A multi-configuration approach to reliability based structural integrity assessment for ultimate strengthKolios, Athanasios 11 1900 (has links)
Structural Reliability treats uncertainties in structural design systematically,
evaluating the levels of safety and serviceability of structures. During the past
decades, it has been established as a valuable design tool for the description of
the performance of structures, and lately stands as a basis in the background of
the most of the modern design standards, aiming to achieve a uniform
behaviour within a class of structures. Several methods have been proposed for
the estimation of structural reliability, both deterministic (FORM and SORM) and
stochastic (Monte Carlo Simulation etc) in nature.
Offshore structures should resist complicated and, in most cases, combined
environmental phenomena of greatly uncertain magnitude (eg. wind, wave,
current, operational loads etc). Failure mechanisms of structural systems and
components are expressed through limit state functions, which distinguish a
failure and a safe region of operation. For a jacket offshore structure, which
comprises of multiple tubular members interconnected in a three dimensional
truss configuration, the limit state function should link the actual load or load
combination acting on it locally, to the response of each structural member. Cont/d.

Examining Aspects of Copper and Brass Corrosion in Drinking WaterMurray-Ramos, Nestor Agustin 02 February 2007 (has links)
As the water industry complies with the new arsenic standard and new treatments are installed, unintended consequences might be expected in relation to corrosion control when sulfate/chloride ratio, pH, phosphate, iron, aluminum, bicarbonate and organic matter levels are altered. In some cases, these changes will be beneficial and in other detrimental.
This research project is the first to systematically evaluate the effect of some key changes in the chemistry of the treated water in relation to copper and brass corrosion control. A 1.25 year pipe rig experiment was executed to anticipate effects of arsenic treatment on copper pinholes in 10 representative waters. The control water will mimic a synthesized version of Potomac River that is extremely aggressive to copper. Consistent with prior research that pitting is driven by free chlorine in this water and inhibited by phosphate, substitution of chloramine for chlorine or dosing of phosphate completely eliminated deep pits on tubes for the duration of the experiment. Chlorine caused serious pitting if NOM was less than 0.3 mg/L over a range of Cl:SO4 ratio's. Pitting seemed to occur under deposits of iron or aluminum on the copper surface, and if anything, an equimolar amount of iron caused worse pitting than aluminum. Amendment of the aggressive water with 3 mg/L NOM eliminated growth of deep pits (> 0.05 mm).
While brass pipes (containing 0.09% lead, 63% copper and 36% zinc) was attacked non-uniformally by an aggressive water at high pH and with high Cl2 content, no significant pitting occurred at any condition tested, even though pitting did occur for copper exposed to the exact same water. The implication is that zinc in the alloy may help to prevent non-uniform attack on copper and copper alloys.
The ban on lead-containing plumbing materials in the Safe Drinking Water Act (1986) and the EPA Lead and Copper Rule (1991) have successfully reduced lead contamination of potable water supplies. This part of the work carefully re-examined the lead contamination concern from the standpoint of existing performance standards for brass. The ANSI/NSF 61, Section 8 standard is relied on to protect the public from in-line brass plumbing products that might leach excessive levels of lead to potable water. Experiments were conducted to look at the practical strictness of these test-standards. In-depth study of the standard revealed serious flaws due from the use of a phosphate buffer and a failure to control carbonate dissolution from the atmosphere in the test waters. In order to help prevent undesirable outcomes in the future, standard's improvements are needed to assurance that brass devices passing this test are safe. / Master of Science

Architecture logicielle : une expérimentation industrielle avec Dassault SystèmesSanlaville, Rémy 03 May 2002 (has links) (PDF)

