J.S. Hermstedt and the Four Clarinet Concertos of Louis Spohr

Montoya, Patrick A., Montoya, Patrick A. January 1980 (has links)
Great clarinet virtuosi have always been involved in the expansion of the repertoire for their instrument. In some cases they were themselves gifted composers--a good example being Franz Tauch--but their greatest contribution by far has been their ability to inspire other, better composers to devote the time and creative energy necessary to the composition of major works for an instrument not usually thought of as a major solo medium. Johann Simon Hermstedt's collaboration with Louis Spohr is a lesser known example of such composer-clarinet virtuoso partnerships which have included, among others, Mozart and Stadler, Weber and Baermann, and Brahms and Muehlfeld.

The Russians in California (prior to 1842)

MacKenzie, Kenneth D. 01 January 1926 (has links) (PDF)
To the individual interested in the history of California, and the influence of early inhabitants of the state on its future life and development, a study of the coming of the Russians early in the nineteenth century, of their comparatively brief stay of about thirty years, and of the effect which their presence had upon the policies and activities of at least three other nations, is one which will prove to be of surprisingly great interest. Taken together with the events leading up to the "re-discovery" of Americans by Russian navigators, and with their pioneering struggles in Alaska, such a study will reveal an era of romance and daring no great as that leading up to, and following that earlier discovery of America by Columbus

The Status of Woman in the Philosophy of Mormonism From 1830 to 1845

LeCheminant, Ileen Ann Waspe 01 January 1942 (has links) (PDF)
This work is presented for the purpose of contributing to a more accurate understanding of woman's place in the philosophy of Mormonism, and as a basis for further study on this problem. The writer has not attempted to prove any particular hypothesis regarding Mormon women but has presented data which give an historical account of woman's status in the Church and among Mormon people during the first fifteen years of the organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The writer does not claim to have made any particularly new discoveries regarding Mormon women but rather to have brought together a considerable quantity of material in which can be seen a little more clearly than heretofore the factors which have influenced woman's status in Mormon philosophy.

Alexander William Doniphan, the Forgotten Man from Missouri

Maynard, Gregory P. 01 January 1973 (has links) (PDF)
Few men on the Missouri frontier in the nineteenth century exemplified the quality of character, integrity, as well as did Alexander William Doniphan. Whether in his capacity as a lawyer, soldier, legislator or friend, he remained steadfast to his beliefs and principles, though often in the minority.Several books have been written about Doniphan's military experiences during the Mexican War. But surprisingly this is the only part of his life which so far has been reported in great detail. The other aspects of his career have been treated only in a sketchy manner. It is therefore the purpose of this paper to present in greater detail those segments of Doniphan's career which have been neglected for the most part. While the author realizes his limited ability at the present time to do complete justice to the history of Alexander W. Doniphan, this paper will bring together and integrate for the first time the commonly known and the little known facts about his life. Personal letters, newspapers, journals, public documents and public addresses have been searched carefully in an effort to extract the facts and character traits which best portrayed the man.

Economic Development in Texas During Reconstruction, 1865-1875

Adams, Larry Earl 08 1900 (has links)
The study challenges many traditional stereotypes of Texas during Reconstruction. Contrary to what Democrats charged, the Davis government did not levy exorbitant taxes. Radical taxes seemed high in comparison to antebellum taxes, because antebellum governments had financed operations with indemnity bonds, but they were not high in comparison to taxes in other states. Radical taxes constituted only 1.77 percent of the assessed value of property in Texas, which was lower than the average for the United States and about the same for other states undergoing Reconstruction. In Texas most of the tax increases during Reconstruction were made necessary by the Civil War and the increase in population. The tax increases paid for state and local governments, frontier and local protection, public buildings, internal improvements, and public schools. Edmund J. Davis, Radical governor, contributed significantly to Texas government when he attempted to focus attention on reforming the tax system, limiting state expenses to state income, limiting state aid for railroad companies, and protecting the public from railroad company abuses.

Les origines de la guerre américano-mexicaine (1846-1848) : principales interprétations des historiens américains et mexicains (1848-1940)

Blois, Pierre de 11 April 2018 (has links)
