Del Vecchio, Fabricio Boscolo 06 January 2005 (has links)
Orientador: Aguinaldo Gonçalves / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Educação Fisica / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-04T16:11:40Z (GMT). A coordenação motora se mostrou relevante para a Vitalidade e a capacidade de equilíbrio apresenta relação negativa com alguns domínios do componente mental / Abstract: One of the aggressions to human biology, which challenges health-disease relationship within labor collective world, is represented by metallic mercury contamination in our environment. It is related to vapors breathing, small amounts intake or even to dermal contact. The purpose of this study is to explore the research line development, which is pioneer in our environment of systematic physical activity application for the rehabilitation of occupationally mercury-intoxicated workers in São Paulo Metropolitan Region ¿ SP. It was specifically related to the assessment of possible changes within this population, as to quality of life and physical capabilities. A research group of Hg-intoxicated urban-industrial workers in São Paulo Metropolitan Region, constituted by 14 women and 33 men, being 21 to 57 years old, with an average age of 41.7, was created. Patients clinical complains have been noted, through a non-indicative directed request, during a medical examination; quality of life (QL) questionnaire, SF36, was applied, and muscular strength assessments have been carried out, generating motor index (MI), motor coordination of upper and lower members and static and dynamic equilibrium. Results obtained are indicated in the descriptive plan, through frequency distribution with centering-feature and position measures; inferences were tested by Q-square essay and Spearman linear correlation. For Multiple Regression, the analysis of dependent variables absolute values was carried out (SF 36 fields), taking into account the independent ones, age, sex, muscular strength, motor coordination and equilibrium. p<0,05 was adopted as significance level. It can be remarked that QL subjective perception is lower than for other population groups to which referred instrument has been applied, mainly coronary patients and Gulf Was veterans. Although situations presenting a relevant functional deficit have occurred, they were not systematically found in this investigation. Generally, it can be pointed out that participants do not present outstanding nervous damages et consequent muscular innervations, they show a good strength amount for tests performed and MI of 96; as to sex differences in this essay, men presented a significantly higher performance, it was also remarked that older people show lower scores during tests and lower MI. Concerning motor coordination, low performance was only identified in three of 36 essays adopted, best performance level being followed in 85.63% of the cases. As to equilibrium, deficiencies are present in nine of 13 assessments; nevertheless 95.42% of answers are with normal parameters. A strong interaction between muscular strength and fields proposed by SF36 could also be noticed, especially for males. Motor coordination was relevant for Vitality and equilibrium capability presents a negative relation with some mental component fields / Mestrado / Ciencia do Desporto / Mestre em Educação Física

The experiential world of the school beginner with chronic otitis media

Jackson, Moira Ann 28 August 2012 (has links)
M. Ed. / By virtue of the nature of the affliction, the auditory world of Chronic Otitis Media (COM) children is likely to be one of frequent insecurity and confusion. Fluctuations of volume, tone and clarity of sound must be very unsettling for young language learners. If the significant others in their lives are not fully informed about the nature, effects and potential impact of the illness on the developmental processes of the sufferer, then psychological, social and scholastic manifestations of the inevitable inner confusion will probably result:In South Africa today, fewer professional resources are available to meet the needs of a greater number of people. One creative solution to this problem could be the growing trend away from a predominantly one-to-one approach towards a consultative function for Educational Psychologists, with relevant psychometric and therapeutic intervention. With this in mind, the purpose of this study is to explore and illuminate the experiential world of the school beginner who suffers from COM to parents and teachers alike. With the growing emphasis on the integrated, whole language approach to teaching and learning in many South African schools, the focus of this study is on how the school beginner with chronic Otitis Media experiences his new learner status. The initial aim of the exercise is to expose this experience and examine it within the context of sound theory. Further, the study is intended to be the first, small step in a process intended ultimately to benefit the wider population of COM afflicted learners by raising new awareness and understanding of their special needs in their teachers. The theoretical foundation that undergirds this study incorporates a multidisciplinary review of the literature encompassing the anatomical structure of the ear, the mechanical, physiological and neuro-sensori process of sound reception and processing (which constitutes hearing), and the normal, integrated developmental stages of the infant. This foundation is established with the aim of providing support and structure for the research questions posed. The nature of the research problem under investigation dictates the type of research design used. The Case Study was sek licted as possessing the most appropriate characteristics and methods of data collection for the planned research process. The samples selected for the study complied with specified criteria relating to the onset, intensity and chronicity of Otitis Media experienced during infa ncy. Cases were to be six to seven years of age and in the beginning stages of their formal learning process. The study falls within the qualitative research paradigm and is presented as a description and discussion of the experiential world of the school beginner with chronic Otitis Media. Where `appropriate, a tentative explanation of outcomes is given and a behavioural profile compiled for discussion with teachers, and with further exploration in mind at some future time

