"Da espada à águia: construção simbólica do poder e legitimação política de Napoleão Bonaparte" / From sword to eagle: symbolical construction of power and political legitimation of Napoleon BonaparteStoiani, Raquel 15 May 2002 (has links)
The purpose of this work is to analyze some points of the symbolic construction of Napoleon Bonaparte's power, In its direct relationship with a personalizing project of power and of political legitimation, catching its meaning in a universe of political practices and representations in the end of the 18th and early 19th centuries. We give privilege to some of its aspects, like the structure of the public image associated with the empowerment and legalization of his government, trying to understand them within the inner conflict between innovation and conservation, i.e., the distancing or approaching of the models and conventions of power's symbolic construction already used during the Ancien Regime. To this, we observe the elements of propaganda that are implicit in the construction of the Napoleonic image and in the legitimation of his power, aiming to realize equally the dynamics of its formation and the repercussions of this image in the collective imaginary. We face, therefore, several "Bonaparte" and "Napoleons", social fictions built by the lise of a set of cultural creations.

The dilemma of Nomadic reindeer pastoralism : the changing reindeer pastoralist society of Tuorpon and Sirkas 1760-1860Kvist, Roger January 1989 (has links)
The areas of study for this dissertation are the Turopon and Sirkas lappbyar (communities) in the parish of Jokkmokk during the period 1760—1860. The starting point for discussion is a decrease in population through migration to Norway, from 667 inhabitants in 1781, to 353 in 1868. The primary cause was the ecological instability of reindeer herding with recurring crises caused by poor grazing, adverse snow conditions, epizootics, and predators. The stability in reindeer herding is finally determined by the numbers of grazing animals and the carrying capacities of the pastures. A disturbance in the balance between people and animals could occur if competition from the settlers limited available pastures, or the government through taxes appropriated so much of the surplus that the subsistence level was markedly increased. A closer examination reveals, however, that no outside influences can be indicated as being responsible for the population decline. Attention must thus be directed toward the inner social processes of this pastoralist society. While the reindeer herding population diminished, the total number of reindeer remained on a relatively constant level. The resulting process of accumulation consolidated the reindeer into the hands of fewer owners. While these conclusions indicate an economically differentiated society, the marriage pattern shows that the social distance between the economic groupings was very small. By promoting economic differentiation, trade had an important potential as agent of social stratification. This potential was, however, not fully realized. The equalizing factors were stronger than the differentiating forces. /
Diss. (sammanfattning) Umeå : Umeå universitet, 1989, härtill 5 uppsatser
/ digitalisering@umu

The representation of natural disasters in literature and painting in the French and German cultural space between the second half of the eighteenth century and early nineteenth centuryVelescu, Elena 10 October 2015 (has links)
This research aims to report on the relationships created among natural events of high intensity which can be categorized as natural disasters due to their destructive consequences starting with the famous earthquake of Lisbon in 1755 until the mid-nineteenth century, the advent of new technology and science, which created a new relationship between man and nature. This change in catastrophe representation in literature but also in the painting is based on religious, scientific and aestethetic changes, the key elements that we explored in this work. The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the metamorphoses of writing and visual discourse of the above-mentioned period and draw attention to the transition from horror triggered by a catastrophic event to a sensory dimension and fascination caused by the spectacle of natural phenomena. We also examined the symbolism of the motifs attached to the great myths of humanity, such as the Flood, the theme of transgression-punishment-redemption part of the disaster, which generates into a new concept, an object of analysis, reflection and contemplation, which inspires us to see the catastrophic events differently.
