Late Seventeenth-Century Italian Trumpet Concertos of the Bologna School: a Lecture Recital; Together with Three Other Recitals

Jackson, David L., 1944- 08 1900 (has links)
The lecture was given on March 3, 1974. The discussion of the Bolognese trumpet works consisted of an exploration of the local agencies that nurtured the compositional activity centered around San Petronio, biographical details of the principal composers, and stylistic and formal analyses of the works that were performed. Selections were performed from the early, middle, and late segments of the period, represented by the composers Maurizio Cazzati, Petronio Franceschini, and Giuseppe Torelli. In addition to the lecture recital three other public recitals were given. Two of these consisted primarily of solo literature for the trumpet, and the third featured chamber music with trumpet. The first solo recital was presented on July 31, 1972, and included works of Tommaso Albinoni, G. Ph. Telemann, Thérèse Brenet, and Wayne Bohrnstedt. The second solo recital, on July 22, 1974, featured French music of this century. Compositions by Ravel, Fauré,Varèse, Henri Tomasi, Pierre-Max Dubois, Benno Ammann, and Théo Charlier were presented. The chamber music recital displayed the trumpet in combination with other solo instruments and voice, together with varied accompaniments. A group of three arias for soprano and trumpet--by Purcell, Handel, and Bach--and a suite of arias for oboe and trumpet by Telemann were representative of the 18th century. These works were performed with an accompaniment of strings and basso continuo. Works from the 20th century included the combination of trumpet, clarinet, and xylophone, with percussion accompaniment, in a piece by Carlos Surinach and trumpet with pre-recorded tape in a work by David Cope. The program was presented on February 26, 1973. All of the recitals were recorded on magnetic tape and are filed, along with the written version of the lecture material, as a part of the dissertation.

Špitál sv. Alžběty na Pohořelci. Dochované oltářní obrazy ze špitální kaple. / Saint Elizabeth's spital in Pohořelec. The extant altarpieces of the spital's chapel.

Lorencová, Veronika January 2017 (has links)
Saint Elizabeth's spital in Pohořelec The extant altarpieces of the spital's chapel Abstract This thesis deals with the Saint Elizabeth's spital in Pohořelec near the monastery of Premonstratensians in Strahov. This spital was founded by the abbot Kaspar Questenberg and was located in the western part of Pohořelec. However, the original building wasn't preserved, because it had to yield to Prague's fortification in the 60's of the 17th century. Under the abbot Vincenc Makarius Frank the new spital was constructed. There was the chapel dedicated to the patron St. Elisabeth, which was mentioned in the written sources since the beginning of the hospital existence. During few years there were also ordered altarpieces. The contemporary literature associates only two paintings of saints with Saint Elizabeth's spital (St. Barbara and St. Rosalia). These paintings were placed on the side altars of the chapel and today are in the possession of the Royal Canonry of Premonstratensians at Strahov. Thanks to the preserved written sources, we were able to discover additional information of the spital's equipment and the chapel main altarpiece. This thesis summarizes the previous research and determines templates of altarpieces and their sources of inspiration. The attention is also aimed to the history of the spital,...

Každodennost v raném novověku z pohledu Zuzany Černínové / Everyday life in the early modern culture from the perspective of Zuzana Černínová

Benešová, Kateřina January 2017 (has links)
In my diploma thesis, I will deal with the life of Zuzana Černínová, Czech noblewoman, wife of Jan Černín from Chudenice and mother of Humprecht Jan Černín. My aim will be to approach everyday life in the early modern culture, particularly in period of Bílá hora, through Zuzana Černínová, and her numerous correspondence with her son, which has been largely preserved and was published by František Dvorský and Zdeněk Kalista. From the comprehensive correspondence, I set apart the main topics that have become the base of my thesis. I will divide my thesis into two parts. In the first part I will deal with the definition of the term "everyday life" and here I will interpret all important life events such as birth, marriage, death and funeral, where I will focus closely on Zuzana Černínová and her family. In relation to these life events I will also include the widow's dowry and the legal requirements associated with it or the influence of illnesses on contemporary society. In the second part of my research, I will focus on the person of Zuzana Černínová. I am going to analyze her position of the noblewoman which changed before and after the death of her husband, the rights she acquired after the death of her husband and her situation. It also includes the different position of the noblewoman-widow when...

