Film Narrative Exploration Based on Social Network Analysis of Characters

Yu, Meng Chih Unknown Date (has links)
With the progress of entertainment industry, and the advances of digital video analysis and storage technologies, users can utilize the indexes of the DVD chapters for quick access, retrieval and browsing of movie content. Therefore, development of automatic movie content analysis is important. In this thesis, we focus on the romance and relationship movies, which contain the narrative of the relation between peoples. We propose a novel method for film narrative exploration based on social network analysis of characters. There are four steps. First, we perform movie scene change detection to segment a movie into scenes. In the second step, we extract the characters as the feature model of scenes by utilizing the face recognition system. Then, we measure the weight value of the characters by the centrality of social network analysis. Finally, we calculate the cosine similarity between scenes, and segment a movie into story units by using sequential clustering algorithm. We conduct experiments on four romance and relationship movies. Experimental result show that our proposed story unit segmentation method based on social network analysis of characters achieves from 63% to 94% accuracy.

A Case Study of Narrative Structure in EFL Stories of Taiwanese College English Majors /

Lin,Wen-hsuan Unknown Date (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the story-writing performance of college English majors in Taiwan in terms of narrative structure. A total of twenty stories composed by twenty junior English majors of one national university were analyzed based on the conventional English story structure. The collected stories were part of the students’ normal school work rather than specially designed tasks. Through a narrative structure analysis of the collected data, different structural patterns were discovered, including (1) Description, (2) Abbreviated Story, (3) Complete Story, (4) Lengthened Story, and (5) Complex Story. The structural uses not only reflect the learners’ writing styles but also represent their strengths and weaknesses in writing. Overall, the results show that although these students have possessed the basic knowledge of the structural conventions, they still need instruction in terms of content, editing, genre-distinction, or formal devices to enhance their story-writing skills. In addition, cultural characteristics were discovered in the writings. The preferences observed coincide with the characteristics of narrative writings of Bhutanese, Vietnamese, and Thai cultures in many ways. Therefore, the findings of this study may also serve as evidence for the great similarities that existed among Asian cultures.

Exploring the narrative structure of internet news

Chen, Ya Hui Unknown Date (has links)

DVD-ROM資料庫之敘事結構、觀點轉換分析:以迷城計劃「Bleeding Through Layers of Los Angeles:1920-1986」作品為例 / Structure and P.O.V in DVD-ROM database narratives:analyzing "Bleeding through layers of Los Angeles:1920-1986"

Liu,Chia Hui Unknown Date (has links)
Fiction performs through text. Photography performs through images. Movie performs with video; with the help of montage, video has meanings. All of them are traditional narratives, and digital narrative contains all of the above. How does digital narrative work these out? This research aims to discuss “the database narratives”. As a type of digital narrative, how does database narrative completely dismantle the traditional narrative elements into a digital format? By analyzing the reference documents, we could find the relation between theories of the traditional narrative and digital narrative. Through the selected piece of work “Bleeding Through Layers of Los Angeles:1920-1986”, this research focuses on "narrative structure," and "point of view," trying to understand the way of storytelling in digital times. This research concludes with the following: 1. Open narrative structure renders a text more interpretations. 2. Inter-textuality enhances the scale of narrative to the most. 3. Interactive narrative enables readers more interactions with the text.
