Orientador: Lourenço Sbragia Neto / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Ciencias Medicas / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-07T00:05:25Z (GMT). This study was carried out with 47 patients in order to assess the clinical evaluation of congenital torticollis and compare the effectiveness of physiotherapy as treatment. The applied method was a retrospective analysis of the clinical record of the patients where the picked up information referred to: maternal antecedents like age, birth type and being prime or multi birth; personal antecedents like sex, birth date, age at diagnosis, being prime birth, race and associated diseases, clinical findings like eyes defects, facial hemihypoplasia, neck rotation, presence of sternocleidomastoid tumor, tumor position in the neck and evolutive complications and the data referred to physiotherapy treatment like first consultation date (Dl), last consultation date (DU), begin of improvement date (DM), intensive treatment, minimal treatment, necessity of surgical intervention, time of treatment and the cure. The classification of the treatment was defined in two different times, according to the frequency of physiotherapy sessions, daily as intensive treatment and once a week as minimal. The tests used for statistical analysis were the Chi squared and the Fisher exact, with p < 0,05 as significant value. As result, it can be observed that the clinical evolution was satisfactory in both groups of treatment and all newborns who adopted the any treatment obtained the cure. Therefore, it can be concluded that the physiotherapy treatment is recommended to the children with TC, even in the cases where it was not possible the daily treatment / Mestrado / Pesquisa Experimental / Mestre em Cirurgia

Studium signálních drah modulujících mnohočetnou lékovou rezistenci / The study of signaling pathways that modulate multidrug resistance

Dvořák, Pavel January 2017 (has links)
The study of signaling pathways that modulate multidrug resistance The theme of cancer cell resistance to anti-cancer drugs including the common mechanisms of resistance development and the theory of cancer stem cells was introduced in the Introduction to the doctoral thesis. The theoretical part was focused more deeply on the two topics - the role of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transport proteins and chromosomal abnormalities in the development of cancer chemoresistance. The possible therapeutic potential for the treatment of cancer was stressed for both topics. The Results were composed of the commentaries on the five published works, which the author of the thesis conducted as the main author. The first work brought the evidence supporting the hypothesis of the existence of ABC gene expression profiles (signatures), which are common to multiple types of tumors and are associated with significant clinical consequences. These general ABC gene expression profiles could possibly form a new hallmark of cancer. The second work studied more closely a group of acute myeloid leukemia patients, who did not achieve complete cytogenetic remission after two attempts to maintain remission of the malignant disease. The new entity, consisting of patients with the translocation t(2;11)(p21;q23) without the...

Determination of Normal or Abnormal Gait Using a Two-Dimensional Video Camera

Smith, Benjamin Andrew 19 June 2007 (has links)
The extraction and analysis of human gait characteristics using image sequences and the subsequent classification of these characteristics are currently an intense area of research. Recently, the focus of this research area has turned to the realm of computer vision as an unobtrusive way of performing this analysis. With such systems becoming more common, a gait analysis system that will quickly and accurately determine if a subject is walking normally becomes more valuable. Such a system could be used as a preprocessing step in a more sophisticated gait analysis system or could be used for rehabilitation purposes. In this thesis a system is proposed which utilizes a novel fusion of spatial computer vision operations as well as motion in order to accurately and efficiently determine if a subject moving through a scene is walking normally or abnormally. Specifically this system will yield a classification of the type of motion being observed, whether it is a human walking normally or some other kind of motion taking place within the frame. Experimental results will show that the system provides accurate detection of normal walking and can distinguish abnormalities as subtle as limping or walking with a straight leg reliably. / Master of Science

Abnormality Detection in Retinal Images

Yu, Xiaoxue, Hsu, Wynne, Lee, Wee Sun, Lozano-Pérez, Tomás 01 1900 (has links)
The implementation of data mining techniques in the medical area has generated great interest because of its potential for more efficient, economic and robust performance when compared to physicians. In this paper, we focus on the implementation of Multiple-Instance Learning (MIL) in the area of medical image mining, particularly to hard exudates detection in retinal images from diabetic patients. Our proposed approach deals with the highly noisy images that are common in the medical area, improving the detection specificity while keeping the sensitivity as high as possible. We have also investigated the effect of feature selection on system performance. We describe how we implement the idea of MIL on the problem of retinal image mining, discuss the issues that are characteristic of retinal images as well as issues common to other medical image mining problems, and report the results of initial experiments.

Lindeborg, Anna January 2012 (has links)
The aim of the study was to investigate how potential new parents aged 20-40 would prefer the information about soft markers to be handled. The study was designed as a pilot study, and a questionnaire was made with parameters divided into 11 scenarios. The questionnaire was handed out at lectures in the Stockholm area in April of 2012. Answers were analyzed in SPSS with chi-2 tests. 49 women and 36 men participated in the study. Potential new parents often wish to be informed of discovered soft markers. However, a significant portion of the participants say they prefer not to know about soft markers in their foetus in some scenarios. Scenarios where the condition is incurable or where the soft marker is placed in the brain or heart of the foetus are the ones where the most people say they want the information. A soft marker placed in the foetus’ intestines or skeleton is when the most people answer that they do not wish to recieve this information. Significant differences are seen between different groups. Women more often than men say they do not want information about a discovered soft marker. The same is true for those who are married or cohabitating when compared to singles. Those who are already parents want information about a soft marker to a lower degree than those who do not have children.
