The effect of the organizational culture in multinational corporations and the corporation stratagem on the R&D performance

Shen, Hsiao-lan 22 April 2005 (has links)
With global competition on the rise, all enterprises must try to develop and keep their own core competitive advantage. To compete with other global business, the role of the research and development department is becoming more important. Innovative techniques or products have the ability to become an advantage. Therefore, improvement of the R&D department becomes a significant issue in the Global Business Management field. Enhancing the creative ability of R&D employees to increase the departments performance while confronting multi-national management issues raises some interesting problems. When a foreign-based company relocates to Taiwan, or foreign R&D employees are introduced to a local company, will they bring different cultures, and new approaches to the R&D department? In either case, does the R&D department try to adjust and blend different cultures to improve performance? When culture clashes occur, does the company try to apply some strategic control to match the new culture in the business? In order to solve the above questions, this research will focus on organizational culture, operational strategy and R&D performance. Including the classification of different organizational cultures and operational strategies,. Finally, analyzing the relationship among the organizational culture, operational strategy and the R&D performance and how they influence each other. After organizing the reference research and gathering the survey results from multi-national corporations of the top 500 businesses in Taiwan, we get the following results. 1. When a business leans toward a development culture, it helps to improve the global integration of the operational strategy and to further enhance the R&D performance. 2. When a business leans toward a rational culture, it is helpful to raise the local level of the operational strategy. 3. When a business leans toward a bureaucratic culture, the nature of bureaucracy lends itself to inefficiency. 4. When a business leans toward a development culture or a cohere culture, it is helpful to increase the number of patent rights, published essays from R&D, development of new products and the shift in technique 5. Global integration in multi-national corporations is directly proportional to R&D performance. Key words: multinational corporations, organizational culture, operational stratagem & R&D performance.

Testing of emergency wood shoring towers for use in urban search and rescue operations

McCord, Scott Jacob 25 June 2012 (has links)
Emergency wood shoring towers are utilized by Urban Search & Rescue (US&R) specialists to temporarily stabilize a damaged structure. Standardized designs for wood shoring towers have been developed and are published in manuals for use in US&R operations. These designs have been validated largely through past testing under simplified vertical loading. Research was conducted to provide additional insight into the performance of two common types of shores, the laced post (LP) shore and the plywood laced post (PLP) shore, under non-ideal (other than vertical) loading scenarios. Shores were tested under vertical load only, under lateral load only, and under combined vertical and lateral load. For lateral loading, some shores were tested under monotonic lateral load (lateral load applied in one direction only) and some were tested under cyclic lateral loading. Each specimen was tested to failure, and the documented capacity compared to the FEMA specified shore design capacity. Early warning signs of shore distress known as "fuses" characterized by audible cracking sounds, cupping of the wedges, or cracking of members were also evaluated during testing for their effectiveness and consistency. The performances of the laced post and plywood laced post shores were compared and recommendations made. / text

Engman, Karolin January 2018 (has links)

Valler, Agnes, Ågren, Isabelle January 2017 (has links)
SKF Coupling in Hofors manufactures screws and couplings to the energy sector and the marine industry. The products have tight tolerances to be more attractive at the market through the tolerances. With increased competition on the market, the quality requirements increase, which means that many products fail to meet the quality requirements in order to avoid customer complaints. The purpose of this work was to improve measurement accuracy. To get an overview of the current situation, interviews and observations were made. A measurement system analysis was conducted by tests where a certain number of products were measured by a certain number of operators, with a certain number of repetitions. The test results were analyzed by a two-way ANOVA and Gauge R&R, which are common methods in measurement system analysis. A cause-and-effect diagram was used to investigate the causes of quality problems. The results indicated that the existing measurement systems were not reliable enough. The shortcomings may depend on the measuring device and the operator. The measuring device may be defective or have calibration defects. Operators can have different methods when measuring which contributes to variations in the measurements. The work led to suggestions for improvements that could imply higher accuracy in the measurement systems. For example, a tighter calibration interval of the measuring device would lead to reduced impact from the measuring device. A standardized education of measurement method, measurement environment and the importance of deviation management can also lead to improved measurement accuracy.

Data mining techniques for modeling the operating behaviors of smart building control valve systems

Eghbalian, Amirmohammad January 2020 (has links)
Background. One of the challenges about smart control valves system is processing and analyzing sensors data to extract useful information. These types of information can be used to detect the deviating behaviors which can be an indication of faults and issues in the system. Outlier detection is a process in which we try to find these deviating behaviors that occur in the system.Objectives. First, perform a literature review to get an insight about the machine learning (ML) and data mining (DM) techniques that can be applied to extract patternfrom time-series data. Next, model the operating behaviors of the control valve system using appropriate machine learning and data mining techniques. Finally, evaluate the proposed behavioral models on real world data.Methods. To have a better understanding of the different ML and DM techniques for extracting patterns from time-series data and fault detection and diagnosis of building systems, literature review is conducted. Later on, an unsupervised learning approach is proposed for modeling the typical operating behaviors and detecting the deviating operating behaviors of the control valve system. Additionally, the proposed method provides supplementary information for domain experts to help them in their analysis.Results. The outcome from modeling and monitoring the operating behaviors ofthe control valve system are analyzed. The evaluation of the results by the domain experts indicates that the method is capable of detecting deviating or unseen operating behaviors of the system. Moreover, the proposed method provides additional useful information to have a better understanding of the obtained results.Conclusions. The main goal in this study was achieved by proposing a method that can model the typical operating behaviors of the control valve system. The generated model can be used to monitor the newly arrived daily measurements and detect the deviating or unseen operating behaviors of the control valve system. Also, it provides supplementary information that can help domain experts to facilitate and reduce the time of analysis.