Die optimalisering van skoolbegin

Grové, Magdalena Catherina 10 February 2014 (has links)
D.Ed (Educational Psychology) / It is a well known fact that, especially in the developed and industrialised countries the child can not but attain adulthood and independence via the school and school learning. The child's progress at school depends largely on his readiness to learn. Because it is no longer acceptable for the school to receive school beginners with a take-it or leave-it attitude and practice, the Transvaal Education Department adopted the policy that all school beginners be subjected to a school readiness programme to ensure that they will in fact profit from formal learning. Because application of the prescribed procedures which underlies all these programmes had not yet been investigated empirically, an intensive evaluation was conducted in 1977 at the RAU. The findings indicated certain deficiencies in the existing programme. It appeared, for example, that differentiation was not applied sufficiently and that more emphasis should be laid on certain aspects of cognitive development. An attempt was therefore made in this study to redesign the existing programme. Firstly it was necessary to arrive at a pedagogical view of school entrance which implied a close examination of the school beginner's development and learning, whi~h also emphasised the importance of the teacher's becoming acquainted with the child's level op development on school entry as well as with its learning in order to know how, where and how much she can, may and ought to intervene in the child's development and learning.

Improving the reading abililties of grade 9 learners: a classroom-based inquiry: how do I facilitate improvement in the reading abilities of my Grade 9 learners?

Didloft, Virginia Charmaine January 2008 (has links)
This thesis is a narrative account of how I have transformed my learning and teaching strategies for Grade 9 learners, generating my own living theory of teaching within a social context with the aim of enabling my learners to construct their own knowledge. My value-embedded practice is reflected in the values I attach to equality, inclusivity, social justice and basic human rights. These embodied values are also a reflection of my commitment to my Christian values which encompass my entire existence and have become the living standards by which I judge the quality of my research. My classroom-based action research methodology is a living transformational process which heralds a change for a more just practice and the inclusion and recognition of the individual. My findings about my learners’ and my own learning offer new conceptualisations about the capacity of my learners to learn in their own unique ways and according to their own potential. I am claiming that the significance of my research is grounded in my ability to demonstrate how I can unleash the untapped potential of learners failing to attain the desired outcomes. I show them how to learn confidently and successfully within a social context using prior knowledge, scaffolding and motivation as teaching and learning tools. This has potential inspiration for new forms of practice and theory in aiming to improve learners’ potential. A significant feature of my account is how my Christian values have been translated into my critical epistemological standards of judgement, and the development of a living theory of practice that enables me to account for educational influences in my learners’ and my own learning.

Errors in Looping and Assignment by Novice Assembly Language Programmers

Melkus, Lovie Ann Jeffrey 12 1900 (has links)
The problem with which this investigation is concerned is an analysis of errors in looping and assignment made by novice assembly language computer programmers. This analysis is made after subjects write three computer programs. The verbal definition of the problem for each program specifies, without naming, either a for, while, or repeat looping structure. The purposes of the study are the following; to determine whether using the appropriate looping structure is related to writing a correct program; to determine the incidence of assignment errors in incorrect programs; to determine the degree of relationship between mathematical aptitude, and the type of assignment errors made; to determine the degree of relationship between use of the appropriate looping structure and mathematical, verbal, and scholastic aptitude; to determine the degree of relationship between gender and use of the appropriate looping structure, and to determine the degree of relationship between gender and the number of assignment errors.

