Navigation System Design with Application to the Ares I Crew Launch Vehicle and Space Launch Systems

Oliver, Ted Emerson 11 May 2013 (has links)
For a launch vehicle, the Navigation System is responsible for determining the vehicle state and providing state and state derived information for Guidance and Controls. The accuracy required of the Navigation System by the vehicle is dependent upon the vehicle, vehicle mission, and other consideration, such as impact foot print. NASAs Ares I launch vehicle and SLS are examples of launch vehicles with are/where to employ inertial navigation systems. For an inertial navigation system, the navigation system accuracy is defined by the inertial instrument errors to a degree determined by the method of estimating the initial navigation state. Utilization of GPS aiding greatly reduces the accuracy required in inertial hardware to meet the same accuracy at orbit insertion. For a launch vehicle with lunar bound payload, the navigation accuracy can have large implications on propellant required to correct for state errors during trans-lunar injection.

Nordbrandt, Filippa January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether water protection areas with nearby shooting ranges could be polluted by lead from ammunition or not. The goal was to make a risk assessment of the hazard for human health and the environment. The risk assessment leads to a classification of the shooting ranges. The work of the inventory was done according to the method developed by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, called “Methodology for Inventory of Polluted Areas”. The report contains two types of studies: one literature study and one practical study where interviews were conducted along with a visit to one of the shooting ranges. The results show that one shooting range was considered to be of high risk to the environment because of the high activity that accumulated several tons of lead and the shooting range’s nearness to a water treatment plant. The other two shooting ranges were smaller and not too close to a drinking water source. Therefore the risks were moderate. Conclusions drawn from this report is that water protection areas within nearby shooting ranges are exposed to potential pollution from lead, but the risks aren’t immediate. Probably will time play an important role to prevent lead spreading to the ground water. Because of its attributes, lead has low mobility under normal conditions.  The vertical transport in the ground is considered slow and it could take hundreds of years before it reaches ground water.

Design and numerical simulation of a linear shaped charge separation mechanism for first stage separation of the Ares I launch vehicle

Chambers, Nicholas Roy 02 May 2009 (has links)
This thesis developed a linear shaped charge (LSC) separation mechanism capable of severing the interstage skin for first stage separation of the Ares I launch vehicle. The derived LSC design solution was found using available data on Explosive Technology’s Jetcord LSC and from National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Marshall Space Flight Center’s (MSFC) desired characteristics. Mechanism components are designed after Minuteman III’s separation mechanism for first stage separation and NASA MSFC’s desired characteristics. Mechanism severance is verified through the use of the numerical method capability smoothed particle hydrodynamics that the hydrocode Autodyn offers. Three simulations are conducted to determine feasibility: the first of only the LSC exploding, to numerically validate the explosion process; the second of the LSC penetrating the target, to numerically validate the penetration process and failure mechanisms; and the last of the entire mechanism, to obtain information about the explosion, penetration, failure, and debris generated.

Couder, Manoel 04 June 2004 (has links)
In explosive astrophysical environments such as novae or X-ray bursts, the temperature and the hydrogen density are so large that the time between two reactions involving protons is smaller than the live time of radioactive ions. The cross section of such reactions is an important ingredient of the modeling of such environments. In this work, a new experimental device, allowing the study of resonance strength of (p,gamma) reactions, is presented. This setup, called ARES (Astrophysical REcoil Separator), is first characterized using the study of the well known reaction, 19F(p,gamma)20Ne and more precisely the measurement of the resonance strength of the 635 keV level above the 19F+p threshold. The simulation of this experiment is found in good agreement with the measurement. Then the first resonance strength measurement of a reaction involving radioactive ions beams is presented, i.e. the resonance strength of the 448 keV level above the 19Ne+p threshold in the 19Ne(p,gamma)20Na reaction. An upper limit of 15.2 meV with a confidence level of 90% is obtained. This upper limit improves slightly the results of previous measurements.

