Text in Afrikaans / Summaries in English and Afrikaans / In an exploratory study variables influencing the intention to use contraceptives and contraceptive use of teenagers and the association between these variables were determined.A random quota sample consisting of 231 and 224 school boys and girls (14 - 18 years) were selected and the final investigating group were 315 sexually active teenagers. According to loglinear analyses the following variables showed a significant relationship with the intention to use contraceptives: attitudes towards the use of contraceptives, perceptions of accessibility and locus of control. Variables that showed a significant relationship with actual contraceptive use were gender, knowledge about reproduction and contraceptives, beliefs and attitudes towards the use of contraceptives, traditional values such as proving fertility before marriage and family size, perceptions of social approval of contraceptive use as well as perceptions of accessibility to contraceptives. An important conclusion was that an urgent need exists for effective sex education programmes and better access to contraceptives. / In 'n verkennende veldstudie is faktore wat verband hou met swart tienderjariges se intensie om kontraseptiewes te gebruik en werklike kontraseptiewe gebruik ge'identifiseer en die verhoudings tussen die faktore is bepaal. Text in Afrikaans / It is alarming that psychologists are in many cases insufficiently trained with regard to homosexuality. Against this background and on the basis of a literature study and empirical research, this study aims to provide guidelines to educational psychologists on working with homosexual clients. Within the Educational Psychology, a person's self actualisation rests on three pilars, namely experience, meaning assignation and involvement. The premise of the qualitative research (focus group interviews) used in this study is homosexual persons' experience of psychologists - the investigation was therefore approached from an Educational Psychology viewpoint. Altogether 75% of the focus group respondents' experience of psychologists was negative. The possibility exists that insufficient training may cause insufficient knowledge and insight, which in turn may lead to homosexual persons' negative experiences of psychologists. It is therefore imperative that the aspect of training of psychologists with regard to homosexuality will receive attention. / Educational Studies / M.Ed.

Lesbian, gay and bisexual client's experience of psychotherapy and counselling; the search for LGBTI-affirmative practiceVictor, Cornelius Johannes 01 April 2014 (has links)
Despite legal and policy advancements in South Africa, prejudice, discrimination and
victimisation are still a reality for many lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people in the
country. The Psychological Society of South Africa (PsySSA) has embarked on a process to
develop lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) affirmative practice
guidelines for psychology professionals, when working with these client populations. As a
part of the larger objective, this research study highlights LGB people’s experiences of
psychotherapy and counselling in South Africa as possible inputs for the mentioned practice
guidelines. Qualitative in-depth interviews were conducted with selected participants. The
results indicate that some aspects of LGB people’s experiences are similar to those of anyone
in psychotherapy or counselling, but also that there are distinct differences. Negative
experiences were almost exclusively due to the counsellor being disaffirming of the client's
sexual orientation. Self-acceptance and the development of alternative perspectives of
sexuality were more prominent outcomes of counselling compared to studies among broader
populations. The participants’ feedback on a list of affirmative statements provides a
