Deep radio imaging of the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey field : the nature of the faint radio population, and the star-formation history of the Universe

The centrepiece of this thesis is a deep, new, high-resolution 1.4-GHz image covering the United Kingdom Infrared (IR) Telescope IR Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Ultra Deep Survey (UDS) legacy field. Deep pseudo-continuum observations were made using the Very Large Array, prior to its recent upgrade, in its A, B and DnC configurations. The resulting mosaic has a full-width-at-half-maximum synthesised beam width of ≈ 1.7 arcsec and a point-source sensitivity of ≈ 60μJy (6σ ) across the central 0.6 deg2, while conserving flux from sources of extended emission. The full image covers 1.3 deg2. I also present a catalogue containing over 1,000 radio emitters, having chosen the 6-σ threshold by maximising the number of radio sources with secure optical/near-IR counterparts. Most of the sources in the catalogue (≈ 90 per cent) lie in the sub-mJy flux density regime. Deep, complementary data covering a wide range of wavelengths was used to explore this faint radio population, whose nature remains controversial. It was found that 53 per cent of the sample comprise active galactic nuclei (AGN). AGN dominate at & 0.2mJy and remain a significant population down to 0.1mJy; at lower fluxes – the so-called μJy radio population – star-forming galaxies become dominant. The radio sample presented here was also matched to Hubble Space Telescope imaging of the UDS field (which is part of the Cosmic Assembly Near-IR Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey – CANDELS) to classify the faint radio population morphologically. These classifications were done using the Gini–M20 method. It was found that a low fraction of AGN and SFGs are undergoing interactions and mergers, 33 ± 9 and 13 ± 7 per cent, respectively. The merger fraction does not appear to have evolved significantly since z ∼ 3. This suggests that mergers have played a relatively minor role in the assembly of galaxies and super-massive black holes – certainly less significant than previously thought. Finally, I present a study of cosmic star-formation activity as a function of stellar mass and redshift, exploiting panchromatic stacking. Mid-IR–through–radio images, including new data from Herschel, are stacked at the positions of a K-selected (i.e. an approximately mass-selected) sample in the UDS field. Specific star-formation rates (SSFR, i.e. star-formation rate per stellar mass, or the rate at which a galaxy is converting its gas into stars) were derived from UDS radio luminosities measured here and stellar masses from the literature. The SSFR was found to be poorly correlated with stellar mass; it decreases with decreasing redshift; at a given mass, SSFR rises with redshift. These results indicate that at early epochs, galaxies were forming stars more efficiently and at a higher rate.

Modeling submillimetre polarization of molecular cloud cores using successive parametrized coordinate transformations

We present a novel new method for modelling magnetized molecular cloud cores using submillimetre linear polarization maps from thermal dust emission. Our PolCat modelling software builds a three-dimensional core model via the use of consecutive parametrized coordinate transformations, and produces simulated polarization maps to fit to observational datasets. We utilize the Ferret evolutionary optimizer to search the parameter space to simultaneously minimize chi-squared for the intensity and polarization position angle maps separately. We have applied PolCat to multiple test problems and several datasets from the SCUPOL Legacy Catalogue. We find that PolCat is able to distinguish between maps of twisted and non-twisted field geometries and identify twist symmetry. Preliminary fits to several datasets show that the best potential field geometries to our sample cores contain field twists. Further research using a larger number of maps is required to determine if twisted fields are commonplace in cores.

This study analyzed news coverage from the Indianapolis Star and The New York Times about the blockbuster drug Prozac® from the day it was approved on Dec. 29, 1987, until Dec. 31, 2006, to gain insights about whether the tone and prominence of news stories about Prozac changed over the duration of its 20 year lifecycle.A content analysis was used to evaluate whether stories were more favorable in tone during the first phase of Prozac's lifecycle, whether the tone of those stories became more negative as time passed, and, if it did, during which phase of Prozac's lifecycle that change in tone occurred.The findings from this study can assist public relations practitioners - particularly those who work in the pharmaceutical industry - in developing proactive and strategic media relations plans for consumer products such as prescription drugs and establishing more appropriate expectations and projected metrics. / Department of Journalism

Nondestructive molecular sex determination of free-ranging star-nosed moles (Condylura cristata)

Molecular techniques, particularly noninvasive genetic sampling (NGS) and nondestructive sampling (NDS), are increasingly being used as tools to study the ecology of free-ranging mammals. A specific application of these methods is the molecular sexing of species for which external sex differentiation is challenging. Star-nosed moles (Condylura cristata) are a little-studied species in which females possess a peniform clitoris making them externally indistinguishable from males. To my knowledge, no studies have employed NDS to study any aspect of their ecology. I therefore sequenced fragments of one X-chromosome (Zfx) and two Y-chromosome (Sry and Zfy) genes from known-sex specimens, and designed species-specific primers to co-amplify these loci from hair, claw and fecal samples of 16 star-nosed moles. I found all tissue types were highly (90-100%) reliable for sex determination. I envision that this NDS method will facilitate future capture-and-release studies on the natural history and social structure of this fascinating, semi-aquatic mammal.

