Sustainable Development in Higher Education Curriculum¡ÐA Comparison between AACSB and ABET

Since the trend of uprising awareness of sustainability in which strives for the balance of environmental protection, economic growth as well as social concern is mentioned and further discussed in important events before and slowly put into enforcement, neither industry nor education can ignore from this trend. This paper will contribute to address the important issues: 1. Discussing the background of sustainability issues from the important historical events and scholars points of view. 2. Endeavoring in discovering the current efforts made of sustainability by industries and educational institutes 3. Understanding sustainability education status applied in business and engineering schools in two accredited systems AACSB (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business), and ABET(Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) in United States by analyzing the sustainability-related courses difference among academic backgrounds (accredited systems), regions, school ranking, undergraduate and graduate levels, topics as well as teaching methods. 4. Comparing the result of web-based survey between AACSB 460 accredited business school and ABET 382 engineering schools as well as to the similar sustainability-related course in previous studies based on questionnaire or web-based surveys. The results are as follows: 1. ABET accredited engineering school shows much more aggressiveness on providing sustainability-related courses, especially in west region. 2. Our web content analysis in both AACSB and ABET have lower result than questionnaire survey studies before. 3. Top 100 ranked school in both colleges have more than twice related course; however, AACSB places related courses on graduate level with compulsory and ABET tends to put on undergraduate level with electives. 4. Regarding to the sustainability issues, AACSB focus moral thinking &culture diversity while ABET endeavors in management of natural resource 5. Both colleges adopt most of traditional teaching methods: 61 % of AACSB have case study and discussion and 80 % of ABET use textbooks and assignments At the end, this study will apply the results to business practitioners, enables them have an understanding about their recruited professionals and students who have received which kinds of related subjects and issues taught in the school. For educators, the study provides them the comparisons in leading universities to examine their existing program for sustainability so as to enrich the cross-institutional academic exchanges.

The population was 85 women who participated in a Adult Basic Education and Training programme in Eersterivier in the Cape Peninsula area a questionnaire was used to collect demographic information of the participants Data was analysed by thematic analysis and coded, categorised and discussed according to the aim and objectives of the study in relation to previous studies The main findings were why exploring the existing literacy practice women were depended on others for literacy assistance, which made them avoid literacy events and become vulnerable in this process to cope with the everyday life.</p>

African women's experience of their multiple role involvement while engaged with ABET

M.Ed. / The aim of this research was to explore African women's experience of their multiple role involvement while engaged in Adult Education and Training (ABET) programmes at the ABET centre in the Gauteng Province. I argue that African women in ABET have different experiences of their multiple roles to their Western counterparts, and for this reason, ABET providers should understand the experiences, needs and characteristics of African women in ABET in order to design flexible courses and give effective learner support. The research question that guided the research reported on in this essay is: What are the experiences of African women of their multiple role involvement while engaged in ABET? In the light of the above, qualitative research was conducted using personal interviews for data collection. Eight participants were purposefully selected by maximum variation sampling to represent the widest possible range of experience. They were interviewed in order to arrive at a deeper understanding of these experiences. The data gathered were then analysed and findings written up. The findings of this research indicate that rural African women have to balance the role of learner with that of worker, home maker, wife, mother, and communal worker. In addition, the entrenched system of patriarchy in many African societies denies rural women any form of personal support structure with women often encountering direct opposition to their attempts at selfimprovement. It is my contention that ABET programmes are not flexible enough to accommodate these multiple roles. The learner's responses in the interviews contain important suggestions on how to improve ABET programmes. The study concludes with the recommendation for ABET programmes.

Adult Basic Education and training on literacy : case study of Laaste Hoop Public Adult Learning Centre in Limpopo Province

