Jefferson's Leap of Faith: the Embargo Acts of 1807-1809 as a Failure of Jeffersonian Ideology

Hamilton, James M. (James Milburn) 12 1900 (has links)
Thomas Jefferson's political ideology centered on the importance of individual liberty and choice for the common person. Activities throughout his career were grounded on this concept. It is interesting, therefore, that events during the final years of his presidency appear to have prompted him to abandon this philosophy in favor of a more pragmatic, less democratic, approach. The embargo acts which Congress passed at Jefferson's request in between December 1807 and January 1809 outlawed all foreign commercial activities and provided harsh penalties for violations. The president's failure to communicate publicly the reasons he believed these drastic measures were required stand in stark contrast to his political philosophy and left a cloud over his presidency when he left office.

Gladstone and the Bank of England: A Study in Mid-Victorian Finance, 1833-1866

Caernarven-Smith, Patricia 05 1900 (has links)
The topic of this thesis is the confrontations between William Gladstone and the Bank of England. These confrontations have remained a mystery to authors who noted them, but have generally been ignored by others. This thesis demonstrates that Gladstone's measures taken against the Bank were reasonable, intelligent, and important for the development of nineteenth-century British government finance. To accomplish this task, this thesis refutes the opinions of three twentieth-century authors who have claimed that many of Gladstone's measures, as well as his reading, were irrational, ridiculous, and impolitic. My primary sources include the Gladstone Diaries, with special attention to a little-used source, Volume 14, the indexes to the Diaries. The day-to-day Diaries and the indexes show how much Gladstone read about financial matters, and suggest that his actions were based to a large extent upon his reading. In addition, I have used Hansard's Parliamentary Debates and nineteenth-century periodicals and books on banking and finance to understand the political and economic debates of the time.

However, in such book he did not deal with man. He had dealt with this subject in two books which were published later: The expression of emotions in man and animals (1872) and The descent of man (1871). This dissertation aims to elucidate if Darwin had presented the same ways of modification of the species in The origin of species and The expression of emotions in man and animals. It will be also taken into account some conceptions presented by him in The descent of man. This study contains an introduction and three chapters. Chapter 1 deals with some of Darwin s contributions offering an overview of the main ways of modification found in the Origin of species. Chapter 2 analyses the ways of modification of species found in The expression of emotions in man and animals. Chapter 3 offers a comparison between the conceptions found in both books as well as providing some final remarks on the subject. This study led to the conclusion that the ways of modification of species proposed in both books are the same: natural selection, sexual selection, inheritance of acquired characteristics. Besides that, it may be found an analogy between natural and artificial selection in both of them. However, in The expression of emotions in man and animals Darwin stressed the role of the inheritance of acquired characteristics in order to explain some patterns of behaviour in man and other animals. It can also be pointed out that several conceptions found in The Expression had inspired some more recent works contributing for the building of the discipline Ethology, in the 1960 s / Dentre os livros escritos por Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882), o Origem das espécies (1859) é o mais conhecido.

Wandekarla Bônia de Araújo 21 May 2008 (has links)
This dissertation attempts to be a deep look at the particular universe of the adolescents from secondary schools and young university students, catching a glimpse in a dialogue and systematic approach with themselves and the church, and the church with the adolescents and juvenile people disenchanted with the institutional sacred and, therefore, living a religious crisis. Our proposal is, above all, to provide a broad knowledge of the factors which unleashing factors of this crisis in the presence of the sacred and the identification of clues to one new juvenile spirituality, in the mystic of Paula Frassinetti. The studies about adolescence and the youth in general, report and characterize this crossing to the maturity as something very important in the formation of the adolescent and juvenile psycho-religious identities mainly when we treat of the juvenile crisis in the presence of the institutional sacred. The partial results, acquired along the work with adolescents (São José School, CECOSNE) and the university students (FAFIRE) and through the field investigation, are attempts of an approach with this public, making them aware of psycho-religious and spiritual experiences present in this phase of life. The research showed, on one hand, a confusing youth in some points related to the spirituality and religious presence. On the other hand, we could observe a unique spiritual experience in the way the young people think; this experience lived by wishes, affection, happiness, sympathy, and the avoidance of everything which was dogma, rules and acts without no sense in their lives in constant change. The crossing of an adolescent spirituality and juvenile heterogeneous to one more autonomous is well-characterized in the field search, but we can notice that the adolescent crisis is more vivid than the juvenile in the presence of the institutional sacred without having, nevertheless, the essential loss of juvenile spirituality which is more centered in front of the Other (God) than the religious institution. At last, with this study, we intend to contribute methodologically with techniques and resources which could be used to re-enchant the sacred to the juvenile universe, providing the protagonist of a new spirituality according Saint Paula Frassinetti

Além disso, procuro compreender como as discussões e polêmicas geradas como resultado destas conferências serviram para preparar um determinado público, em 1881, para ler o romance O mulato, de Aluísio Azevedo, e identificar as referências darwinistas existentes nele / Abstract: This dissertation analyses the Popular Conferences of Gloria [Conferências Populares da Glória], emphasizing the debate produced in the press about their speeches that had the Darwinism as subject, between 1873 and 1880. The Conferences had begun in 1873, and had the purpose to publicize a scientific knowledge among the erudite groups of Rio de Janeiro. The approached theme during these meetings was centered on cultural and scientific matters, and among these I emphasize the Darwinism, because it was the subject that caused great controversy on the press between who was adept and who was adverse of this theory. Moreover, I intend to understand how the discussions and controversies produced as results of these conferences served to prepare a specific audience to read, in 1881, the novel called O Mulato, written by Aluisio Azevedo, and to identify his Darwinists references on it / Mestrado / Politica, Memoria e Cidade / Mestre em História

A Comparative Analysis of Haydn's Horn Concerto and Trumpet Concerto

Adamson, Daniel 08 1900 (has links)
Among the existing solo instrumental concertos of Joseph Haydn's oeuvre are two concertos for brass instruments. These are the Horn Concerto in D Major (Hob. VIId: 3) and Trumpet Concerto in E-flat Major (Hob. VIIe: 1). In addition to their standing as the only two concertos for solo brass instruments written by Haydn in existence, the two concertos provide a unique opportunity for insight into the history of the concerto genre and Haydn's change in compositional style. This is because of their chronological position within Haydn's oeuvre; the Horn Concerto was composed in 1762 during the early years of Haydn's employment with the Esterházy family and the Trumpet Concerto in 1796 as the last known concerto written by Haydn. Significant changes had occurred during that thirty four year time-span, not only in Haydn's life, but also within the field of music. This dissertation examines some of these changes and provides a comparative analysis of these two pieces. More specifically, it employs Schenkerian analysis of the voice-leading and structure of both concertos to examine the transformation in Haydn's compositional style and show the evolution of concerto form. This evolution in style between the Horn Concerto and Trumpet Concerto is most prominently marked by a loosening of compositional constraints, including freer formal procedures, instrumentation, harmonic structures, and an increase in chromaticism (aided by the new chromatic abilities of the trumpet). This document provides an in-depth comparative analysis within an often overlooked genre of music and gives insight into changes in Haydn's compositional style and the concerto genre.
