Analysis of Social Network Collaboration Using Selected APAN Communications from the Haiti Earthquake of 2010

Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited / On January 12, 2010, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake occurred 16 miles west of the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince. The earthquake and ensuing destruction killed as many as 300,000 persons and displaced as many as 1.5 million more creating a humanitarian crisis and economic disaster of enormous scale. As the earthquake was in close proximity to the U.S. mainland, it was determined that three U.S. agencies would take leading roles: USAID would coordinate and lead the relief effort, the U.S. State Department would handle diplomatic issues and the Department of Defense (DoD) would take the lead on logistics and security issues. One social networking tool used by the DoD and relief organizations to share information and coordinate relief efforts was the All Partners Access Network (APAN). Communications between the various agencies were recorded and include chat logs, blogs and e-mails. A content analysis was conducted to develop insight into the way relief workers used APAN when responding during the Haiti humanitarian assistance / disaster relief (HA/DR) operation. Coding and analyzing the communication data collected during the relief effort provided insight into how individuals and organizations used APAN, a social networking tool, to collaborate during the disaster. Suggestions for improving APAN are discussed.

Objetivamos, desse modo, discutir as propostas socioambientais da APAN, estratégias de mobilização, bem como suas lutas em João Pessoa-PB através das propostas de cidade que estiveram ligadas às ideias de proteção ao Meio Ambiente por intermédio da Educação, culminando em projetos no referido período. Para tanto, contextualizamos a atuação dos líderes: Paula Frassinete e Antônio Augusto. Em contrapartida, se faz necessário problematizar as narrativas de perspectivas contrárias à Associação, à época: políticos locais, donos de construtoras, agentes imobiliários, e empresários; através da justificativa do desenvolvimento econômico do estado e da cidade pessoense. Para conseguir alcançar os objetivos propostos, metodologicamente, utilizamos o cruzamento das fontes jornalísticas como A União, Correio da Paraíba, O Norte; juntamente com entrevistas de membros/ex-membros da APAN. A complexidade do estudo permitiu um diálogo historiográfico da História Ambiental que nos serviu para problematizar a relação de segmentos da sociedade/Estado com a natureza; e a História Social inglesa que ajudou na análise das estratégias de ação dos atores coletivos da APAN. / This dissertation has as its thematic axis the study of the Paraibana Friends of Nature Association (APAN), in a cut from 1978 to 1989, which is justified from the year of the foundation of the entity until the period of the State Constituent. In this way, we aim to discuss the social and environmental proposals of the APAN, strategies for mobilization, as well as their struggles in João Pessoa-PB through the city proposals that were linked to the ideas of protection to the Environment through Education, culminating in projects in the aforementioned period. For that, we contextualize the actions of the leaders: Paula Frassinete and Antônio Augusto. On the other hand, it is necessary to problematize the narratives of perspectives contrary to the Association, at the time: local politicians, owners of builders, real estate agents, and entrepreneurs; Through the justification of the economic development of the state and the city of Pessoa. In order to achieve the proposed objectives, methodologically, we used the cross-referencing of journalistic sources such as. Along with interviews with members / former members of the APAN. The complexity of the study allowed for a historiographic dialogue of Environmental History that served us to problematize the relation of segments of society / State with nature; And the English Social History that helped in the analysis of the strategies of action of the collective actors of the APAN.

Student-generated representations in Algodoo while solving a physics problem / Studentgenererade representationer i Algodoo vid lösningen av en fysikuppgift

Fysiklärare möter ofta den svåra uppgiften att representera abstrakta, väldefinierade egenskaper hos den fysiska världen (så som krafter eller energier) för studenter som går bortom ekvationer, grafer eller diagram. I denna studie tittar jag två fall av universitetsstudenter som löser en fysikalisk uppgift, användandes det digitala programmet Algodoo på en stor pekskärm för att undersöka hur studenter naturligt använder sig av sådan teknologi för att återskapa dessa representationer själva. Jag finner att när studenter skapar scener i Algodoo prioriterar de att behålla en viss mått av likhet från den fysiska världen, vilket går bortom den formella behandlingen av uppgifter som studenter kan ha fått lära sig i fysikundervisningen. Vidare, när studenterna använder sig av fysikaliska ekvationer vid lösandet av problemet, verkar de använda Algodoo som ett facit för att se huruvida deras numeriska lösning, uträknad på en klassisk whiteboard, stämmer. På detta sätt - vilket har föreslagits i tidigare forskning - ser jag hur Algodoo, och liknande digitala lärmiljöer, fungerar som en bro mellan studenternas konceptuella förståelse av den fysiska världen, och den mer formella, matematikbaserade beskrivningen vilket används inomfysiken. / Physics teachers are often faced with the difficult task of representing abstract, formally-defined properties of the physical world (such as forces or energy) for students in a way which goes beyond equations, graphs, and diagrams. In this study, I investigate two cases of university students solving a physics problem while using the digital software, Algodoo, on a large touch screen to examine how students might naturally leverage such technology to create such representations of their own. I find that as student draw scenes in Algodoo, they tend to prioritze a degree of resemblance to the physical world which goes beyond the formal treatment of problems they might have been taught in physics classes. Additionally, as the students recruit physics equation into their solution of the problem, they appear to use Algodoo as a conceptual check for the numerical answer they calculate on the normal whiteboard. In this way - and as has been hypothesized in previous research - I see the potential for Algodoo and similar digital learning environments to act as a bridge between students’ conceptual intuitions of the physical world and the more formal, mathematically-based descriptions used in physics.

本文係以非西方國家而於短期間內躋入開發國家行列之日本為個例,以其行政體系之發展過程及現象為研究主題。 為探討階段性發展或不同類型發展之特徵起見,乃參照政治結構之變動,法制建構之情形及社會經濟發展之進度等因素,區分為五期,分別加以析述。 全文分為七章,前後二章係緒論及結論,第二至第六章即按期論析,凡三十餘萬言。 各章要旨如次。 第一章分為三節,臚陳本文研究之意義及動機,闡釋行政發展與變動、現代化、成長及發展行政之區別,並與政治發展之關係,提出個人試擬之界說。嗣即提出研究之範圍及分析架構等,明示本文研究之準繩。 第二章係以現代化準備期為對象,始於明治維新,迄於一八八五年創立內閣制為止。 第三章係以立憲君主政治及法制確立期為對象,始於內閣制成立,終於一九三一年進入戰時體制前夕。 第四章係以戰時體制之動員期為對象,在維持原憲法體制下,以特別法規配合戰時需要。 第五章係以占領期的對象,此一階段,在盟總管理下改革政治行政體系。 第六章係以自主期行政體系之發展及運行為對象,本期整個行政體系之內容,植根於占領期建立之架構,惟為匡正前期在外力改革下矯枉過正之缺陷,並配全科學管理技術之進步、經濟之高度成長、社會結構之急遽變化及民主意識之滋長,再度引起行政體系之修正,以提高體系之適應能力。 第七章結語,係依據行政發展論所關心之問題,綜述影響日本行政發展過程之動因,及其結構功能調整之現象,並於檢討發展階段之後,歸納為國家興建型、體系完成型、外力改造型、發展型及戰時變則型之各種徵相。 /