Tremblay, Jean-Pascal 09 1900 (has links)
This study talks about the god of war for the ancient Greeks, Ares. The historical community asserts that Ares was a god of second order and unloved by the Greeks of this period. Investigations of historians of XXe century are focus on literary sources and they simply restate, in most cases, the content of them. To gain a new perspective on the god, Ares was studied through the epigraphic documents to corroborate or not our present knowledge. We want to know if the Ares, as presented in the literature, has been the same as that was transmitted in the ancient Greek epigraphy. The answer to this question will help us to see if our current knowledge is right and deepening it. The epigraphic research is done in five steps. First, we determine whether the military side of Ares was also predominant in the inscriptions. Then we pay a specific attention to documents that propose an unloved Ares in the epigraphy. After, we establish some links between the former oath and Ares. Finally, we close the epigraphic study with a geographic approach who allows us to determine two important sites that belong to the god of war, the city of Metropolis and the island of Crete. Through this process we were able to determine the appreciation and the importance, which the Greeks gave to this god, were not unanimous. The resentment of the Greeks varied among individuals and places. We were also able to establish some facts about Ares : his dominant sphere remained the military in the inscriptions; he was a reel god, present, respected and praised; he possessed important places of worship in Lato and Metropolis. In conclusion, we redefine Ares profile, so it would be interesting that a research reviews the literacy sources about him. Furthermore, an evaluation of all the sources (iconographic, archaeological, numismatic, epigraphic etc…) would also be appropriated.

Analýza a řešení systému pro monitoring ISIR a vybraných registrů ARES / Analysis, design and implementation of system for monitoring of ISIR and chosen registers if ARES

Faltis, Jan January 2011 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the analysis of the requirements, design and implementation of the System for monitoring of insolvency register and commercial register from administrative register of economical subjects. The system has an extendable design which allows further sources to be added at a later date to suit the client's needs. The design process is oriented at small business customers and emphasises the need for simplicity and understandability of the marketed solution. System requirements are analysed first, subsequently, several models with decreasing levels of abstraction are formulated and the System is then implemented, according to these models, using several funkcional increments.

The institutional format of the program enabled entities other than public agencies to receive resources for service provision in the settlements, under the coordination of the National Institute of Colonization and Land Reform (INCRA). Since then, many expectations about how to provide assistance appear everyday during the provision of services in the settlements. In the case of Espirito Santo, for instance, the LWM takes on the task of providing technical assistance in settlements where it is present through Cooptraes. With this, the movement brings in the subject of political activism, which becomes the characteristic of the work of the cooperative's technical staff. Thus, this setup program Ates in Esp?rito Santo causes significant changes in the relationship between the actors involved, which can be seen everyday in services, either through dispute over material and symbolic resources, the appearance of new demands or through the actors' own adaptation to the dynamics of the program's execution. The aim of this study was to analyze the position and understanding of the actors on this process, and from this analysis, to examine the limits and possibilities of this experience. For both aims, we interviewed Incra employees, technicians, leaders and LWM settled families, and monitored the work of a technicians team of Cooptraes in four settlements in the northern region of the state. From the analysis of data and from the dialogue with the literature and policy documents of the Program (laws, operating manuals, executive standards, among others) we could identify a field of tensions between the actors, which is directly related to the fact that LMV is the executor of the Program, due to the way the movement operates. From this field research we could identify new practices and meanings in the relationship between the actors involved (especially Incra and MST). On one hand we observe that the the presence of LWM has enhanced the performance of the service (because of its proximity to the target population), on the other hand, we found there are also some continuities in the experience with regard to the history of technical assistance in the settlements, for example, the poor conditions in which the services are provided / Esta disserta??o buscou descrever e refletir sobre a experi?ncia de implementa??o do Programa de Assessoria T?cnica Social e Ambiental ?

