Due to the rise of modern novel, the prefaces space, also called prologue, preamble, warnings to the reader, preliminary ideas, was also used as a debate spot, where it was aimed to form the novelistic aesthetic and to add credibility to the novel. The issues were also seen in prefaces from brazilian and portuguese novelists by the time of the rise and consolidation of the novel in those coutries, in the mid-nineteenth century, these issues circulated between the two countries through the importation of books too, especially regarding the transatlantic movement Portugal-Brazil. Camilo Castelo Branco was one of the portuguese writers greatly appreciated in Brazil, and whose works are filled with prefaces, which approuch, among other aspects, the novel as a new genre surrounded by distrust. The works of Camilo formed, over time, imposing large collections in great libraries from the country, such as the collection Camiliana, located in Grêmio Literário Português, State of Pará, where many texts produced, translated and edited by the portuguese writer can be found, besides works that reference him, whose highlight is on the meaningful presence of novels, which are mostly first editions. Thus, based on the prologues of the first editions novels: Amor de perdição (1862), Estrellas funestas (1862), Annos de prosa (1863), Amor de salvação (1864), Mysterios de Fafe (1868), O retrato de Ricardina (1868), and the second edition of O romance d’um homem rico (1863), available on that collection, this work seeks to reflect on the images and opinions that the author builds and designs about the genre itself and its possible reader, in order to understand his vision of issues so commonly associated with novel, as the relationship between reality and fiction and fiction and morality, this acquaintance does not obliterate the reading and dialogue with the fictional texts themselves, which the prefaces are conditioned to. To this end, it is approached, in the two chapters that precede the analysis of prologues from Camilo, respectively: aspects concerning the rise of the novel, its acclimatization in Portugal and its cultivation by Camilo Castelo Branco; the acclimatization of the genre in Brazil, the importance of creating spaces for reading and the physical description of the collection Camilians, the corpus from the research.

The origins of an illusion: British policy and opinion, and the development of Prussian liberalism, 1848-1871

Murray, Scott W. January 1990 (has links)
The massive historiography dealing with the problem of Germany's development in the first half of twentieth century has been strongly influenced by the notion that certain peculiar national characteristics led Germany down a Sonderweq, or "special path," which diverged from that of other Western European nations. However, by helping to focus scholarly attention on various political, social and intellectual developments which took place in Germany in the nineteenth century, the Sonderweq thesis has distracted scholars from examining more closely the possible impact which the interplay of international relations had on Germany's development during this pivotal period. The present study examines the extent to which British foreign policy affected the growth of authoritarianism and the decline of liberalism in Prussia during the period 1848-1871, and how certain Intellectual currents in England at the time affected both the formulation and the expression of British policy regarding Prussia. By examining both the policies pursued by British statesmen at certain key points during the period 1848-1871, and the views expressed by a group of highly idealistic British liberal commentators who watched affairs in Prussia closely during this period, I have attempted to demonstrate the following: firstly, that existing interpretations of British policy regarding Prussia have overemphasized the role of liberal idealism in the calculations of British policy-makers, who appear instead to have consistently pursued pragmatic policies aimed at a Prussian-led unification of Germany; and secondly that it was this latter group of British commentators who provided policy-makers with a style of rhetoric which obfuscated the pragmatic considerations underlying British policy. Moreover, it was this same corpus of liberal, "Whig" commentary which laid the conceptual foundations for what was to become the standard interpretative approach to German history, particularly amongst Anglo-American historians writing since 1945 - the Sonderweq thesis. Thus, by separating the rhetoric from the actual practice of British policy, and by identifying the liberal biases which pervaded British liberal discourse on Prussia during this period, I have attempted to clarify Britain's role in the important developments taking place in Germany at this time, while broadening our appreciation of how and why subsequent scholarship on the German question has so readily embraced the notion that German history is "peculiar". / Arts, Faculty of / History, Department of / Graduate

