Burnout and Psychological Wellbeing among Taiwanese and American Graduate Students in Mental Health Services: Role of Adult Attachment, Emotion Regulation, and Self-Compassion

Graduate students in mental health service training programs are at risk of experiencing burnout. Using adult attachment theory as the guiding framework, this study examined a conceptual model which depicted the direct and indirect effect of attachment insecurity on burnout and the subsequent psychological distress via low self-compassion and emotion regulation difficulty with two cultural samples recruited from the U.S. and Taiwan, respectively. The final sample included 216 U.S. mental health graduate trainees and 201 Taiwanese trainees. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data. Findings from the final models best supported by the data revealed that in both cultural groups, attachment anxiety contributed to lower self-compassion which subsequently resulted in greater burnout and that emotion regulation did not play a mediational role in the models. Results also demonstrated cultural differences in several paths of the research model. For the U.S. sample, only higher attachment anxiety indirectly contributed to more psychological distress through low self-compassion and burnout was best positioned as an outcome variable similar to psychological distress, instead of being a mediator. For the Taiwanese sample, on the other hand, both attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance demonstrated significant indirect effects on higher psychological distress through lower self-compassion and burnout was a 2nd tired mediator through which attachment anxiety indirectly contributed to higher psychological distress. These findings advanced our understanding of the role of adult attachment insecurity in the development of burnout and psychological distress for graduate trainees in mental health fields, as well as the possible cultural differences in the observed variables and their relations. Counseling implications, limitations, and future research directions were discussed.

Adult Attachment, Racial-Ethnic Identity, Racial-Ethnic Socialization, and Subjective Wellbeing

The current study aimed to explore the direct effect of insecure adult attachment on subjective wellbeing and its indirect effect via racial-ethnic identity. Additionally, the present study examined the extent to which racial-ethnic socialization practices may moderate adult attachment and racial-ethnic identity link. The final sample included 213 emerging adults (M = 20.94; SD = 2.96) with diverse racial-ethnic backgrounds. PROCESS Model 4 and 1 were used to examine the direct and indirect effect of insecure attachment on subjective wellbeing via racial-ethnic identity variables and the interaction effect between insecure attachment and racial-ethnic socialization on racial-ethnic identity variables. Results indicated the direct effect of insecure attachment on subjective wellbeing but did not support hypotheses for the indirect effect of insecure attachment on subjective wellbeing via the racial-ethnic identity variables. Additionally, results indicated that overt socialization buffered the negative impact of attachment avoidance on racial-ethnic identity exploration. Furthermore, racial-ethnic identity variables and subjective wellbeing significantly differed across racial-ethnic groups and socioeconomic statuses. Findings provide insight on the distinct concepts of attachment and racial-ethnic identity as they highlight inter- and intra-personal components, respectively. Mental health professionals may utilize overt socialization to help clients develop a sense of purpose and meaning related to their identity. Limitations, future research directions, and counseling implications are discussed.

This study aims to analyze young adults born, raised, and currently living in the county of Jämtland in northern Sweden. The study explores the phenomenon of youth choosing to remain in the county, either in the city or in the smaller surrounding towns. Through a qualitative approach, employing semi- structured interviews, the factors, and motivations behind their decision to stay is investigated. The study reveals the complex dynamics of place attachment and place identity through a youth perspective. In addition, the study highlights several key themes, including youths’ perceptions of their hometowns, their sense of having actively chosen to stay, and the reception they have received from their surroundings, regarding their decision to remain locally anchored. The results reveal a complex interplay of individual-, social- and structural factors influencing young people’s choices to remain in Jämtland. It also testifies to a notable difference between the two groups where the place itself seems to have an impact on the sense of place, anchoring and identity. The study challenges preconceived notions behind immobility and the choice to remain, in order to better understand the phenomena trough a youth perspective.

Design and Testing of a Quick-Connect Wheelchair Power Add-On Unit

A quick-connect wheelchair power add-on unit (PAU) has been developed at the Human Factors Engineering Center of Virginia Tech. The objective of the new invention is to provide an inexpensive, highly portable product which can quickly convert a manual wheelchair into a power-operated wheelchair. This dissertation details the three year research and design effort to develop the new wheelchair PAU. Results are presented from a series of evaluations conducted to identify performance and user-interaction characteristics of the PAU. Interpretation of the results provides a prioritized list of identified design deficiencies along with wheelchair expert and design team suggestions for the next generation of design alterations. The three evaluations conducted with the second generation PAU prototype include a series of wheelchair expert interviews, a PAU performance evaluation, and a usability evaluation which utilized wheelchair operators as subjects. Also included in the dissertation is an explanation of the need for a new PAU, a description of the most recent design iteration, a literature review containing information about the history of wheelchairs, the condition of the current PAU market, and an analysis of wheelchair PAU consumers. The new invention was conceived and patented by Dr. John G. Casali of the Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) Department at Virginia Tech. Physical Encapsulation of Interface Bilayers

