The novels of Ozaki Kōyō : a study of selected works with special reference to the relationship between the fiction of the Tokugawa and early Meiji periods

Kornicki, Peter Francis January 1979 (has links)
This is a study of some of the works of the Japanese novelist, Ozaki Koyo (1867-1903). The aim has been to identify the legacy that the fiction of the Tokugawa period (1600-1868) left in his work, so comparatively little attention has been paid to his life or to works that throw no light on this question, such as his adaptations and translations of western literature. Koyo's fiction was influenced by two distinct literary traditions from the Tokugawa period. His interest in ninjobon, a genre of romantic novel, spanned his creative life and imparted to his works a tendency towards complex romantic plots and a concern for realistic dialogue. For a few years, however, this source of influence yielded to another: Koyo was involved in the revival of the works of Ihara Saikaku which took place in the years around 1890, and this profoundly affected his language and style for several years. Attempts to imitate Saikaku's fiction also enabled him to experiment with uses of the narrator that were foreign to ninjobon writers, and he became progressively more interested in probing the minds of his characters. He took these developments further in his last two novels, stimulated both by the western fiction he had read and by current literary fashions. In Tajo takon he used the narrator to express his rejection of views of marriage imported from the West; in Konjiki yasha he combined the qualities of ninjobon with a study of usury. Apart from revealing some of the areas in which Meiji fiction was indebted to tradition, Koyo's works show that the influence of Tokugawst fiction was not always as harmful as it is often supposed to be.

The Public Career of Don Ramón Corral

Luna, Jesús 08 1900 (has links)
Ramón Corral, Vice-President of Mexico from 1904 to 1911, was a crucial figure in the fall of the Porfiriato. As a politician, he worked diligently to preserve the Díaz regime. As the heir-apparent to the presidency after Díaz's death, Corral became a symbol against whom the opponents of the dictatorship of Díaz could rally. In spite of Corral's importance, he has been ignored by post-revolutionary Mexican historians - no biography of Crral has appeared since 1910. The secondary sources for the Porfiriato are inadequate to a study of Corral's career. Therefore, research centered mostly on primary sources, chiefly those in the Colección General Porfirio Díaz (Cholula, Puebla), Mexico City Newspapers, the Corral Papers in the Centro de Estudios Históricos (Mexcio City), and the Archivo General del Estado and Archivo Histórico in Hermosillo, Sonora. The Colección General Porfirio Díaz at the University of the Americas was the most important since this depository is the most extensive collection of materials on the Porfiriato and the one used least by scholars. This essay attempts to fill some of the gaps in our knowledge of Corral's public life, especially for the period of his vice-presidency. It is divided into three parts, covering Corral's career in state and national politics and in exile. The study is basically chronological except for chapter two on Corral's role in Indian - primarily Yaqui - relations. This question was so important in Sonoran politics that a separate chapter seemed necessary.

Araneda Tapia, Jorge January 2014 (has links)

Simonetti, Rafael Pereira. January 2017 (has links)
Abstract: The present dissertation tries to show how the sertanejos and the indigenous natives were represented in the newspaper the Diário da Tarde during the Movement of the Contestado (1912 to 1916). It started from the fact that there were in the region a plurality of identities marked by cultural and organizational distinctions and that were harmed by the advance of the developmental project of the Brasilian First Republic (1889-1930), resulting in territorial conflicts. Therefore, the main objective was to locate the sertanejos (or caboclos) and indigenous people of the region, between Kaingang, Xokleng and Guarani, in the newspaper, considering that the conflicts between non-Indians and Indians were not directly associated with the Answered. The concepts of social representation, discourse analysis and mediation were used to think about the treatment of the press as a historical document, a means of transmitting ideas and revealing power relations. The battles and comparisons between the two social groups in question were observed in consonance with the intellectual and governmental thought of the time, searching for information in the Public Archives of States of Paraná and Santa Catarina, in articles of the National Museum and in other studies on the contacts between Indians and non-Indians in the history of the southern region. / Mestre
