Specifika magnetismu na hranici feromagnetického uspořádání / Peculiarities of magnetism on the verge of ferromagnetic ordering

Opletal, Petr January 2019 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the study of magnetic properties of three 5f electron itinerant ferromagnets UCo0.990Ru0.010Al, UCoGa and URhGa and investigation of their phase diagrams. The single crystals of high-quality were prepared by Czochralski method for all three compounds. The physical properties at ambient pressure were studied by macroscopic methods (magnetization, electrical transport and heat capacity measurements) and also by magnetic force microscopy (MFM). The measurements were done under various external conditions (high pressure, low temperatures, high magnetic field). Through all these measurements and external conditions we investigated the interesting physical properties and the ferromagnetic phase diagrams. Effect of different conditions during the preparation and the thermal treatment on UCoGa was studied on two different single crystals. We show that annealing leads to improved quality of samples and the gallium evaporation from the melt during the growth leads to lower quality in parts of the ingot closer to melt. MFM images of UCoGa below the ordering temperature show domain branching and narrow magnetic domains wall made only of neighboring atoms with opposing moments. We have grown first ever single crystal of URhGa with ferromagnetic ordering temperature TC = 41 K. Anomalous maximum in...

Extraktion av opolära narkotikaklassade substanser ur fettinnehållande matriser

Gustafsson, Heidi January 2015 (has links)

Electrons in 5f Systems / 5f Elektronensysteme

Le, Duc-Anh 15 October 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The localized/delocalized duality of 5f electrons plays an important role in understanding the complex physics of actinides. Band-structure calculations based on the ad hoc assumption that 5f electrons are simultaneously localized and delocalized explained the observed dHvA experiments very well. This ad hoc assumption also gives the correct equilibrium volume for delta-Pu. Experimentally, the duality of 5f electrons is observed by inelastic neutron scattering experiments, or by soft X-ray angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. It is worth recalling that the origin of partial localization in the 3d and 5f systems is quite different. In compounds with 3d electrons, the large crystalline electric field set up by the surrounding environment of transition metal ions plays a major role. On the other hand, in 5f systems, the Hund's rule correlations play the key role whilst the crystalline electric field is less important. In this thesis we have studied the effect of intra-atomic correlations on anisotropies in hopping matrix elements of different 5f orbitals. For that purpose, we used the effective model that includes on-site interactions that are responsible for Hund's rules and effective hopping terms that result from the hybridization of different 5f orbitals with the environment. Two different approximations, namely, rotationally invariant slave-boson mean-field (RISBMF) and infinite time-evolving block decimation (iTEBD), have been used to investigate the ground-state properties of the Hamiltonian. We have demonstrated that Hund's rule correlations enhance strongly anisotropies in hopping matrix elements. For a certain range of 5f bandwidth parameters this effect may result in a complete suppression of hopping processes for some of 5f orbitals, i.e., the system is in a partially localized phase. Within the RISBMF method, we calculated the ground-state properties and the phase diagram of the system. The suppression of hopping processes in some of 5f orbitals due to Hund's rule correlations can be seen through orbital-dependent quasiparticle weights. In a mean-field theory, a quasiparticle weight of zero for an orbital means a complete suppression of hopping processes in this orbital. Thus, quasiparticle weights and occupation numbers were used to classify partially localized phases. In the calculated phase diagram we obtain four partially localized phases that can be separated into two different sets. In the first set electrons in two orbitals are localized. In the second, electrons in one orbital are localized. The difference between the two sets is not simply the number of localized orbitals but the mechanism for the partial localization. For the first set, the Hund's rule mechanism applies: only those 5f electrons that enable the remaining ones to form a Hund's rule state will delocalize. This mechanism requires to have at least two localized orbitals, therefore it is definitely not applicable to those phases with only one localized orbital. For the second set, a situation similar to a single-band Mott-Hubbard transition applies. The direct on-site Coulomb interaction between jz and -jz electrons plays the key role for understanding the partial localization transition. In order to assess the validity of the RISBMF results we have used the iTEBD method to calculate the ground-state properties of a 1D system. Qualitatively, the two approaches agree with each other. However, we found an area where the RISBMF yields an artificial ground-state. Note that the mean-field method is worst for a 1D system. Therefore one shoud not judge from it the quality of the RISBMF method for the more general case.

Studium magnetismu vrstevnatých tetragonálních sloučenin na bázi vzácných zemin a uranu / Studium magnetismu vrstevnatých tetragonálních sloučenin na bázi vzácných zemin a uranu