This dissertation presents the development of a new form of biomolecular material system which features interface lipid bilayers capable of hosting a wide variety of natural and engineered proteins. This research builds on the droplet interface bilayer (DIB) platform which first demonstrated that, through self-assembly, lipid-encased water droplets submersed in oil can be physically connected to form a liquid-supported lipid bilayer at the droplet interface. Key advantages of the DIB method over previous bilayer formation techniques include the lack of a supporting substrate which simplifies bilayer formation and the ability to connect many droplets to form `cell-inspired' networks which can provide a collective utility based on the compositions and arrangement of the droplets. The research present herein specifically seeks to overcome three limitations of the original droplet interface bilayer: limited portability due to lack of droplet support, the use of externally supported electrodes to electrically probe the network, and the requirement that in order to form DIB networks, aqueous volumes must be individually dispensed and arranged. The approach presented in this document is to provide increased interactions between the contained liquid phases and a supporting substrate in order to achieve both increased usability through refined methods of packaging and in situ interface formation which eliminates the need to create individual droplets. Physical encapsulation is defined as the the use of a solid substrate to contain both liquid phases such that the aqueous volumes are physically supported on one length scale (10-1000µm) while not inhibiting the self-assembly of phospholipids at the oil/water interface occurring on a much smaller length scale (1-10nm). Physically-encapsulated droplet interface bilayers are achieved by connecting lipid-encased droplets within a substrate that tightly confines the positions of neighboring droplets. A term called the packing factor is introduced to quantify the ratio of the aqueous volumes per the total compartment volume. Physically-encapsulated droplet interface bilayers formed in high packing factor substrate (30%) that also features integrated electrodes demonstrate all of the properties that unencapsulated DIBs exhibit (electrical resistances greater than 1GΩ, failure potentials between |200-300|mV, and the ability to host transmembrane proteins) but these confined assemblies can be moved, shaken, and even completely inverted. Additionally, a structured experiment to quantify the durability of interface bilayers shows that encapsulated and unencapsulated droplet interface bilayers can both survive 3-7g of lateral acceleration prior to bilayer failure, but have different modes of failure. Encapsulated DIBs tend to rupture, while unencapsulated DIBs completely separate. Physical encapsulation is also shown to permit the in situ formation of durable interface bilayers when the substrate is made from a flexible material. The importance of this approach stems from the fact that, by using the substrate to locally partition a single aqueous volume into multiple volumes, there is no need to arrange individual droplets. This method of bilayer formation is termed the regulated attachment method (RAM), since the separation and subsequent reattachment of the aqueous volumes is regulated by the opening and closing of an aperture within the flexible substrate. In this dissertation, a mechanical force is used to directly modulate the aperture dimension for controlling both the initial formation and final size of the interface. With the demonstrated advantages of portability and controlled attachment offered by physical encapsulation, encapsulated lipid bilayers are formed within a completely sealed flexible substrate. A key aspect of this final work is to demonstrate that both the organic and aqueous phases can be stabilized internally, creating a complete material system that features tailorable interface bilayers. / Ph. Factors contributing to the long-term adjustment of college women abused as children

The current study examines psychological correlates of childhood maltreatment, including adult attachment, attributional style, perceived family environment, and current social support and demonstrates their main effects and interactions for predicting long-term psychological distress. Further, this study expands upon past research by broadly defining childhood maltreatment to include sexual, physical, and psychological aspects of maltreatment. This perspective enables the examination of abuse main effects as well as the interactional effect of the various types of abuse. Three hundred and twenty college women completed the Family Experiences Survey, Conflict Tactics Scale, Childhood Maltreatment Interview - Revised, Social Support Questionnaire, Insecure Attachment Inventory, Bell Object Relations Reality Testing Inventory, Mental Health Inventory, and Brief Symptom Inventory. One hundred and twenty eight women reported a history of maltreatment. / Ph. D.

