Preliminary Design of Tall Buildings

Paulino, Madison Radhames 23 April 2010 (has links)
Techniques for preliminary analysis of various tall building systems subjected to lateral loads have been studied herein. Three computer programs written in Matlab® graphical user interface language for use on any personal computer are presented. Two of these programs incorporate interactive graphics. A program called Wall_Frame_2D is introduced for two-dimensional analysis of shear wall-frame interactive structures, using the shear-flexural cantilever analogy. The rigid outrigger approach was utilized to develop a program called Outrigger Program to analyze multi-outrigger braced tall buildings. In addition, a program called Frame Tube was developed which allows analysis of single and quad-bundled framed tube structures. The tube grids are replaced with an equivalent orthotropic plate, and the governing differential equations are solved in closed form. Results for lateral deflections, rotations, and moment, shear, and torque distributions within the various resisting elements are compared against other preliminary and "exact" matrix analysis methods for several examples. SAP2000 was used to obtain "exact" results. The approximate analyses are found to give reasonable results and a fairly good indication of the behavior of the actual structure. These programs are proposed for inclusion in a knowledge-based approach to preliminary tall building design. The tall building design process is outlined and criteria are given for the incorporation of these "Resource Level Knowledge Modules" into an integrated tall building design system.

A PERFORMANCE COMPARISON OF FRAME STRUCTURES IN WIMAX MULTI-HOP RELAY NETWORKS

Kolomitro, Pandeli 10 September 2010 (has links)
Wireless multi-hop relay systems are the newest amendment to the IEEE 802.16 standard for local and metropolitan area networks, else known as WiMAX. Relay systems come in different flavours, based on their capabilities and have the potential to offer many advantages over the single-hop technology. Upcoming broadband wireless technologies, that utilize multi-hop relays, need good network planning and design in order to achieve their full potential. There are two main types of multi-hop relay stations: transparent, which are not able to transmit control information and non-transparent, which have the capability to transmit such information. This study focuses mainly on non-transparent relay stations due to their complexity and ability to operate in a more than two hop environment. Currently, the latest IEEE amendment provides two different frame structures − single and multi-frame − for utilization in multi-hop relay networks, to allocate bandwidth. The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the two proposed frame structures, in various network scenarios in terms of delay, throughput, rate, and user capacity. In addition, we will discuss some of the issues that need to be considered to cost effectively plan and design a multi-hop relay network. The evaluation methodology that we utilize is in accordance with the Multi-hop Relay System Evaluation Methodology developed by the IEEE 802.16 Broadband Wireless Access Working Group. To evaluate the above frame structures we developed an evaluation model for use in the network simulator 2 (ns2) from University of California Berkeley, by modifying the light WiMAX (LWX) add-on from Taiwan University. Unlike the original LWX module, which supports only transparent relay configurations, our module supports both multi-frame and single frame structures, as well as non-transparent multi-hop relay environments. To our knowledge there is no previous work, which analyzes the performance of the single frame and multi-frame system in multi-hope relay environments using the guidelines from the latest amendment to the standard (IEEE 802.16j-2009). Moreover, there is no publicly available software that will enable the study of such performance. The resulting source code of our work has been made publicly available and can be obtained from our website. / Thesis (Master, Electrical & Computer Engineering) -- Queen's University, 2010-09-09 23:55:00.995

This work is associated to the research project to implement Brazil FrameNet Project (SALOMÃO, 2008) and it aims at the lexical description of eight Lexical Units (LU) which evoke the CUT scene: aparar v., aparado adj., cortar v., fatiar v., ralar v., ralado v., recortar v., serrar v .The research was done based on corpus evidences taken from sixteen corpora inserted into the LINGUATECA project. This work also has the purpose to record the combinatory syntactic and semantic properties (the socalled valences) of these LU. Taking for granted the theoretical references from the Frames Semantics and inserted within the sociocognitive agenda, the research is developed from the schemes of Frame Net American project. Following the frame description and the definition of the Frame Elements (FE), the sentence annotation is operated from the postulation of its three main layers: the Frame Element, the Grammatical Function and the Syntagma Type. It is expected that the analyses developed in this work may contribute to the construction of Brazilian Portuguese counterpart to FrameNet semantic net.

Trauma and recovery in Janet Frame’s fiction

Lawn, Jennifer 11 1900 (has links)
Focusing on four novels by Janet Frame in dialogue with texts by Freud, Zizek, Lacan, and Silverman, my project theorizes trauma as the basis for both an ethical and an interpretive practice. Frame's fiction develops a cultural psychology, showing how the factors of narcissistic fantasy and the incapacity to mourn contribute to physical and epistemic aggression committed along divides of ethnicity, gender, and linguistic mode of expression. Employing trauma as a figure for an absolute limit to what can be remembered or known, I suggest that reconciliation with whatever is inaccessible, lacking, or dead within an individual or collective self fosters a non-violent relation with others. I begin by querying the place of "catharsis" within hermeneutic literary interpretation, focusing on the construction of Frame within the New Zealand literary industry. With Erlene's adamantine silence at its centre, Scented Gardens for the Blind (1964) rejects the hermeneutic endeavour, exemplified by Patrick Evans' critical work on Frame, to make a text "speak" its secrets. My readings of Intensive Care (1910) and The Adaptable Man (1965) address inter-generational repetitions of violence as the consequences of the failure to recognise and work through the devastations of war. The masculine fantasy of totality driving the Human Delineation project in Intensive Care has a linguistic corollary in Colin Monk's pursuit of the Platonic ideality of algebra, set against Milly's "degraded" punning writing. In The Adaptable Man, the arrival of electricity ushers in a new perceptual regime that would obliterate any "shadow" of dialectical negativity or internal difference. The thesis ends with a swing toward conciliation and emotional growth. The homosexual relationship depicted in Daughter Buffalo (1972) offers a model of transference, defined as a transitional, productive form of repetition that opens Talbot to his ethnic and familial inheritance. Working from within a radical form of narcissism, the novel reformulates masculinity by embracing loss as "phallic divestiture" (Kaja Silverman).

On localic convergence with applications

Ngo Babem, Annette Flavie 01 1900 (has links)
Text in English / Submitted in partial fulfillment of a Master's Degree at the University of South Africa / Our main goal is to collate into a single document what is presently known regarding pointfree convergence. This will be done by exposing some well-known results on pointfree convergence in a much more simpler way. We will start to study the convergence and clustering of filters in frames in terms of covers and use this to characterise compact frames and some type of uniform frames. We will extend this study to a more general type of filters. We will then discuss convergence and clustering of filters on a locale, where a filter on a locale L is just a filter in the sublattice of all the sublocales of L. This convergence has many applications like characterising compact locales and also characterising sharp points which will also be studied. Finally, the latter concepts of convergence and clustering will be reconciled with the previous one. / Mathematical Sciences
