Identification and Characterization of a Calcium/Phospholipid-Dependent Protein Kinase in P1798 LymphosarcomasMagnino, Peggy E. (Peggy Elizabeth) 05 1900 (has links)
Calcium/phospholipid-dependent protein kinase (PKC) was partially purified from P1798 lymphosarcoma. Phospholipid-dependence was specific for phosphatidylserine. PKC phosphorylated Histone 1, with an apparent K_m of 14.1 μM. Chlorpromazine, a lipid-binding drug, inhibited PKC activity by 100%. Further studies were undertaken to establish analytical conditions which could be applied to the study of PKC in intact cells. The conditions included (1) determining optimum cell concentration for measuring PKC activity, (2) recovering PKC into the soluble fraction of cell extracts, (3) evaluating calcium and phospholipid requirements of PKC in this fraction, and (4) inhibiting PKC in this fraction. Final studies involved treatment of intact cells with potential activators. Both phytohaemagglutinin and a phorbol ester increased PKC activation.

Background: In scientific literature there are various treatment programs for people with alcohol dependence described, however, are psychosocial factors that promote recovery process described to a limited extent. Purpose: To describe the psychosocial factors that promotes recovery from alcohol dependence. Method: Literature study of ten scientific articles, published between 1999-2011 with both qualitative and quantitative design. Results: According to the literature, the recovery process can be considered to begin when a person with alcohol dependence reached his personal rock bottom. The longer the recovery progresses, the greater are the overall level of performance. Social support is described as an important factor to prevent relapse and reduce the need for professional help. Self-belief and support of self-help groups are described as important to maintaining sobriety. Social support and influence from family members was related to increased ability to analyze and assess their situation during the recovery. Therapeutic alliance and mutual goals are also important factors. Once treatment has been successfully described as a combination of self-motivation and willingness to initiate a radical change in behaviour. Conclusion: Psychosocial factors in the form of supportive relationships appear to promote recovery from alcohol dependence. Other conclusions drawn from this study is limited in scope and compiled by the studies of different design. Further studies need to be implemented in order to draw general conclusions, which can in turn be in support of clinical work.

Data Dependence Analysis and Its Applicatons on Loop TransformationYang, Cheng-Ming 18 July 2000 (has links)
For the past several decades, parallel processing has become an important research subject in the computer science area. According to the statistics, in executing a numerical program, most of time is spent on the loops. If we can use the technique of loop restructuring in the parallelizing compiler such that the conventional sequential program can be executed by exploiting the characteristics of vector machine or parallel machine, the execution efficiency will be greatly improved. In the parallelizing compiler, data dependence analysis is very important because it provides the information for loop restructuring.
Data dependence analysis is necessary in order to determine whether a loop can be vectorized or parallelized. It analyzes whether the same array element or variable will be accessed more than once in a loop (e.g. access the same memory location more than once in loop execution). In the recent years, the researches on parallelizing compiler are considerable. But, data dependence analysis is still a bottleneck. There are many data dependence test such as Banerjee Test, test, Omega Test, I Test, Power Test, ... and so on, which have been used in the design of parallelizing compiler. In the thesis, we will propose a novel exact data dependence test method called Interval Reduced test (IR test). This method reduces the integer boundary of each constraint variable by repeatedly projection. When the effective region of a variable is reduced to be empty, the constraint containing this variable has no integer solution and the memory accesses under this constraint are therefore independent.
The IR test is only suitable for the loops in which the loop bounds are rectangular, triangular, or unknown at compiling-time in some limited condition. To enhance the data dependence analysis capability of the IR test, we proposed the Extension-IR test in this thesis to extend the dependence testing range of one-dimensional array references to linear subscripts with variable bounds under any given direction vector. The Extension-IR test can solve in effective polynomial time.
When array subscripts are non-linear expressions or too complex to analyze by the existing data dependence testing schemes, we devise a new parallelization algorithm called non-linear array subscripts test (NLA test) to deal with. The iterations subject to loop-carried dependence are scheduled into different wavefronts, while the iterations with no loop-carried dependence are assigned into the same wavefront. Based on the wavefront information, the original loop is transformed into parallel code for execution at run-time.
Loop interchange is an important restructuring technique for supporting vectorization and parallelization. In this thesis, we proposed a technique, which can determine efficiently, whether loops can be interchanged between two non-adjacent loops on perfect nested loop or some imperfectly nested loop. A method for determining whether two arbitrary levels in perfectly nested loops, which contain IF and GOTO statements, can be interchanged is also presented in this thesis.

The results show that a competitive-collaboration relationship is very popular. Many companies in this industry are small-middle size. Since they have the problems of ¡§diseconomies of scale¡¨ and ¡§scarce resource¡¨, organizations emphasize on cooperating. To strength cooperation performance, good communication has significantly effect on goal achievement, and high trust and dependence would enhance satisfaction with each other.

Ethanol dependence in Drosophila larvaeRobinson, Brooks Gregory 15 October 2013 (has links)
Addiction to alcohol is a disease of changed behavior that is uniquely human in it's complexity. Because of this, researchers have strived to develop animal models of individual endophenotypes of alcoholism in hopes that the larger picture will eventually come into focus. Recent studies in Drosophila have shown that many complex alcohol-related behaviors are conserved in this genetic model system. The series of projects presented in this dissertation outline the first account of physiological ethanol dependence in Drosophila. We first show that Drosophila larvae are able to form conditioned associations between an aversive heat stimulus and an attractive odor. We then show that an acute, low-dose ethanol exposure disrupts this learning ability. Finally, we present data that demonstrate that larvae adapt to the presence of chronic ethanol to the point that they only perform normally in the learning assay when ethanol is present in the animal. We then propose that the major mechanism for this dependence involves ethanol regulating the acetylation level and therefore expression level of a large number of genes by inhibiting histone deacetylase enzymes. These experiments set the groundwork for the analysis of a network of genes, connected through interactions with histone deacetylase enzymes, that are involved in producing ethanol dependence. / text

At the beginning of the Edo period (1600-1868 CE) the Japanese Tokugawa shōgunate enforced the famous closed country policy. During the period of isolation that would ensue until the Meiji Restoration, mathematics flourished like never before. The new tradition that arose was rich and diverse, with mathematics manifesting itself through different practitioners in many different ways. And, for the first time in Japanese history, mathematics began to diverge from Chinese practice, developing a uniquely Japanese identity.
Because of this, we therefore can look to Edo mathematics with the expectation that it can especially clearly illustrate cultural variability in the practice of mathematics if it is the case that there exists such.
The present thesis examines whether cultural-contextual factors from within the isolated Edo environment impacted individual practitioners of mathematics to result in the variation and uniqueness that appeared. Also, it highlights and addresses what the consequences might be for historians, philosophers, and mathematicians if such an influence did occur.
