The Rhythm of Mandarin Finger Rhymes: A Corpus-based Study

Huang,Ting Unknown Date (has links)
This thesis takes great efforts in the topics about rhythm, stress and prosodic structures of the finger movements in Mandarin finger rhymes. This research established a corpus with a total of 4172 lines, each of which is coded with word categories, syntax tree, simplified tree, the number of syllables, the number of demibeats, and the stress. First of all, the masculine rhythm is the most common in the corpus. The beat-sharing, the strategy to obtain the masculine rhythm, is largely found in the F categories and the immediate constituents. The metrical template is also needed to yield the different rhythm types. Second, stress plays an important role in Maindarin Chinese. The judgement of the metricality strictly follows the metrical positions on which a stress maximum falls. The emphasis is finally put to the finger movements. The finger movements are respectively designed for the children who are 0-2, 2-4 and 4-6 years old, with the different developments in the cognition and physiology. When young children recite a metrical line, the speech rate is not as fast as other elder children and the finger movements are simple and subtle. The prosodic domains of the movements are defined from the perspective of IPs, and each IP is a sense unit (Selkirk 1984). Optimality Theory (Prince and Smolensky 1993, 2004) further covers these three research issues. The rhythm variations are vivid with the constraint re-rankings in terms of the metrics grammar and the floating constraints.

Gestural Beats in Chinese Narrative Discourse

Hsieh, Ya Huei Unknown Date (has links)
This thesis investigates gestural beats in Chinese narrative discourse at both pragmatic and acoustic levels. The relationship among grounding, information state and beat gestures is examined at the pragmatic level, and at the acoustic level, the relationship among pitch, intensity, and gestural beats is analyzed. Moreover, whether there is a rhythmic pattern for beat gestures is further studied. The subjects were four undergraduates who were asked to view an animated color cartoon episode and then to immediately recount the events in it to a listener. The subjects were audio-video taped. They were not informed of the particular interest of the study. 291 beats were transcribed and analyzed. The audio data was analyzed on Praat and a Kay’s Model 4100. The continuous beats were further analyzed to investigate the rhythmic patterns and were annotated in Anvil, a video annotation tool. Gestural beats, narrative data, and the annotations were statistically analyzed and five phenomena for beat gestures were explored. First, gestural beats can appear in both foregrounded and backgrounded clauses. Second, the occurrence of beat gestures signals shifts between levels of the narrative structure. Third, speakers usually incline to utter new information in foregrounded clauses in Chinese narrative discourse with accompanying beats. Fourth, neither intensity nor pitch changes can predict and correlate with the occurrence of gestural beats in the relationship between beats and two acoustic factors. However, when grounding and the information state of the associated referents are considered, beats are produced for new information in foregrounded clauses with greater intensity. Finally, there is a rhythmic pattern in the production of continuous beats and the regularity of the patterns correlates with the clause boundary. A close relationship is revealed between speech and gestures in this thesis. The findings provide some linguistic details that may help explore the performance of gestural beats and speech in Chinese narrative discourse.

The Relationship between Sleep Pattern and Academic Performance in Senior High School Students

Chou, Shu Ling Unknown Date (has links)
The purposes of this study are to explore the relationship of the sleep pattern with academic performance, day time sleepiness and sleep quality in senior high school students. Data were collected by sleep pattern questionnaire of the adolescent. The participants included 1650 students form the 10th grade to 12th grade, recruited form senior high schools in Taipei. Using stratified cluster sampling method. There were 1308 of valid questionnaires obtained. The major results are as follow: (1) The variablity of the sleep-wake pattern between weekdays and weekends has significant influences on academic performace in the evening type students. (2) The variablity of the sleep-wake pattern during weekdays showed significant influences on academic performace in the morening type students. (3) In both the high and low achievement motivation groups, sleep pattern showed no significant associations with academic performance. (4) The mediation effect of daytime sleepiness and sleep quality were not proven in all the data analyses. In coclusion, the results indicate that in evening type students, maintaining regularity of sleep pattern between weekdays and weekends would be beneficial to their academic performance; and in the morning type students, keeping regular weekday sleep-wake schedules seem to be more important for better academic performance. Therefore, when considering the influences on academic performance, regularity of sleep seem to be more important than quantity of sleep in high schoolers.