The Relationship of Selected Non-School Variables to the Decline of Scholastic Aptitude Test Scores

Khorrami, Kamal 12 1900 (has links)
The purposes of this study were to investigate the impact of the following factors on the decline of average SAT scores between 1952 and 1981: (1) changes in composition of population of the SAT takers after 1963, (2) aggregate technological and social changes related to the scores in the years following 1970, and (3) selected economic factors in the period 1952 through 1981. Two models were used to test the hypotheses of this study. The dependent variables of each model were the SAT Verbal and Math scores. The independent variables of the study were two intervention variables that represented changes following 1963 and after 1970. Also, three economic variables were subjected to principal component analysis. These were changes in unemployment, Consumer Price Index (CPI), and real Gross National Product (GNP). The results were two factors: (1) Economic Instability (combination of unemployment and CPI), and (2) Economic Growth. These two factors were used as independent variables in addition to the interventions of 1963 and 1970. The interaction of these variables were calculated. The Box-Jenkins technique was used to generate residuals which were white noise (free from the confounding of autoregression, moving average, and trend or stochastic drift). Finally, hierarchical multilinear regression technique was used to analyze the white noise data of the study.

Investigating Grade 3 learners’ changing mathematical proficiency in a maths club programme focused on number sense progression

Hebe, Gasenakeletso Ennie January 2018 (has links)
Recent international reports, for example TIMSS (2011 & 2015), point to serious challenges in South African learner performance in Mathematics and Science. Of greatest concern is that research findings (e.g. Graven, Venkat, Westaway and Tshesane 2013) suggest that many South African learners show signs of mathematical knowledge gaps in the lower grades. Hence, there is a need to address challenges of this nature very early in Foundation Phase. This study was undertaken with a view to contribute towards addressing mathematical challenges encountered by learners in Foundation Phase This empirical enquiry was undertaken under the auspices of the South African Numeracy Chair Project (SANCP) at Rhodes University whose mission is to develop sustainable ways of improving quality teaching and learning of Mathematics in South Africa. A relatively new SANCP programme called Pushing for Progression (PfP) run as part of the after-school Maths Clubs to develop the number sense and four Operations in learners was used to achieve the research aims of this study. Research participants were drawn from the Maths Clubs established by the researcher in a small rural town of Ottosdal in the North West Province of South Africa. This Study is grounded on the Vygotskian perspective and uses the interpretivist qualitative research method for data collection and analysis. Sampling was done opportunistically by enlisting participants (12 teachers and 117 learners) on the basis of their availability and willingness to participate. Pre- and post-assessment of learners’ proficiency on the four Basic Operations was conducted at the beginning and at the end of the research project, respectively. This was done to determine the impact of the project on learner performance. Data analysis was done thematically and through the comparison of learner results of the pre- and post-assessment. The findings point to the effectiveness of the PfP Programme in learner performance. This can be deduced from improved scores between pre- and post-assessment and the observations made by participant-teachers on their respective club learners’ mathematical proficiencies. Accordingly, based on the findings, this study recommends, inter alia, that since the PfP programme is still in its early stages, similar research be conducted elsewhere. Additionally, the Department of Basic Education could consider exploring the PfP programme as one of several other strategies to help improve learner proficiency in Mathematics.

Major Spelling Deficiencies Among Collegiate Business Students

Benson, Melba W. 08 1900 (has links)
The problem of this study was an analysis of major spelling deficiencies among collegiate business students. The purposes were as follows: (1) to develop a diagnostic instrument that will measure spelling deficiencies; and (2) to make recommendations regarding the preparation of materials that will assist students in overcoming these deficiencies. Written assignments prepared by collegiate Business Communication students were examined for spelling errors. Errors were then classified into the following categories: (1) words with "ie" and "ei" ; (2) final "e"; (3) final consonant rule; (4) final "y"; (5) confusion over vowel sounds; (6) pronunciation problems; (7) sound-alikes; (8) plurals; (9) apostrophes; (10) omissions; (11) additions and repetitions; (12) substitutions; (13) demons; and (14) miscellaneous. Percentages of total errors served as a guideline for preparation of a Table of Specifications, and a Spelling Diagnostic Test was developed. Validity of the instrument was determined by a panel of experts. The test was then administered to 214 collegiate business students, and a reliability coefficient of .83 was determined using the split-half method.
