Wildlife hazard at aerodromes is the potential risk of an aircraft colliding with species, soil or airspace. Across the world, the rate of collisions of this nature is increasing. Thus, the uncontrolled presence of animals in the vicinity of runways is one of the risks that aircraft face during their operations, especially during landing and take-off, when there is a greater possibility of collisions. Because of this, it is necessary to implement actions of wildlife control and management that should effect the reduction or even the interruption of collisions in aerodromes. In order to do so, a risk assessment of the fauna associated with the aerodrome must be carried out in order to identify problem species and to direct the application of resources to control the species that represent greater risk for the airport operations. Considering the greater risk of collision of aircraft with birds, the present work sought to evaluate the risk of avifauna to Presidente Itamar Franco Airport, a strategically located airportin the Zona da Mata of Minas Gerais and that serves the region with scheduled flights for passengers and with infrastructure for air cargo logistics. In order to identify the avifauna associated with this airport, a bibliographic survey was carried out, which resulted in 185 species registered in the year 2001, before the construction of the airport, and work sessions on field lasting twelve months, from 2015 to 2016, which resulted in the registration of 130 species. In the same period from 2015 to 2016, potential sources of avifauna attraction were identified at both the airport and the ASA, which are mainly represented by food sources to birds. In addition, through remote sensing and the application of the NDVI vegetation index, the temporal evolution of plant fragmentation in the ASA of the Presidente Itamar Franco Airport was evaluated, which can strongly influence the diversity and behavior of the bird species in the region. Finally, with the application of methodologies proposed in the Brazilian legislation, the problem species were identified, a total of eight, and, from this information, actions were proposed that will contribute to the control of these species.

Haglund, Emelie January 2016 (has links)
The Methodology for inventory of contaminated sites (MIFO) is a method designed by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency with an aim to facilitate agents and consultants during inventory of contaminated areas. It is structured into two stages, the first phase comprises oriented studies of the area while the second one consists of conceptual studies, such as field testing and analysis. After each phase the object is assigned a risk class that describes the degree of contamination and the risk associated with it. At Sundsvall-Timrå airport, the soil, surface- and groundwater at two fire drilling sites are contaminated with the anthropogenic substance PFOS, a former supplement in extinguishing foam. As a result of this, a number of environmental investigations have occurred over the past seven years which has led to a substantial amount of data in regards to the degree and dispersion of the contamination. However, prior to this date no risk classification according to MIFO phase 2 has been done. In order to appropriately remediate the site, it is essential that this step of the process is completed. Thus the County Administrative Board of Västernorrland in Sweden commissioned this thesis for the purpose of risk classifying Sundsvall-Timrå Airport. This was done by analysing the results from previous environmental investigations made by WSP Environmental and comparing them to the Swedish Geological Institute’s preliminary benchmark value for PFOS. The fact that Sundsvall-Timrå airport is situated in close approximation to a nature reserve and due to the high degree of contamination together with the substance distribution capabilities and high toxicity, the study resulted in the object being assigned risk class 1, very high risk.

Seat Allocation And Pricing in a Duopoly in The Airline Industry

Mazumdar, Chandra Sen January 2016 (has links) (PDF)
Revenue Management (RM) is the practice of managing perishable assets by control-ling their availability and/or prices with an objective to maximize the total revenue. Seat inventory allocation falls in the purview of quantity-based RM. The liberalization of the aviation sector and the subsequent entrance of the low-cost carriers saw an ever-increasing customer base for the airline industry. Given the large number of buyers, firms were free to decide the price at which they would sell tickets. The low-cost carriers started to follow a third degree price discrimination and segmentation of the market, charging a higher price to the market with a relatively inelastic demand. Although a lot of work has been done in the area of seat inventory allocation under a monopolistic market scenario, we realized that not a lot of work had been done in a competitive market scenario. This thesis considers the problem of seat inventory allocation and pricing in a duopoly where each of the competing airlines have two fare-classes. We consider the possibility that the same fare-class may be priced differently by the two competing airlines and allow for the over flow of passengers between the airlines in the same fare-class. In the first part of our work, we develop a non-linear mathematical model for setting the booking limits for one of the two competing air-lines such that the revenue earned is maximized. We consider over flow of passengers from one airline to another in the same fare-class in response to a price differential and compare the results obtained from our model with the standard Expected Marginal Seat Revenue (EMSR) model under a monopolistic scenario. The results show that our model gives higher revenues than that obtained from the EMSR model. In the second part of our work, we consider a non-cooperative game between two competing airlines with price cutting as the strategy to increase their demand. Through numerical computations, we identify the pure strategy Nash equilibrium. From the results, we conclude that Nash equilibrium is achieved only when both the airlines follow the same pricing strategy indicating that individual price cutting will not be beneficial. This also indicates that unless the competitors enter into a cooperative coalition with each other, they would not benefit from deep discount offers. In the third and final part, we prove theoretically the existence of pure strategy Nash equilibrium in a two airline, two fare-class problem with price sensitive over flow of customers in the same fare-class that was computationally analysed earlier. The strategy / strategies at which Nash equilibrium is achieved are identified. We show that Nash equilibrium is only achieved when both the airlines price identically. Hence, our thesis concludes that differential pricing does not hold any significance for the competing airlines from an operational perspective.
