Assessing Perceived Marriage Education Needs and Interests of Latino Individuals in Utah County, Utah

Snyder, Iliana 21 December 2006 (has links) (PDF)
This study utilized focus groups to assess the perceived needs and interests for marriage education among single and married Latino individuals residing in Utah County, Utah as well as the identification of common themes and differences for this population. Male and female groups at various points in the marital developmental life stage were studied including high school students (15-18 years of age), single never married young adults (19-30 years of age), committed (engaged or cohabiting) adults, married persons recently transitioning to parenting, and married people with children. The sample consisted of 10 groups, 5 female and 5 male. In addition, a professional group consisting of professionals who are in daily contact with the Latino population also participated (N=12). A total of 53 Latino individuals and 12 professionals were interviewed in the focus groups. The participants were asked 14 open-ended questions to assess various elements of marriage education including content, cost, convenient locations, sources of information, perceived barriers to getting services as well as strategies on how to get people involved in marriage education programs. The data from the focus groups were analyzed using inductive qualitative methods. The findings showed that most females were concerned about domestic violence and infidelity as topics in marriage education while males were more concerned about having financial stability, improving communication skills and increase their parenting skills. These results support the importance of conducting focus groups as a way to assess marriage education needs and interests of the Latino population. Limitations for future research are discussed, implications for marriage education programming for Latino couples as well as implications for marriage and family therapists.

Posuzování věrohodnosti výpovědi / Measuring the credibility of statement

Kvasničková, Barbora January 2013 (has links)
The aim of thesis is to evaluate the current practice of assessing the credibility of testimony in criminal proceedings and reflect on its current issues. In particular, it is necessary to resolve the question of the extent to the competence of an expert-psychologist in assessing process and the establishment of basic criteria according to which the experts proceed. I have chosen this topic because it's connecting criminal law and psychology which is important for society and a highly discussed in this time. Assessing the credibility is one of usual requests for expert psychologists from investigative, prosecuting and adjudicating bodies and it is also the most common, but often the most difficult part of psychological expertise. The thesis is composed of four chapters. The first chapter deals with the history of assessing the credibility. The second chapter describes the psychological expertise in criminal proceedings in our country and consists of four parts dealing with experts, expertise and evidence and evaluation of evidence in criminal procedure. The third chapter looks at assessing the credibility as a problem of professionals and it contains four parts. The first part defines the basis for assessing the credibility, the second part defines fundamental terms. The third part describes verbal and...

Managing Security Objectives for Effective Organizational Performance Information Security Management

Gutta, Ramamohan 01 January 2019 (has links)
Information is a significant asset to organizations, and a data breach from a cyberattack harms reputations and may result in a massive financial loss. Many senior managers lack the competencies to implement an enterprise risk management system and align organizational resources such as people, processes, and technology to prevent cyberattacks on enterprise assets. The purpose of this Delphi study was to explore how the managerial competencies for information security and risk management senior managers help in managing security objectives and practices to mitigate security risks. The National Institute of Standards and Technology framework served as the foundation for this study. The sample was made up of 12 information security practitioners, information security experts, and managers responsible for the enterprise information security management. Participants were from Fortune 500 companies in the United States. Selection was based on their level of experience and knowledge of the topic being studied. Data were collected using a 3 round Delphi study of 12 experts in information security and risk management. Statistical analysis was performed on the collected data during a 3 round Delphi study. The mean, standard deviation, majority agreement, and ranges were used to determine the final concensus for this research study. Findings of this study included the need for managerial support, risk management strategies, and developling the managerial and technical talent to mitigate and respond to cyberattacks. Findings may result in a positive social change by providing information that helps managers to reduce the number of data breaches from cyberattacks, which benefits companies, employees, and customers.

An examination of near-graduates' computer self-efficacy in light of business employers' expectations

Gibbs, S. F. January 2009 (has links)
The use of computers has become part of every day life. The high prevalence of computer use may lead employers to assume university graduates will have good computing skills. Such assumptions may be the reason that employers use broad terms to advertise the computing tasks required for graduate-level positions. This thesis investigates how well the expectations of employers match the perceptions of near-graduates about their computer skills. Four graduate-level positions were identified from advertisements placed in order to recruit graduates. The employers who placed these advertisements were surveyed by interview and questionnaire. Twenty-one students about to graduate from a university commerce programme were also interviewed and surveyed. It was found that the wording of the advertisements did not satisfactorily portray the requirements and intentions of the employers. It was also found that skills the near-graduates perceived they possessed frequently did not meet the expectations of employers. Results also show that the near-graduates did not fully understand which computing skills would be expected in the workplace. This study highlights implications for three groups: employers, graduates and educators.

