Militarism and the Chinese communists: a study of the development of communist political authority in the Shansi-Chahar-hopei border region and the Shantung guerrilla area , 1937-1940.

Wekkin , Gary Don January 1972 (has links)
Political scientists generally recognize two explanations of the extensive peasant support which the Chinese Communist Party acquired in North China during the so-called "Yenan Period" of 1937-1945. One theory posits that the North Chinese peasants gave their allegiance and support to the Chinese Communists at this time because the Communists were the only force resisting the Japanese invasion and occupation of North China; the second theory claims that the peasants supported the Communists because Communist agrarian reforms at this time liberated the peasants from centuries of poverty and class exploitation. Unfortunately, the sharp debate which has taken place between the adherents of these two theories has tended to obscure the search for additional explanations of Communist growth during the Yenan Period. Reliable Communist sources and economic surveys indicate that in two key Communist base areas, the "peasant nationalism" and "agrarian revolution" theories do not explain pre-1940 Communist growth as well as they explain post-1940 Communist growth — additional research on the growth of Communist political authority prior to 1940 is needed. This thesis contends that a comparison of the public behaviour of the Communist armies with that of the warlord armies which preceded them in North China helps explain why Communist rule was accepted by so many peasants during the years 1937-1940. Rape, looting, terror, and crushing military taxes were common fare for the millions of North Chinese peasants who lived under warlord rule from the death of Yuan Shih-k'ai in 1916 until the Japanese invasion in 1937, In contrast, the Communist armies were indoctrinated against molestation of the peasantry, and made every effort to help the peasants economically rather than burden them. The peasants were favorably impressed by the virtuous behaviour of the Communist soldiers, and gave their backing to the political movement these soldiers represented. / Arts, Faculty of / Political Science, Department of / Graduate

This paper seeks to understand aspects of schooling the state in the period corresponding to the years 1937 to 1945, known as "Estado Novo" (New State), when the Brazilian Government began to act directly in the national public education in a national project that aimed, among other goals, mix the teaching. Having a spatial area Laurentino, a city of Santa Catarina state, is done here an analysis of education at the time, mainly from the teaching materials accepted and distributed by the government of Santa Catarina, which were organized by Professor Henrique da Silva Fontes, who put his last name in the collection, the "Série Fontes". By ethnographic sample, are presented here the particular experiences of some students of the time in question, Nardelli family members, the region of "Alto Vale Itajaí". They are descendants of immigrants from Trentino (now part of Italy) that help us understand how it was for them the experience of nationalization of education, when they had to learn, to read, write in Portuguese and be a part of the profile of the Brazilian national community.

Educação para o trabalho : os sindicatos amarelos e a pedagogia estadonovista / Education for the work: yelow unions and the pedagogy of the newstate

Orientador: Jose Claudinei Lombardi / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Educação / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-07T23:59:44Z (GMT). This dissertation analyzes the historical concatenation between the emergence of the Textiles' Union (1939) and the recognition of the Mechanics' and Metallurgists' Union (1942), during the period of the New State (1937-1945) in Joinville/SC, as an aspect of the yellow trade unionism for the promotion of workers' social acquiescence and education. The purpose of this text is to show how workers were ideologically co-opted by the Unions, officially coordinated and monitored by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce (1931). From a materialistic historical perspective, we aim at analyzing the concepts of Education and Work through the writings of Marx, Gramsci and Mészáros. From the ontological apprehension of the work category, we search for the fundamental idea for the comprehension of the social relations and educational practices that, in movements of workers' representations in union organizations, have multiple determinations which historically constitute fundamental structures for the maintenance or overcoming of class struggle and social division of work. The historical research referred to the documentary survey of the union institutions for analysis and demonstration of the New State's strategies used for the insertion and propagation of authoritative intentions. Comparing the documentary sources with the implementation of working policies, we concluded that the New State aimed at the workers' education for the control and dominion of the Estate in service of the capital, consolidating the industrialization in Brazil. The National Department of Advertisement and the Department of Media and Advertisement aimed at training the intellectuals of the working movement to propagate the authoritative policies and the defense of neat work and honest capital. Finally, in Joinville, the union institutions and their representatives proved to be efficient in the maintenance of the superstructure proposed by the New State, keeping a mainly educational, ideological and reform-reactionary relation with the working class for the consolidation of the order and legitimation of the authoritative Estate / Mestrado / Historia, Filosofia e Educação / Mestre em Educação
