Translating serial relations aspects of the genetic grid in algorithmic designOkabe, Aya 11 1900 (has links)
The notion of seriality describes such relations where each element has a processor. It could be
also understood as a condition of sequential translation and transfonnation. This thesis investi
gates “seriality” in the relationship to architecture and landscape. I begin my investigation with a
criticism of the conventional relationship between architecture and landscape. This relationship is
often static and inert while it should be more dynamic and interactive within the design process.
Reconsidering the relationship between “research” and “design,” my attempt to connect the two
using algorithmic design was instrumental in formulating a new design process.
In this thesis, a new design process has been developed and examined in three different sec
tions: 1) “Theoretical Approach,” 2) “Technical Approach” and 3) “Case Study.”
In the theoretical section, I investigate “rhythm,” which is an underlying series of movements
affecting on architecture physically and fundamentally, in both architecture and landscape. In re
sponse to this theory, I propose a method known as the “Genetic Grid” to manage grid flexibly by
receiving its new identities from “natural conditions.”
In the technical approach, I introduce methods in algorithmic design to manage grid flexibly.
The basic method is called the ‘UVN generator’ which is based on the algorithmic process com
bining the scripting potentiality and flexibility of traditional 3D surface modeling. This technique
contributes to a method to generate the “Genetic Grid.”
In the third section, I examine this “Genetic grid” more closely throughout a proposed design
process called “Condition Linkage.” By embedding “Gene of Place” into architectural elements, I
hope to show an underlying harmonious relationship between architecture and landscape.

This study aims to analyze the limits of representation of architectural photographic images in periodicals within architectural media that shape today& / #8217 / s architectural production. This aim is accomplished in three sections / examining the power of image in architecture / examining architectural media and examining the periodicals& / #8217 / attitudes towards using architectural photography.
A case study is done to uncover the relationship between the photograph and the medium that it takes place on and determine the continuities and discontinuities between the architecture and visual language that is used to & / #8216 / represent& / #8217 / it. Zaha Hadid is selected as she is one of the leading figures in contemporary architectural culture and her projects are widely published in media.
The exemplary periodicals from different cultural domains are selected according to their positions in architectural media. Selected examples are thought to be the representative for each domain. The contextual properties of each domain are outlined and compared through a set of variables. These variables appear to form the ground for the identification of the limits of architectural media within contemporary architectural production. Finally, the case study aims to understand the periodicals& / #8217 / attitudes towards using photographic imagery and finally compare architect& / #8217 / s intentions and design considerations about his projects and the way it is represented in selected periodicals.

The aesthetic principles of soundscape in architectural design and built environmentWang, Keda 30 September 2004 (has links)
This thesis is an attempt to establish a practical way for architectural designers to take advantage of the relationship between soundscape and architectural aesthetics. The whole study aides in providing a structural framework by which architectural designers could incorporate acoustic elements into their design, with aesthetic concerns rather than for practical purpose.
The discussions of soundscape and architecture forms are organized in the order of point, line, plane and space to present my personal observations on the issue. Three graphic systems are developed based on the previous researches of soundscape to visualize the coexistence of sonic identities and visual identities in built environment and how both of them interact to create a multi-sensory experience for visitors. Among the three systems, the Soundscape Map system is particularly introduced to demonstrate some case studies where soundscape elements are successfully employed to strengthen the construction of architectural spaces and forms.
The goal of this research is to open a door for architectural researchers to discover the interconnection between soundscape and architecture, with the hope that the graphic systems introduced could be useful for effective designs with soundscape concerns in built environment.

This research is related to time management and the use of timesheets in
architectural design education. It focuses on the role of Web-based timesheets in the
architectural design studio. The main purpose of the research is to explore whether
Web technology is helpful in increasing compliance with time documentation and can
determine which student behaviors and habits can be observed with Web-based
timesheets in architectural design education.
In time management, using timesheets is a common method to analyze time
usage. However, a traditional timesheet is usually focused on the investigator's (teacher
or employer) perspective. Therefore active participation is hardly expected and data
analysis is not easily offered to participants as useful information in real time. To
overcome the identified problems, Web technology may be useful.
For this research, a pilot software tool was developed and tested in design
studios at several grade levels. Research was focused on empirical observation to
determine which student work patterns and behaviors can be observed with a Webbased
timesheet tool.
The Web-based timesheet tool was successfully fielded in the design studio and the utility of the Web-based timesheet tool was observed. By analyzing the collected
data from the experiments with this Web-based timesheet tool, it was possible to
observe various work patterns and behaviors and to develop insights in the students'
design process. Analysis of log data gave interesting insights into students' work
patterns and design behaviors. Web technology was helpful in increasing the value of
the timesheet in architectural design education.

Exploring the benefits of heterogeneous architectures is becoming more desirable dueto migration from single core to manycore architectural systems. A fast way to explorethe heterogeneity is through an architectural design space exploration (ADSE) tool,which gives the designer the option to explore design alternatives before the actualimplementation. Heracles Designer is an ADSE tool which allows the user to modifylarge aspects of the architecture. At present, Heracles Designer is equipped with asingle type of processing core, a MIPS CPU.We have extended the Heracles System in order to enable the system to model het-erogeneity. Our system is called the Heterogeneous Heracles System (HHS), where adifferent type of processing core, the OpenRISC CPU, is interfaced into the HeraclesSystem. Test programs are executed on both the MIPS and OpenRISC CPUs, whichhave provided promising results. In order to provide the designer with the option tomodify the system architecture without changing the source code, a GUI named AD-SET was created. ADSET provides the designer with the ability to modify the coresettings, memory system configuration and network topology configuration.In the HHS the MIPS core can only execute basic instructions, while the OpenRISCcan execute more advanced instructions, giving a designer the option to explore theeffects of heterogeneity based on the big little architectural concept. The results of ourwork provides an infrastructure on how to integrate different types of processing coresinto the HHS.