(Community and Continuing Education)) -- University of Limpopo, 2017. / This study drew attention to the strategic necessity of the Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) programme in equipping historically disadvantaged communities with basic numeracy, reading and writing skills. The Department of Basic Education regards the ABET programme as the vehicle on which individuals historically excluded from formal schooling life access basic education and skills that help them to be active agents of socio-economic change in their communities. Whilst the ABET programme’s broad objectives have been properly conceptualised and institutionalised, the central concern of this study is that little effort may have been invested by the Department of Basic Education to qualitatively assess the state of ABET programmes in rural-based Public Adult Learning Centres (PALCs) like Laaste Hoop. In order to ensure the Department of Basic Education recoup best returns from every effort invested in the ABET programme at Laaste Hoop PALC such an assessment is imperative. This study employed the qualitative method and a case study design to examine the state of the ABET programme offered at Laaste Hoop PALC. Using the purposive sampling method, ten participants comprising one member of the centre’s Governing Body, six learners, the centre manager and two facilitators were selected to participate in the study. The main finding of this study is that the Laaste Hoop PALC is struggling to effectively fulfil its broad mandate due to poor budgetary support from the v Department of Basic Education. The study found that the Laaste Hoop PALC is generally in a state of neglect as the infrastructure is in an advanced state of dilapidation. The main recommendation of the study is that the Department of Basic Education needs to launch a targeted fundraising campaign in order to improve the operating and financial leverage of the centre. The information needs of outcomes-based adult basic education and training programmes for pre-literate learners : a case study of Damonsville and Onverwacht communities

This thesis investigates both the information needs of the identified communities of Damonsville and Onverwacht and the contents of the selected Afrikaans literacy ABET programmes in order to determine whether the contents addresses the identified information needs. Educators need to develop material that is relevant and appropriate, for example, content that addresses the information needs of the targeted learners. The results of this content analysis were aligned with the information needs assessments carried out in the communities of Onverwacht and Damonsville. These two communities were chosen because of their close proximity to Pretoria and the high level of illiteracy prevailing in these two mainly Afrikaans-speaking communities. Both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies were used in the study. Two communities of Damonsville and Onverwacht were chosen as data collection sites so as to reveal their information needs through the use of questionnaires. The data collected was analysed by using descriptive and statistical tabulation for quantitative and content analysis methods and then compared. The main research question of the study is, “What are the information needs of the Afrikaans pre-literate adult learners of both Damonsville and Onverwacht communities and how can the content of adult literacy training material be tailored to match the information requirements of the identified communities?”. From the data derived from empirical study conducted, a list of activities which serve as information needs of both communities was compiled and could then be used when designing instructional tutorials so as that the content could match the specified needs of the identified communities. From the content analysis of the three literacy programmes, findings have indicated that there exist no correlation between the information needs of the identified communities and the contents of the literacy programmes. The researcher argues this shortcoming as a major implication to instructional design. Based on the findings of a comparison between the content of the Afrikaans literacy programmes and the information needs of the people in Onverwacht and Damonsville, a learning programme in the form of two lesson plans were compiled in which the identified information needs of the learners determined the content. Enterprise Business Alignment Using Quality Function Deployment, Multivariate Data Analysis And Business Modeling Tools

This dissertation proposes two novel ideas to enhance the business strategy alignment to customer needs. The proposed business alignment clock is a new illustration to the relationships between customer requirements, business strategies, capabilities and processes. To line up the clock and reach the needed alignment for the enterprise, a proposed clock mechanism is introduced. The mechanism integrates the Enterprise Business Architecture (EBA) with the House of Quality (HoQ). The relationship matrix inside the body of the house is defined using multivariate data analysis techniques to accurately measure the strength of the relationships rather than defining them subjectively. A statistical tool, multivariate data analysis, can be used to overcome the ambiguity in quantifying the relationships in the house of quality matrix. The framework is proposed in the basic conceptual model context of the EBA showing different levels of the enterprise architecture; the goals, the capabilities and the value stream architecture components. In the proposed framework, the goals and the capabilities are inputs to two houses of quality, in which the alignment between customer needs and business goals, and the alignment between business goals and capabilities are checked in the first house and the second house, respectively. The alignment between the business capabilities and the architecture components (workflows, events and environment) is checked in a third HoQ using the performance indicators of the value stream architecture components, which may result in infrastructure expansion, software development or process improvement to reach the needed alignment by the enterprise. The value of the model was demonstrated using the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) process at the Industrial Engineering and Management Systems department at the University of Central Florida. The assessment of ABET criteria involves an evaluation of the extent to which the program outcomes are being achieved and results in decisions and actions to improve the Industrial Engineering program at the University of Central Florida. The proposed framework increases the accuracy of measuring the extent to which the program learning outcomes have been achieved at the department. The process of continuous alignment between the educational objectives and customer needs becomes more vital by the rapid change of customer requirements that are obtained from both internal and external constituents (students, faculty, alumni, and employers in the first place).