Bartha, Attila January 2015 (has links)
We have studied the interplay between the layered crystal structure and the 5f magnetism in uranium-based tetragonal compounds UnTIn3n+2. Sin- gle crystals of U2RhIn8, URhIn5 and UIn3 were prepared by In self-flux method. The novel U2RhIn8 compound adopts the Ho2CoGa8-type struc- ture with lattice parameters a = 4.6056(6) ˚A and c = 11.9911(15) ˚A. The behavior of U2RhIn8 strongly resembles that of related URhIn5 and UIn3 with respect to magnetization, specific heat and electrical resistivity except for magnetocrystalline anisotropy developing on stacking composition in the series UIn3 vs. U2RhIn8 and URhIn5. U2RhIn8 orders antiferromagnetically below TN = 117 K and exhibits slightly enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient γ = 47 mJ·mol−1 ·K−2 . TN increases with increasing c/a ratio in contrast to the behavior of their CenTIn3n+2 counterparts. Magnetic field leaves the value of the Néel temperature of URhIn5 and U2RhIn8 unaffected up to 9 T. On the other hand, TN increases with applied hydrostatic pressure up to 3.2 GPa with the ∂TN/∂p coefficient resembling URhIn5 and UIn3. Ther- mal expansion of U2RhIn8 reveals a hysteretic behavior of the antiferromag- netic transition pointing to its 1st -order character. The magnetic structure of URhIn5 obtained from neutron diffraction propagates with k = (1 /2, 1 /2, 1 /2) and the...

The possible effect of Hypoxis hemerocalledia (African potato) on blood glucose levels : an in vitro study

Swayeb, Amel Ahmed January 2015 (has links)
>Magister Scientiae - MSc / The plant Hypoxis hemerocallidea, also known as the African potato, is commonly used as a traditional medicine to treat diabetes in South Africa. The mechanism by which it lowers blood glucose levels is not known. The main aim of this research was to study the possible hypoglycemic effect of HH using RIN-5 F pancreatic tumor cells. To accomplish this, the study was divided into three parts: (1) to test whether exposure of RIN-5F cells to glucose and HH extract affect the cell proliferation and cell viability, (2) to test whether the HH extract have an effect on insulin secretion, and (3) to test whether the HH extract has an effect on alpha amylase and alpha glucosiadase enzyme activity. The RIN-5F cells were exposed to different concentrations of glucose (5, 10, 20, 37.5, 50, 55, 74, and 92.3 mM) for different times (1, 3, 6 and 24 hours). The RIN-5F cells were also exposed to different concentrations of HH (50, 100, 150, 200 and 500 μ/ml) for different times (1, 3, 6 and 24 hours). Cell proliferation was evaluated using crystal violet staining and cell viability was evaluated using the XTT assay. To evaluate the effect of glucose and HH on RIN-5 F cell insulin secretion the cells were exposed to HH (100 μg/ml or 500 μg/ml) and / or glucose (2 mM or 50 mM) for 30 or 90 minutes. Insulin, α-amylase activity and α-glucosidase activity were evaluated by using commercially available colorimetric assays. Enzymatic activity in the presence of HH was compared with positive controls for α-amylase activity or α-glucosidase activity. Results are expressed as means ± SEM or median. Statistical differences among groups were analyzed by analyses of variance. P < 0.05 was considered as significant. An increase in the cell viability and cell proliferation was found when RIN-5 F cells were exposed to high glucose concentrations and a high dose of HH extract for a short time period (1, 3 and 6 hours). When the cells were exposed to the HH extract over 24 hours, HH did not affect cell viability significantly. Insulin secretion from RIN-5 F cells was increased when exposed to low glucose (2 mM) or high glucose (50 mM) for 30 minutes. Insulin secretion was increased from RIN5F cells after exposure to low HH (100 μg/ml) or high HH (500 μg/ml) for 30 minutes. Exposure of RIN5-F cells to HH for 90 minutes caused a further increase in insulin secretion from (4.3±0.17 mIU/mg protein; P ≤ 0.01) in 100 μg/ml, to (7.87±0.17 mIU/mg protein; P ≤ 0.001) in 500 μg/ml. At both 30 minutes and 90 minutes, insulin secretion was significantly higher when cells where exposed to 500 μg/ml HH compared to 100 μg/ml HH. Insulin secretion by cells exposed to 2 mM glucose + 100 μg/ml HH (4.69±0.16 mIU/mg protein; P ≤ 0.001) was significantly higher than when exposed to 2 mM glucose only (2.27±0.17 mIU/mg protein), while the insulin secretion in 2 mM glucose + 500 μg/ml HH (2.56±0.17 mIU/mg protein; P > 0.05) was not significantly different from that in 2 mM glucose treated cells (2.27±0.17 mIU/mg protein). Similar results are obtained after 90 minutes. In the presence of high-glucose (50 mM), at both 30 minutes and 90 minutes, insulin secretion was significantly decreased when cells where exposed to low concentration of HH (100 μg/ml) and high concentration of HH (500 μg/ml). The HH extract produced α-amylase enzyme inhibition. The maximum inhibition was at a concentration of 10μg/ml (922±117U/ml; P ≤ 0.01). The 5 μg/ml concentrations failed to produce significant inhibition. The HH extract had significant α- glucosidase inhibitory activity at a concentration of 5μg/ml (0.12±0.3U/ml; P ≤ 0.001) or 10μg/ml (0.13±0.3U/ml; P ≤ 0.001). In conclusion, based on its ability to inhibit α-amylase and α- glucosidase activity HH has the potential to be used in control of blood glucose levels. The HH aqueous extract increased insulin secretion under our basic experimental conditions and in the presence of low glucose levels, but not at high (50 mM) glucose concentrations. Insulin secretion in the presence of different glucose concentrations, in the presence of HH, needs further investigation. It is recommended that the ability of HH to stimulate insulin secretion be evaluated at 15-20 mM glucose.