Dieu, le monde et l’homme : Une analyse sur la liberté d’action et la conscience chez quelques personnages du XVIIe siècle / An analysis of free will and conscience in some 17th century characters

Chiche, Sarah January 2020 (has links)
Corneille and Racine are two emblematic authors of the 17th century classic tragedy. It features characters of high rank from the nobility and/or from royal blood. The aim of this thesis is an analysis and a reflection, through female and male characters on a corpus of four of their works, in the field of free will and consciousness. These characters represent the tragic hero, coming from the aristocracy and/or of royal blood. Our choice is for Corneille, Polyeucte and Le Cid and for Racine, it is Andromaque and Britannicus. The method is based mainly on Goldmann’s book Le dieu caché and mainly the concept of three spheres: of the divine, the world and mankind. The analysis is focused on the protagonists’ ability to use free will, to make use of the will and on the notion of consciousness. The complexity of this study has been in the complexity of the characters and in the coexistence of the three spheres of the divine, of the world and of mankind, in which there are various subtleties especially since the spheres interact between them.By the same ways, it is complex to measure the will, free will of the characters. Through the studied tragedies, we can see the central place of women, the difference between man and woman in the matter of their free will, the place of emotions in characters.

Scripture for America: Scriptural Interpretation in John Locke's Paraphrase

Kearns, Kevin M. 08 1900 (has links)
Is John Locke a philosopher or theologian? When considering Locke's religious thought, scholars seldom point to his Paraphrase and Notes on the Epistles of St. Paul. This is puzzling since the Paraphrase is his most extensive treatment of Christian theology. Since this is the final work of his life, did Locke undergo a deathbed conversion? The scholarship that has considered the Paraphrase often finds Locke contradicting himself on various theological doctrines. In this dissertation, I find that Locke not only remains consistent with his other writings, but provides his subtlest interpretation of Scripture. He is intentionally subtle in order to persuade a Protestant audience to modern liberalism. This is intended to make Protestantism, and specifically Calvinism, the vehicle for modern liberalism. This is seen clearly in Max Weber's The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism. Though Weber concludes that Protestant support for capitalism in the late 19th Century is due to its theological foundation, I find that Weber is actually examining Lockean Protestantism. Locke's success in transforming Protestantism is also useful today in showing how a modern liberal can converse with someone who actively opposes, and may even wish to harm, modern liberalism. The dissertation analyzes four important Protestant doctrines: Faith Alone, Scripture Alone, the church and family, and Christian political life.

Konkordance písňového repertoáru konvolutu CZ-Ps, DA III 17 v pramenech 15. - 17. století / Concordances of Song Part of a Convolut CZ-Ps, DA III 17 within the Sources from 15th to 17th Centuries

Hrábek, Šimon January 2022 (has links)
The following thesis is basically an edition of one particular part of the Strahov convolute CZ- Pst, Ms. DA III 17 called the "song section". Majority of its repertoire are songs, yet it isn't standard monothematic section, but rather collection of various relics. The other crucial aspect of the following thesis is the table of concordances and it also contains several chapters focused on the DA III 17 manuscript itself and on three particular pieces: cantiones Pulcherrima rosa, Jesus Christus dum cernitur and trophus Alle- Domina, flos virginalis as well. Other remaining compositions are also shortly commented. The main goal of the thesis is to open up this repertoire for wider spectrum of reaserchers and musicians. And last but not least to add some new informations about this still insufficiently processed musical material.