The Politics of Expansion: Texas as an Issue in National Politics, 1819-1845

Saxon, Gerald D. 05 1900 (has links)
The American movement to acquire the region known as Texas has "been the subject of countless monographs and journal articles. Although the literature on the Texas movement is voluminous, no historian has produced an interpretive synthesis based on that literature and the extant documentary sources. This work is intended "to fill that void "by offering speculative analysis as well as a chronological narrative on the total movement. The scope of this work is comprehensive. It traces the American government's handling of the Texas issue from 1819—-the year President James Monroe agreed to drop the American claim to Texas in the Adams-Onis treaty—through 1845—the year President James K. Polk signed a congressional resolution granting Texas statehood. Throughout these years the countervailing political forces of antebellum America had more influence on the government's Texas position than did diplomatic considerations. Consequently, the theme of this dissertation is that the American movement to acquire Texas was primarily a political movement. Indeed, the Texas Republic became an American state only when the annexation issue became inextricably linked with the party trammels and political philosophies of Jacksonian America.

The Old Alcalde: Oran Milo Roberts, Texas's Forgotten Fire-Eater

Yancey, William C. 05 1900 (has links)
Oran Milo Roberts was at the center of every important event in Texas between 1857 and 1883. He served on the state supreme court on three separate occasions, twice as chief justice. As president of the 1861 Secession Convention he was instrumental in leading Texas out of the Union. He then raised and commanded an infantry regiment in the Confederate Army. After the Civil War, Roberts was a delegate to the 1866 Constitutional Convention and was elected by the state legislature to the United States Senate, though Republicans in Congress refused to seat him. He served two terms as governor from 1879 to 1883. Despite being a major figure in Texas history, there are no published biographies of Roberts. This dissertation seeks to examine Roberts's place in Texas history and analyze the factors that drove him to seek power. It will also explore the major events in which he participated and determine his historical legacy to the state.

"The River Duddon" and William Wordsworth's Evolving Poetics of Collection

Stimpson, Shannon Melee 11 December 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Despite its impact in generating a more positive reception toward Wordsworth's work among his contemporaries, The River Duddon volume has received comparatively little critical attention in recent scholarship. On some level, this is unsurprising given the relative unpopularity of Wordsworth's later work among modern readers, but I believe that the relative shortage of critical scholarship on The River Duddon is due, at least in part, to a symptomatic failure to read the volume in its entirety. This essay takes up the challenge of following Wordsworth's directive to read The River Duddon volume as a unified whole. While I cannot account for every inclusion, I set out to explore how the idea of collection functions as the unifying force governing the volume's organizational and thematic structure. I argue that although the individual pieces that make up the collection are distinct from each other in their style, subject matter, and date of composition, together they constitute an exploration of the beauty of Wordsworth's native region and his interest in harmonizing aesthetic principles of variety and unity. When read as parts of a dialogical exchange rather than as self-contained units, the individual texts in The River Duddon collectively present an array of perspectives through which Wordsworth not only celebrates the rich diversity of the Lake District's local customs and landscapes, but also theorize a sophisticated poetics of collection which he hoped would help justify his poetic program and reinforce the literary and cultural weight of his future work.

Bouchard, Aline 20 June 2011 (has links) (PDF)

"Writing Empire": South Africa and the colonial fiction of Anthony Trollope

Norton-Amor, Elizabeth Anne 28 February 2004 (has links)
Postcolonial theory teaches us that the Empire was as much a textual as a physical undertaking: the Empire was (and is) experienced through its texts. Anthony Trollope was an enthusiastic traveller and helped to "write the Empire" in both his travel narratives and in his novels. This study examines his travel narrative South Africa, and explores how the colony is depicted in this work and in Trollope's "colonial" novels: Harry Heathcote of Gangoil, John Caldigate, An Old Man's Love and The Fixed Period. Trollope's colonies are places of moral danger where the value systems instilled by English society provide the only means for overcoming the corrupting influences of the colonial space. He writes the colonies as images of Britain, but these images are never true reflections of the homeland: there is always an element of distortion present, which serves to subvert the "Englishness" of his colonial landscapes. / English Studies / MA (ENGLISH)
