The area told as a story : an inquiry into the relationship between verbal and map-based expressions of geographical informationEide, Oyvind January 2013 (has links)
In the struggle every creator of expressions goes through, the re-strictions of the media being used are there, to be obeyed or to be questioned. In this thesis I will show how maps and verbal texts are different media, and how these differences have consequences not only for how things are said, but also for what can be said at all using these two media. A text contains too much and too little information to make a map. This means that there are things—for example, negation and disjunction—which can be expressed easily in texts, but which are difficult to put on maps. Further, a map needs a level of specificity in the input data in order to be created. Such specificity is rarely if ever found in texts. In the thesis, experiments are described in which this is studied in detail. Based on the results from these experiments, an inventory of types of information that are incom¬patible is presented, along with a discussion of the degree to which each of them is incompatible. Even if the experimental results are based on just one specific text, it is also argued that they are examples of a much more general feature, applicable to most if not all texts. The latter claim is sustained through a study of the literature in the scholarly tradition of comparing different arts arid different media. It turns out that the findings from the experiments are in line with traditional as well as recent views in this area. It is explained why this is so, and what consequences this may have for how maps and texts are treated, in academia as well as beyond.

An holistic approach to mapping the Quaternary geology and reconstructing the last glaciation of West County Mayo, Ireland, using satellite remote sensing and 'conventional' mapping techniquesJordan, Colm J. January 2002 (has links)
The Quaternary geology of West County Mayo, Ireland, has appeared in the literature over 30 times since Close's account in 1867. Various glacial reconstructions have been proposed due to i) the complex sedimentology and morphology of the area, ii) different approaches having been adopted by researchers iii) models being tainted by theory-laden evidence as different glaciological concepts were in vogue at the time of publication. Corroboration of existing information was undertaken in this research along with de novo mapping and identification of new data. An holistic approach was adopted, with 'conventional' mapping techniques integrated with digital image processing of satellite imagery. Over 20OOkm2 were field-mapped where landforms such as drumlins, moraines, roche moutonnées, kames/kettle holes and eskers were recorded along with sedimentological data including till fabric analysis, deformation structure geometry, petrographic components, lithofacies etc. Radar (ERS-1) and optical multitemporal and multispectral Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper imagery were processed, evaluated and interpreted. Due to the absorption of H20 molecules in soil and plants between 1.55-1.751im, winter Landsat TM band 5 provided most information and was used for interpretation. Geological information from conventional mapping and digital remote sensing were integrated using an inversion model. The landscape was spatially divided into assemblages of landforms and relative chronologies were determined by analysing cross-cutting landforms. The data show that there was one ice mass with two 'domes' in the research area. The dome in Clew Bay had a north-south divide with ice flow towards the east in the eastern half of the bay and towards the west in the western half. The eastern margins of this dome diverted the Midlands ice to flow in a northerly direction. An older pattern of flow, towards the northwest, was recorded in the east of the area. The deposits indicate that a staged retreat occurred generally from north to south.

The mystery of mapness : the void between mind and mapO'Neill, Maureen January 2007 (has links)
This thesis explores how our notion of mapness is related to our knowledge, reading and understanding of the complex visual language of the map, through an investigation of how we relate to the way maps look and the structures that underpin them. The processes of creating map-like artifacts through the author's own practice are reported upon and inform a drawing forth of historical, theoretical and practical perspectives that act In conjunction to influence the artistic and design expression to communicate mapness.

From Metacartography to MetaatlasgraphyWolodtschenko, Alexander 02 May 2023 (has links)
Metaatlasgraphy is a new theoretic-epistemological concept with synthesis of cartographic/cartosemiotic traditions and atlasgraphic/ atlassemiotic traditions. The monograph presents a new trend from a map-centric concept to a multidisciplinary atlas-centric concept. Further, it projects a new metascience direction: from metacartography to metaatlasgraphy.:Table of contents

ΑχαΐαςΚουνέλη, Βασιλική 11 November 2008 (has links)

The study examined the attitude of the teachers in Physical Education in Argolida toward their foreign students. 87 teachers in physical education have taken part in this survey, teachers who also work in elementary and high schools. The purpose of this study was to find if the teachers of the sample differentiate their behavior depending on the national or other identity. Two questionnaires were used to collect their answers. The first one refers to the attitude of the P.E. teachers regarding the motivation, the participation in the lesson and at the school games and competencies, and the performance of the foreign students they have in their classes, and all this comparatively with their estimations toward the native students. The second questionnaire is also a five point Lickert scale which measures the level of racism of adults. An interesting result is that there is no relation between the demographic data and the racist profile of this sample. It has been found that over half of the P.E. teachers of the sample support that the school life wouldn’t be as proper if their weren’t any foreign students (56%). Important were also the differences of means which were detected among the answers that concerned their local and foreign students. Another significant result is that there are exciting differences of means between the questions that concern the students that comes from Greece and the students that come from foreign countries. These raise further questions to be answered. Questions involving multicultural education and physical education as well.