It's Hard to Be Sant in the City: How Bhindranwale and the Sikh Militants Invoked the Sikh Past to Rationalize Violence in Post-Partition Punjab

1984’s Operation Blue Star, an Indian Army maneuver to rid the Sikh Golden Temple of militants, shocked the world. Bullet holes riddled the temple’s façade in the operation’s aftermath, and the global Sikh community was outraged at the desecration of the site. How did the political conflict in Punjab escalate to this point? What were the factors behind the Sikh militant movement, and how did the militants rationalize their activities, considered by some as rampant terrorism? This thesis examines the circumstances surrounding the rise to arms of the Punjabi Sikh militants and the religious influences of their movement. Identifying how themes of the Sikh past, particularly those of communal identity, martyrdom, and martial tradition, were repurposed and employed by militant Sikhs to ground their violence in Sikh tradition and practice, the thesis finds that leaders of the movement, like Sant Bhindranwale, created rhetorical bridges to the Sikh past and embedded in the community a sense of participating in a greater, cosmic war. There exists a tendency among scholars to overlook the religious elements of the movement in order to assign political, economic or sociological roots to the conflict, but religion was a primary factor in the conflict, as demonstrated through the words and actions of the militants themselves. This research adopts a sociotheological approach to religious studies, drawing upon framework by Mark Juergensmeyer, Émile Durkheim and Pierre Bourdieu, among others, to frame the influence of the Sikh past on the militants’ own plane of reference.

Analysis and interpretation of astrophysical optical emission-line spectra / Susan Ilani Loubser

This study consists of a quantitative optical emission-line analysis of spectra from five blue compact galaxies (Zw 0855, Mrk 1267, II Zw 33, Tol 2 & Tol 3), as well as a qualitative analysis of spectra from two galactic H II regions (NGC 3603 & NGC 3576). It serves a two-fold purpose: first, to understand the CCD reduction, spectra extraction and different nebular analysis methods, together with their applications and limitations, preparatory to studies using the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) and second, to extend current star formation related research to include extragalactic starburst galaxies. The observations were carried out using the 1.9m telescope (equipped with a grating spectroscope and CCD detector) of the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO), during the period 1 to 7 March 2005. The necessary CCD data reduction, spectra extraction, wavelength and flux calibration, Doppler shift as well as reddening correction procedures were performed before the emission lines were identified and measured. A full nebular analysis, including temperature, density, metallicity (oxygen abundance) and other chemical abundance determinations, was performed on the blue compact galaxies (BCGs). Two different nebular analysis packages viz. IRAF's nebular and SNAPwere used, with all the results well within the range of values expected for metal poor BCGs. Comparison of heat transfer models at the pebble, gas and reflector interface in the PBMR / Kamantha Mannar

It is a great challenge in the design of the PBMR to accurately predict gas flow and heat transfer in the reactor. Understanding the heat transfer at the core-reflector interface in particular is a very important aspect as the reactivity of the control rods housed in the reflectors is highly temperature dependent. It is also very important because the core-reflector interface is on the critical path for heat removal during accident conditions. PBMR has developed an OECD/NEA coupled neutronic/thermal-hydraulic benchmark to aid in the understanding of the different modelling approaches currently employed at PBMR. A comparison of THERMIX-KONVEK and DIREKT results showed large temperature differences at the core-reflector interfaces. Further investigation showed that these differences are as a result of the numerical methods used i.e. Cell-Centred (CC) vs. Vertex-Centered (VC). The present study extended this comparison to Star-CD (CC) and Flownex (VC) which are also used to simulate the reactor at PBMR. An ID MATLAB program that mimics the CC and VC numerical methods was verified against Star-CD and Flownex. This program was then used to model an ID version of the OECD/NEA benchmark. Results were compared with DIREKT and THERMIX-KONVEK. Although the results compared well, there were significant errors at the core-reflector interfaces. The findings of this study were that different numerical methods will predict different temperatures, heat fluxes and (temperature-dependent) sink terms. It was also shown that in addition to the differences resulting from numerical methods, differences were seen between Star-CD and DIREKT and Flownex and THERMIX-KONVEK in the region of the core-reflector boundary. In general, for complicated simulations like that of the pebble bed, the numerical basis of software used to simulate the problem needs to be understood for the problem to be correctly modelled. / Thesis (M.Sc. Investigation into the velocity distribution through an annular packed bed / Hendrik Jacobus Reyneke

