational system.

Previous issue date: 2012-05-07 / Este trabalho procura identificar e analisar as particularidades inerentes ao investimento em tecnologias limpas (Cleantech) no Brasil que fazem destes ativos uma classe tão promissora ao investimento da indústria de Private Equity e Venture Capital (PE/VC). Foram conduzidas entrevistas semi-estruturadas em profundidade com alguns gestores de fundos de PE/VC do mercado brasileiro, e três estudos de caso: uma empresa num segmento do setor agrícola (aquicultura), uma empresa de reciclagem de resíduos sólidos e uma empresa de energia limpa. Uma indústria com histórico de sucesso na promoção de tecnologias hoje essenciais para o dia a dia da sociedade, habituada a financiar projetos nas áreas de internet, software, tecnologia da informação (TI), telecomunicação e saúde, agora, mostra-se cada vez mais interessada em financiar projetos que endereçam a problemática das mudanças climáticas. Principalmente projetos que abordam os temas mais sensíveis às questões climáticas como geração de energia, agricultura, água, resíduos, eficiência energética e industrial. Os estudos de caso e as entrevistas tornam evidentes diversas particularidades do investimento em Cleantech. Trata-se de projetos intensivos em capital e, em alguns casos, com longos períodos de maturação. São altamente dependentes de políticas públicas que regulamentem e incentivem sua adoção, não só nos estágios iniciais de desenvolvimento, mas também favorecendo seu ganho de escala. Não podem ser empregados em qualquer localização pois dependem da vocação geográfica da localidade onde serão instalados. Em muitos casos, apresentam custos iniciais superiores às tecnologias vigentes relacionados principalmente ao estágio tecnológico em que se encontram e à curva de aprendizado. Conclui que tais particularidades não limitam o interesse da indústria de PE/VC, pelo contrário, muitas delas favorecem o investimento de capital de risco na medida em que reduzem determinados riscos do investimento.