The diversity in the production of information from public and private institutions provide daily challenges for archiving, which refer to how the area will provide access, recovery and reuse of information. In this dynamic context, make use of instruments to collaborate with the information management process becomes paramount. In addition to the instruments traditionally used for archiving, such as the description and the archival classification, it is necessary to adopt tools that can complement them, adding precision to the set of descriptors used in the representation of information processes. In this sense, this research establishes discussions aimed at bringing the traditional instruments of archival of controlled vocabularies. It is understood that these instruments act as mediators between the representation and retrieval of information. In this sense, this research establishes discussions aimed at bringing the traditional instruments of archival of controlled vocabularies. It is understood that these instruments act as mediators between the representation and retrieval of information. The objective is therefore to this research, collaborate with the studies on the development of specific vocabularies for files because it was observed that there is still a shortfall in relation to the theme proposed under archival. In addition, it also aimed to analyze the standard of archival description ISAAR (CPF) which deals with the archival authority record description for corporate bodies, persons and families, together with the ISO 25964-2011 standard that deals with the development of controlled vocabularies. Therefore, the following methodological procedures are used, literature review on the proposed theme in Brazilian databases (BRAPCI, Scielo) and international databases (Scopus, LIST), theses and digital dissertations libraries (BDTD) and anal congress (ENANCIB). They were also used ANSI / NIZO Z39.19-2005 standards (R2010) and ISO 25964-2011 for the development of the theoretical components of controlled vocabularies. Regarding the theoretical components of archival, research developed having as parameter the standard ISAAR description (CPF). After the construction of the theoretical framework of the research, analyzed jointly ISO 25964-2011 standard and the standard of ISAAR description (CPF) to make it possible to make a proposal for the development of specific controlled vocabularies for files. The results obtained with the development of this research indicate the need for closer ties between the archival and controlled vocabularies, instruments still little used by the area, but through its standard-setting elements can help towards improving the representation of archival information.

January 2011 (has links)
This work presents the methodology to obtain an environment of interactive simulation with tools to perform analysis of protection systems, coordination studies and analysis post fault. These tools are based on the program for electromagnetic transients EMTP/ATP and in ANSI C programming language used in the free GNU/Linux software platform. The same methodology can be followed to be used on any Windows Operating System that can run EMTP/ATP and the package ATP/MingW. Then, for this, a numerical distance relay was implemented by means of foreign models using C programming language. It also shows how to use COMTRADE files in analysis with EMTP / ATP. Thus it was possible to analyze the behavior of the implemented relay with voltage and current signals of real events as inputs. The trip signals, like the other components of the relay, were tested using a testing reference system of Power System Relaying Committee of PES-IEEE and the signals of real faults of Inter- connected Electric System of Colombia. Finally, a coordination study was made. The results are presented and discussed. This methodology could also be used to develop any component or control element within an electrical system that one may need for a particular use; therefore, compensating the simplicity of the language MODELS with the flexibility and portability of C programming language / Mestre

Průmyslový regulátor PID s autotunerem a vizualizací / Industrial PID controller with autotuning and visualisationVávra, Pavel January 2010 (has links)
This thesis deals with implementation of industrial used controlling block into Power Panel equipment of B&R in integrated development environment Automation Studio 3.0.71. It is PID controller with autotuner and visualization, which allowed bumpless transfer among controlling algorithms and manual control. PID and I-PD controllers with filtering of derivative action and dynamic antiwindup were implemented. Parameters of PID controller is possible to tune with the aid of ultimate gain and ultimate period according rules of Ziegler-Nichols. Ultimate parameters of controlled plant is possible to acquire with the aid of two identification methods, recursive least squares method and relay feedback. Recursive least squares method was implemented with directional forgetting. For relay feedback were used two types of relays: ideal and saturation relay for improving accuracy of searched ultimate values. The whole solution is programmed in ANSI C which Automation Studio supports. Created controller is control with the aid of touchscreen which is integrated in Power Panel. Trends of process values are viewed on the screen too. For comparison adaptive controller by B&R was implemented. This contoller is standardly supplied with Automation Studio in LoopConR library. All created algorithms were first validated on mathematical model of plant and then on real model in laboratory. The first part of thesis deals with theoretic analysis of used methods. The practical realization is described in the second part of this diploma thesis.

Electronic data interchange : an implementation methodologyMeyer, Ettienne 11 1900 (has links)
The purpose of the research is to propose and evaluate a
methodology for implementing EDI to assist organisations in
reaping the anticipated benefits. The research involved the
systematic analysis of the state of the art of EDI and
paradigms of methodologies, to define a model for the EDI
implementation methodology, and to define criteria for
evaluating such a model. The methodology was developed and
modelled utilising the software process model, as adopted by
Boehm (1988) and later duPlessis and van der Walt (1992),
as a framework. Next a synthesis of the assimilated
knowledge and brainstorming of project teams involved in
EDI pilot projects, was used to systematically develop an EDI
implementation methodology. The methodology was evaluated
by utilising it in the implementation of EDI between two
organisations, Computer Equipment Brokers (PTY) and
Marksec (PTY). It was concluded that the methodology was
efficient for implementing EDI. / Computing / M. Sc. (Information Systems)
