<p>As the database of information for constructed wetlands grows, the benefits and limitations of this alternate wastewater treatment technology will be better understood. Based upon the results for numerous field and case studies, wetlands treatment can be highly successful at a relatively low cost. This technology appears to hold considerable promise for its technological capabilities plus it is widely applicable. Wetlands treatment has been successfully used to treat domestic wastewater, industrial wastewater, leachate, acid mine drainage and stormwater.</p> / Master of Science

<p>The goal of this project was to design an airborne radio frequency circuit card that was very light weight, occupied a small volume, and operated from 20 Mhz to 1500 Mhz. The circuit card being reported on is called an RF multicoupler, and is one of two cards used in a radio frequency distribution unit (RFD). This unit interfaces a large number of receivers to various antennas.</p> <p> In the past this type of circuitry was done by cascading discrete connectorized RF components together with coaxial cable. As technology progressed the discrete surface mount or pin through RF components were mounted on single layer fiberglass or Duroid circuit cards. The next generation improved circuit density by incorporating a multilayer RF circuit card in which RF and digital control signals were run on the internal layers.</p> <p> The RF multilayer circuit card in this project represents the state-of-the-art for high density RF circuitry. The board material is a teflon/fiberglass composite. The discrete RF components are surface mount and the passive higher frequency components are physically incorporated into the RF circuit card itself as stripline RF circuits.</p> <p> Thus, by using advanced board materials, a multilayer construction, integral stripline components, and a light weight aluminum housing, it was possible to achieve dramatic weight reductions.</p> <p>Finally, much effort was expended in "up front engineering" to ensure that this RFD was capable of being transitioned from a laboratory prototype to a production unit capable of being manufactured in large quantities.</p> / Master of Engineering

<p>A methodology is developed to evaluate residential energy cost reduction options in response to increasing concern over rising fuel costs and diminishing energy reserves. Energy use factors such as climate and local geographic features are identified and energy monitoring techniques are proposed.</p> <p> A flexible, computer-based decision and risk analysis tool is developed as a tool for the economic comparison of energy saving options. Single- and multi-variable sensitivity analysis is performed. A multi-criteria optimization method is presented which includes performance and cost factors. An efficient HV AC control program is developed using multiple sensors and fully automatic control.</p> <p> Finally, a case study of two energy saving alternatives is conducted for two cities in different climatic regions. The results show that the desirability of various energy saving options is a function of local climate conditions, rate of energy cost increase and predicted savings attributable to the options.</p> / Master of Science

<p>Few introductory geography courses offer laboratory sessions. Computer-aided instruction (CAl) techniques offer good means of satisfying the need for laboratory instruction in geography, by providing graphical manipulation of representations of geographic processes. Traditional classroom approaches are unable to provide such graphical manipulation. This paper focuses on the design and implementation of the International Population module, one of six computerized laboratory modules being developed to support introductory geography instruction as proposed for project GeoSim. This module illustrates the effects of age distribution, as well as birth and death rates, on population growth for selected countries from around the world. The student is presented with key themes involved in population dynamics through assorted graphs and figures. Population projections for each country can be computed, and students may modify birth and death rates to investigate resulting effects on projected populations. The module uses Macintosh Toolbox routines to support a highly interactive window-based, menu-driven graphical interface which runs under the Macintosh II System.</p> / Master of Science