The validation of a rating scale for the assessment of compositions in ESL / K. Hattingh

Hattingh, Karien January 2009 (has links)
This study aimed to develop and validate a rating scale for assessing English First Additional Language essays at Grade 12 level for the final National Senior Certificate examination. The importance of writing as a communicative skill is emphasised with the re-introduction of writing as Paper 3 of the English First Additional Language examination at the end of Grade 12 in South Africa. No empirical evidence, however, is available to support claims of validity for the current rating scale. The literature on the concept of validity and the process of validation was surveyed. Theoretical models and validation frameworks were evaluated to establish a theoretical base for the development and validation of a rating scale for assessing writing. The adopted framework was used to evaluate the adequacy of the current rating scale used for assessing Grade 12 writing in South Africa. The current scale was evaluated in terms of the degree to which it offers an appropriate means of assessing Grade 12 Level essay writing while adhering to requirements of the National Curriculum Statement. It was found lacking and the need for a new, validated rating scale was established. Various approaches to scale development were considered in consideration of factors that impact scores directly, viz. the type of rating scale, rater characteristics, scoring procedures and rater training. A new scale was developed and validated following an empirical procedure comprising four phases. The empirical process was based on an analysis of actual performances of Grade 12 English learner writing. A combination of quantitative and qualitative methods was used in each of the four phases to ensure the validity of the instrument. The outcome of this project was an empirically developed and validated multiple trait rating scale to assess Grade 12 essay writing. The proposed scale distinguishes five criteria assessed by means of a seven-point scale. / Thesis (Ph.D. (English))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2009.

Tirico, Patricia Passarelli [UNIFESP] 27 February 2009 (has links) (PDF)
Made available in DSpace on 2015-07-22T20:50:46Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2009-02-27 / Objetivo: fazer uma revisão sistemática dos estudos que avaliam qualidade de vida (QV) em pessoas com transtornos alimentares (TA). Método: foram realizadas buscas bibliográficas em seis bases de dados (MEDLINE, EMBASE, LILACS, PSYCINFO, Cochrane Depression, Anxiety and Neurosis Group Database Trials e Cochrane Library) e buscas manuais em duas revistas (The International Journal of Eating Disorders e Quality of Life Research: An International Journal of Quality of Life Aspects of Treatment, Care and Rehabilitation), abrangendo o período de janeiro/1975 até junho/2008. / Purpose: To conduct a systematic review evaluating eating disorders (ED) quality of life studies. Methods: Bibliographic searches were made on six eletronic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, LILACS, PSYCINFO, Cochrane Depression, Anxiety and Neurosis Group Database Trials, e Cochrane Library), and manual searches were performed on two journals (The International Journal of Eating Disorders, and Quality of Life Research: An International Journal of Quality of Life Aspects of Treatment, Care and Rehabilitation), concerning to the period of january/1975 to june/2008. All eating disorders quality of life studies assessed through validated measures, generic or specific to ED, were included in this review. Studies with clinical samples and systematic reviews were evaluated and classified based on “NHMRC additional levels of evidence and grades for recommendations STAGE 2 CONSULTATION” criteria. Studies with populational samples were evaluated based on Evidenced-Based Mental Health (EBMH) prevalence guideline. Qualitative studies were evaluated based on Evidence-Based Medicine Working Group criteria for qualitative research, and studies validating specific quality of life measures for ED patients were evaluated based on Scientific Advisory Committee of the Medical Outcomes Trust criteria. Results: A total of 29.537 articles were identified. Most of them were excluded by title and 2.758 abstracts were read more carefully. Next, 173 articles were analyzed, providing the inclusion of 41 articles in this review. Discussion: Overall, the studies demonstrate impairment on eating disorders patients quality of life. The evaluation of binge eating disorder (BED) subjects revealed concordance between the results. Little evidence and discussion were observed to bulimia nervosa (BN) subjects, and the evaluation of anorexia nervosa (AN) subjects request caution. Most studies used a generic instrument to evaluate quality of life in this population and four specific eating disorders quality of life instrument were developed, being at validation phase. Conclusion: In spite of a growing interest on the theme and increasing number of research on eating disorders quality of life, the results of this review denote a preponderance of crosssectional studies, small samples sizes, populational studies with no control of confounding variables and few studies about validation of specific eating disorders quality of life instruments, which limits the generalization of the findings. Therefore, researches considering these aspects are necessary to allow a better drawing of the problem and its evaluation.

Initially, the evolution of the Brazilian electric power industry is discussed, with emphasis on the role played by the companies making up the so-called ¿dam industry¿, the recent re-organization of the Brazilian power sector; and the social changes that have been occurring in the regions the hydro power plants have been implemented, or are planned to be built. Next, some selected cases of hydro power plants in other countries were studied, with special attention for the binational Yacyretá Hydro Power Plant, in the Paraná river, border between Argentina and Paraguay. For the Brazilian study-cases, some dams formed between 2003 and 2006 were selected; together with a Small Hydro Power Plant named Mosquitão, located at the river Caiapó, in the State of Goiás, and some projects included in the auctions of hydro power plant concessions carried out by the Brazilian power sector¿s independent regulatory agency (ANEEL) in the years 2005 and 2006. A comparative analysis of these cases revealed that the ¿dam industry¿ does not deal fairly with the social problems related to the hydro power plants. The thesis is concluded showing the increasing difficulties faced by the government and the ¿dam industry¿ to build new hydro power plants in the country, despite all their efforts / Mestrado / Mestre em Planejamento de Sistemas Energéticos
