Sir Norman Angell : critic of appeasement, 1935-1940

Risinger, Edward A. January 1977 (has links)
This doctoral dissertation focuses on the significant activities of Sir Norman Angell during the years 1935 through 1940. During this period, Angell consistently attacked Britain's policy of appeasement toward the fascist powers. Drawing upon the Angell Papers housed at Bail State University, the study attempts to chronicle the efforts of Angell to persuade both the British Government and public to-reject appeasement and support a policy which advocated resisting aggression conducted by the fascist powers. As a significant advocate of the League of Nations and collective security, Angell was an early and extremely perceptive critic of fascism. He argued for stern resistance to Japanese aggression in Manchuria in 1931, and warned the British public of the potential threat to peace emanating from the rise of fascism in Germany. When Mussolini moved to aggrandize Italy by conquering powerless Abyssinia, Angell urged the British Government to support League of Nations sanctions directed against Italy. Using his skills as a lecturer and writer, Angell cautioned that failure to resist Italian aggression in Abyssinia would mortally wound the League of Nations and cripple the concept of collective security. As Angell continued to analyze the development of British appeasement and the demise of collective security, he began to perceive a pattern which showed that failure to resist aggression in the past had led directly to further aggression. Dismayed by the obvious impotence of the League of Nations in its feeble responses to the Italo-Abyssinian War, the Rhineland Crisis, and the Spanish Civil War, Angell moved inexorably toward adherence to a traditional balance-of-power concept. Although membership was theoretically open to the fascist powers, Angell envisioned an anti-fascist alliance of Britain, France and the Soviet Union. In Angell's opinion, this alliance would serve as the primary instrument for defense of the British Empire. Defense of the British Empire was important, according to Angell, because it actually served as an embryonic League of Nations. To those Conservative critics who opposed an alliance with the Soviet Union, Angell responded with the prophetic warning that Britain's rejection of the Soviet Union might lead to an alliance between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. As Angell began to manifest an increasing concern for the defense of the British Empire, he frequently associated with other individuals who held the same concern. Although ostensibly a Labourite, Angell was willing to cooperate with individuals of diverse political persuasions in order to reverse the British policy of appeasement. Indeed, he actively participated in an organization which served as a platform for Winston Churchill's attack on appeasement. In addition, in spite of opposition from the leadership of the Labour Party, Angell flirted with the possibility of actually becoming a Popular Front candidate for Parliament. After the Munich appeasement and the start of World War II, Angell was firmly convinced that his efforts to oppose appeasement had been justified. It is not possible to determine conclusively the impact of Angell's efforts on the thinking of the British Government and public. Yet, it must be assumed that the sheer volume of Angell's writings, lectures and organizational activity must have contributed to the popularly held belief that appeasement had encouraged further aggressive demands by the Axis powers which precipitated World War II.

Josef Suk ( 1874 - 1935) : Tvorba pro ho usle / Josef Suk(1874 -1935): Works for violin

Rumler, Daniel January 2015 (has links)
The focus of my paper called Josef Suk (1874-1935): Works for violin is the analysis of his Fantasy g-minor op. 25 for violin and orchestra and his works for violin and piano. It was not my aim here to analyse note by note, but to comment on the basic tectonic features and point out the most interesting parts of the score. I look on formal aspects of these compositions, with the aim of gaining insight into the portrayal of the author's thoughts. I also pay attention to the harmonic side of these works. Also concerning the chamber works with the violin I provide an abridged analysis In each composition (if possible) the date of premiere and also its performer is indicated. The paper firstly provides general information on the life and work of Josef Suk and about the history of the Czech Quartet.

This research studies the oscillations inside the lyrical work of the Parnassian poet Francisca Júlia, considered by many authors as "Impassive Muse", since his poems correspond to the pinnacle of the Parnassian impassivity. The lyricism and limits of plastic descriptivism were examined in her poems, also the making poetry marked by lyrical, romantic elements and absorbing symbolists suggestions. For this study, we analyzed two books of poems published by the author: Mármores (1895) and Esphinges (1921). The formal elements and content were studied in order to increase the understanding not only of the work of Francisca Júlia, but also the Parnassianism as a literary movement of great repercussion in Brazil. We conclude that, although faithful follower of the Parnassian style, the poet presents in his works elements of rupture and continuity with trends in poetry local and universal, axis constitutive of Brazilian literary system.

Joseph Houldsworth Oldham : his thought and its development

Martin, Warham Lance January 1967 (has links)
This thesis will trace the development of the thought of Joseph Houldsworth Oldham. The thesis will describe the development of the thought of one of the fathers of the modern ecumenical movement. A review of the theses written in Great Britain and North America since the Second World War reveals no study of Oldham's thought. Although biographies have been written about most of Oldham's contemporaries in the modern ecumenical movement – Mott, Brent, Söderblom, Temple, Paton – no biography has been written about Oldham. Therefore the necessity of this thesis is to tell the untold story of Joseph Houldsworth Oldham: His Thought and Its Development. The author has selected Oldham's published works as the basis of this study. Oldham's unpublished papers and correspondence – much of it now gathered in boxes at Edinburgh House in London and at the World Council of Churches in Geneva – are not discussed in this thesis. This body of unpublished material could provide the basis for another study on Oldham. The author planned originally to tell the story of the thought and the life of J.H. Oldham. This intention shortly proved to be beyond the bounds of one thesis. This thesis does not, therefore, discuss in detail the story of Oldham's life. Information about his life has generally been placed in the footnotes where it forms the setting for the development of his thought. Oldham published prolifically from 1898 to 1963. The volume and variety of his writings during this sixty-five year period was not, however, immediately apparent to the author. Although the catalogue of the British Museum lists Oldham's books and a few of his pamphlets, it scarcely hints at his total output. Part of the task of this thesis, therefore, was the compilation of a bibliography of Oldham's published works.