The purpose of this study was to investigate the velocity distribution through an annular bed packed randomly with equal sized spheres. Extensive research has been conducted on the velocity distribution inside packed beds packed with equal sized spheres, different sized spheres, deformed spheres, cylinders and Raschig-rings. A majority of these experimental and numerical studies focused on the cylindrical packed bed. These studies and numerical models are all confined to the velocity profile once the fluid flow is fully developed. The development of the velocity through the inlet region of the bed and the fluid flow redistribution in the outlet of the bed is thus neglected. The experimental investigation into the velocity distribution down stream of the annular packed bed of the HTTU indicated that the velocity profile was independent of the mass flow rate for a particle Reynolds number range of 439 £ Re £ 3453 . These velocity profiles did not represent the distribution of the axial velocity due to shortcomings associated with the single sensor hot wire anemometry system used to measure the velocity distribution. A numerical investigation, using the RANS CFD code STAR-CCM+®, into the velocity distribution downstream of an explicitly modelled bed of spheres indicated that the axial velocity distribution could be extracted from the experimental velocity profiles by using an adjustment factor of 0.801. This adjusted velocity profile was used in the verification of the implicit bed simulation model. The implicit bed simulation model was developed in STAR-CCM+®. The resistance of the spheres was modelled using the KTA (1981) pressure drop correlation and the structure of the bed was modelled using the porosity correlation proposed by Martin (1978), while the effective viscosity model of Giese et al. (1998), adjusted by a factor of 0.8, was used to model the velocity distribution in the near wall region. It was found that the structure in the inlet region of the bed, where two walls disturb the packing structure, can be modelled as the weighted average of the radial and axial porosity while the structure in the outlet regions can be modelled by letting the radial porosity increase linearly to unity. The basic shape of the velocity profile is established immediately when the fluid enters the bed. The amplitude of the velocity peaks however increase in magnitude until the velocity profile is fully developed at a distance approximately of five sphere diameters from the bed inlet. The profile remains constant throughout the bed until the outlet region of the bed is reached. In the outlet region a significant amount of fluid redistribution is observed. The amplitude of the velocity peaks is reduced and the position of the velocity peaks is shifted inwards towards the centre of the annular region. The fully developed velocity profile, predicted by the simulation model is in good agreement with profiles presented by amongst others Giese et al. (1998). The current model however also offers insight into the development of the profile through the inlet of the bed and the fluid redistribution, which occurs in the outlet region of the bed. / Thesis (M.Ing. The Effects of the Glyphosate-based Herbicide WeatherMax on Sexual Differentiation and Growth in the Wood Frog (Lithobates sylvaticus)

Glyphosate-based herbicides are the dominant pesticide on the market and are utilized worldwide in both the agricultural and forestry industries. Their prevalence comes at a time when concern over the potential effects of pesticide application in amphibian spawning grounds is growing. The primary goal of this thesis was to determine if the glyphosate-based herbicide WeatherMax® has the potential to disrupt sexual differentiation and growth in the wood frog (Lithobates sylvaticus) in a pulse exposure at the predicted maximal environmental concentration (PMEC) of 2.88 mg acid equivalent per liter. This was carried out in laboratory, mesocosm and in-situ field exposures, in an attempt to determine how a potential disruption might vary between experimental environments. In this study, tadpoles from three split-wetlands targeted at the PMEC for WeatherMax were found to display no significant change in survival or growth, however gene expression of several genes involved in steroidogenesis during sexual differentiation (cyp19, cyp17, star, foxl2) were found to be affected. The effects on these genes appeared to be dependant on the exposure concentration of WeatherMax in each wetland, which varied even though all three wetlands were meant to target the PMEC. The wetland that was measured as having the highest herbicide concentration (PMEC 13) was found to have a female biased sex ratio. The results found in the field varied from those found in the more artificial exposures. In the laboratory the PMEC of WeatherMax experienced complete mortality, whereas in the mesocosms survival was not significantly affected. Sex ratios were unaffected in the laboratory, however at the PMEC there was a significant male bias in the mesocosms. The discrepancies in the results obtained from the different exposure types highlights the importance of real world exposures. That the same concentration that caused complete mortality in the laboratory caused sublethal effects in the field is of importance as it denotes that these endpoints may not be easily investigated in these synthetic exposures. This project is a part of the Long Term Experimental Wetlands Area (LEWA) and contributes to the body of information amassed therein on the impact of a glyphosate-based herbicide on amphibians in a wetland ecosystem.