The impact of school and parent attachment on rural adolescents' age at first intercourse: A comparison of contexts

This cross-sectional survey study investigates the relationship between school attachment (SA) and adolescents' age at first intercourse (DV), as well as the influence of SA on DV in comparison to the influences of parent attachment (PA), other parent and school factors, and individual factors. Early first intercourse is defined as prior to age 15. Participants are 1,757 mostly African-American and White 7th through 12th grade adolescent boys and girls in five rural counties of a Mid-Atlantic state. Bivariate correlations comparing SA and PA revealed significant and positive correlations between SA and DV (p<.001), as well as PA and DV (p<.001). Linear regressions including only SA and PA showed SA was most predictive of DV for adolescents reporting the lowest (p<.05) and highest (p<.001) levels of PA. For those reporting moderate attachment to parents, SA was not predictive of DV. Several ethnic and gender differences are discussed. Finally, when the influence of individual, parent, and school contexts was compared using entry in a regression by blocks, SA was no longer a significant predictor of DV, and school variables did not account for a significant portion in the variance of age at first intercourse. Parent attachment was a significant and negative predictor, indicating that other parent, individual, and community variables are more influential. Implications are discussed. / Master of Science

Development of a Novel Single-Cell Attachment and Spreading Platform Utilizing Fused-Fiber Nanonets

Initial attachment to the extracellular matrix (ECM) and consequent spreading is a necessary process in the cell cycle of which little is known. Cell spreading has been well-recognized in 2D systems, however, the native fibrous ECM presents cells with 3D biophysical cues. Thus, using suspended fibers as model systems, we present the development of a novel platform (Cell-STEPs) capable of capturing cell attachment dynamics and forces from the moment a cell in suspension contacts the fiber. Cell-STEPs comprises of a custom glass-bottom petri dish with a lid to deliver a constant supply of CO2 to maintain pH. Fibrous scaffolds are attached in the dish to allow cellular investigations over extended periods of time. We find that cell-fiber attachment occurs in three progressive phases: initial attachment of cell to fiber (phase 0), rapid drop in circularity (phase 1), and increase in cell spread area (phase 2). Furthermore, using iterative inverse methods, forces involved in cell spreading through deflection of fibers were estimated. Our findings provide new insights in attachment biomechanics, including initial sensing and latching of cell to fiber with a negligible or protrusive force, followed by rapid loss in circularity through protrusion sensing at nearly constant spread area and minimal force generation, transitioning to a final phase of increased contractile forces until spread area and force saturation is observed. Also, anisotropic spreading of cells on single and two-fibers are closely related, while cells attached to several fibers take longer and spread isotropically. The Cell-STEPs platform allows, for the first time, detailed interrogations in the discrete and orchestrated adhesion steps involved in cell-fibrous matrix recognition and attachment along with simultaneous measurements of forces involved in cell attachment. / Master of Science

Characterization Study of Plasma Spray Attachment of Intrinsic Fabry-Perot Interferometric Sensors in Power Generation Applications

The purpose of this study is to characterize the plasma spray deposits used for attaching intrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometric fiber optic strain sensors. The deposits must maintain adhesion at elevated temperatures without distorting the sensors' signals. Two different material systems were tested and modeled, a nickel based alloy and yttria-stabilized zirconia. The material properties of the deposits and the thermal stresses in the system were evaluated to determine attachment lifetime of the sensors. The encapsulated sensors' signals were collected before and after plasma spraying and at elevated temperatures. The material properties of the deposits were evaluated by electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, scratch testing, thermal fatigue testing, and nanoindentation. The thermal stresses were evaluated by Raman spectroscopy and from finite element analysis in COMSOL® Multiphysics®. Several of the sensors broke during encapsulation due to the plasma spray processing conditions and the signals experienced distortion at elevated temperatures. The sensors can be treated to remove this interference to allow for this deposit attachment. The nickel based alloy's ductility and lamellar microstructure allowed for non catastrophic relaxation mechanisms to relieve induced thermal stresses. The yttria stabilized zirconia failed catastrophically at elevated temperatures due its lack of compliance to mismatches in thermal expansion. A high melting point metallic deposit, similar to the nickel based alloy, is desirable for fiber optic sensor attachment due to its ductility, thermal expansion, and dominant relaxation mechanisms. The processing conditions may need to be optimized to allow for the sensors' protection during encapsulation. / Master of Science

The purpose of this study is to explain how supporters affect a team's brandmanagement. The theories and earlier research looked upon in this study areconnected to brand management, brand image, brand personality and theattachment theory. This study is interesting due to the fact that the sportsindustry is unique in comparison to other industries. In sports the customersare supporters that other industries do not have. A limited amount of researchabout supporters has been done, and they have not been clearly defined. Thisstudy used a qualitative research method and collected data from semistructured interviews with six different teams in the SHL. A thematic analysiswas performed to analyze and summarize the data. The summarized data wasthen compared and connected to our theoretical framework in order to try andanswer the purpose and research questions of the study. The managerialimplication of the study was that it showed that team managers in the SHLcommunicate through social media, events, and more, in order to have aconstant dialogue with supporters. The main theoretical contribution is thatsupporters can be connected to the attachment theory, and that brandmanagement in the sport industry might be defined along a B2S, “Business-toSupporter” perspective.