RNA-binding proteins mediate anti-inflammatory regulation of vascular disease

Herman, Allison January 2019 (has links)
This work identifies the Fragile X-related protein (FXR1) as a reciprocal regulator of HuR target transcripts in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC). FXR1 was identified as an HuR interacting protein by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The-HuR-FXR1 interaction is abrogated in RNase-treated extracts, indicating that their association is tethered by mRNAs. FXR1 expression is induced in diseased, but not normal arteries. SiRNA knock down of FXR1 increases abundance and stability of inflammatory mRNAs, while overexpression of FXR1 reduces their abundance and stability. RNA-EMSA and RIP demonstrate that FXR1 directly interacts with an ARE and a previously uncharacterized element in the 3’UTR of TNFa. FXR1 expression is increased in VSMC challenged with the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-19, and FXR1 is required for IL-19 reduction of HuR. This suggests FXR1 is an anti-inflammation responsive, HuR counter-regulatory protein that reduces abundance of pro-inflammatory transcripts. Additionally, we observed significantly increased poly-A-Binding protein (PABP) expression localizing to discrete punctate structures in both vascular smooth muscle (VSMC) and endothelial cells (EC) of the aortic arch of Ldlr-/- mice, as compared to WT controls. EIF2α phosphorylation, requisite for SG formation, was also induced by clotrimazole and oxLDL in these cells. Interestingly, VSMCs pre-treated with anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-19 followed by clotrimazole significantly reduced the formation of SGs and eIF2a phosphorylation, suggesting a relationship between inflammation and SG formation in vascular cells. Reduction of SG component G3BP1 by siRNA knockdown significantly reduced stress granule formation and inflammatory gene abundance in hVSMC. Microtubule inhibitors reduced SG formation in hVSMC. These results support the hypothesis that SG formation in atherosclerosis is driven by inflammation, SG may mediate the cellular response to inflammation, and that anti-inflammatory treatment may lessen atherosclerosis progression and plaque formation by reduction of SGs. / Biomedical Sciences

The collapse of dialogue:Intellectuals and politics in the Uruguayan crisis, 1960-1973

Gregory, Stephen William George, Modern Language Studies, UNSW January 1999 (has links)
In the context of the growing political instability and deepening economic crisis in Uruguay during the 1960s and early 1970s, the thesis examines two propositions. The first is that politically informed intellectuals, though disaffected or marginalised, will integrate themselves into the political mainstream if circumstances demand and a suitable vehicle allows them to participate usefully in the political process. The second is that, in the Uruguayan case, an expanded notion of dialogue is essential in analysing how this was accomplished, partly because the idea of dialogue was a necessary part of how they worked together and communicated with their public, and partly because dialogue was seen as a crucial element in reforming the nation and as the basis of the relationship between the political party that was to be the agent of such reform and its potential constituency. The thesis begins by examining how the so-called 1945 and 1960s generations overcame intergenerational squabbles and worked together, with the help of an expanding publishing industry, to create a public for their meditations on Uruguay's problems. Then, after briefly outlining the importance of dialogue to the essay as a genre and its role in developing national identity in Latin America, the study examines essays on the state of Uruguay by four major writers in the 1960s: Roberto Ares Pons, Alberto Methol Ferr??, Carlos Maggi and Washington Lockhart. The thesis then traces the intelligentsia's role in the several attempts to heal the rifts within the Uruguayan left and in the formation of the centre left coalition, the Frente Amplio, in 1971, to show how the notion of dialogue was incorporated into its structure, mode of operation and political program. The final section, a case study of Mario Benedetti's political activities and propagandist essays of 1971-1973, examines the contradictions of working as a committed intellectual when the very conditions necessary for intellectual life are breaking down. The thesis concludes that the resurrection of the nation as a site for dialogue with and among all members of society, a project in which the intelligentsia had enthusiastically participated, foundered because drastic political polarisation permitted only one militarist and monologic solution.
