An Assessment of Suitable Feed Quantity and Quality for Riffleshell Mussels (Epioblasma spp.) Held in Captivity

Bush, Amy L. 31 March 2008 (has links)
Optimum feed ration was determined for riffleshell mussels (Epioblasma spp.) held in captivity. Mussels were fed one of four rations (0.49, 0.72, 1.28, or 1.73 mg dry wt/l) of algae Neochloris oleoabundans for 2-h trials in spring, summer, fall, and winter. The test ration resulting in the most feed absorbed per hour (net absorption rate, mg/h) was determined to be the optimum feed ration. Mussels absorbed the greatest amount of food when fed the highest ration. Suggested feed rations for captive adult Epioblasma species are 1.73 mg/l when held at moderate temperatures (i.e., 15-19C), and 1.28 mg/l when held at cool temperatures (i.e., near 11C). Seasonal utilization of protein by oyster mussel (E. capsaeformis) and rainbow mussel (V. iris) was examined with O:N ratios. Ratios were determined for mussels fed a low or high-protein diet (0.11, or 0.31 mg protein/mg dry algal feed), and for mussels held in a hatchery or in the Clinch River, in spring, summer, and winter. Significant differences in O:N ratios were not observed between mussels fed a low or high-protein diet (p > 0.05). The O:N ratios were significantly highest in spring and summer, and lowest in winter (p < 0.05). Mussels primarily utilized protein in spring and summer, and conserved protein in winter. A diet high in energy was suggested in spring and summer, and a diet high in protein was suggested in winter. / Master of Science

Absorção, redistribuição e uso de potássio (rubídio) por cultivares de soja com tipo de crescimento indeterminado / Uptake, redistribution and potassium (rubidium) use efficiency by soybean cultivars with indeterminate growth type

Jordão, Luiz Tadeu 21 February 2014 (has links)
Os valores de NC externo e interno obtidos neste estudo são superiores aos verificados na literatura para genótipos de soja com tipo de crescimento determinado (TCD) / Studies on the potassium use efficiency (KUE), potassium uptake efficiency (KUpE) as well as the definition of critical values of K in soil and plant for soybean cultivars with determinate growth type (DGT) and indeterminate (IGT) are fundamental to the selection of genotypes to nutritional requirements and allow placement of these materials for cultivation in different edaphic environments. This study aimed to evaluate the K (and Rubidium - Rb) uptake efficiency by uptake kinetics (Vmax, Km and Cmín) assessment and root morphology, the K use efficiency (KUE) through the transport and redistribution of K (and Rb) in plant parts, and define critical values of K in the soil and leaves used for diagnosis for soybeans with IGT. The first two experiments (uptake kinetics of Rb and root morphology, transport and redistribution of K/Rb) were carried out in greenhouse conditions at CENA/USP, from October 2012 to January 2013, and the third experiment was developed under field conditions at Embrapa Soybean, from September 2010 to March 2013. For the first two experiments, one cultivar with DGT (TMG 1066 RR) and three with IGT (VMAX RR, NA RG 5909 and BRS 360 RR) was used, and for the last experiment was used the soybean cultivars with IGT VMAX RR and BRS 360 RR. There was genotypic variation in morphologic parameters of the roots, except for the root diameter. The uptake kinetics parameters Vmax, Km and Cmín ranged among the cultivars on each concentration of Rb. However, no difference was observed on the K uptake efficiency (KUpE) among the cultivars from DGT or IGT group. There was a significant interaction between genotypes and treatments of Rb for the variables grain mass yield, putrescine, K and Rb accumulation, Rb redistribution, long distance transport of K and K use efficiency (KUE). The TMG 1066 RR and VMAX RR cultivars have a greater efficiency in production and use of K. No differences were found concerning the accumulation and redistribution of K for DGT and IGT cultivars. Symptoms of K deficiency were found in two soybean cultivars from the beginning of pod formation and grain filling. The soil critical levels of K to VMAX RR and BRS 360 RR genotypes were 0.38 and 0.29 cmolc dm-3, respectively, while the plant-tissue critical levels of K for the same cultivars were 25.4 and 21.3 g kg-1, respectively. The soil and plant-tissue critical level values obtained in this study are higher than those in the literature for genotypes with determinate growth type (DGT)

Modeling, Simulation and Characterization of Optoelectronic Properties of 2D-3D CoO-ATO Nano Structures

Khan, Ridita Rahman 03 November 2017 (has links)
Devices for converting solar energy to electrical energy are not considerably efficient, though there are abundant renewable solar energy sources. Therefore there is a continuous call for investigation of new devices that are efficient and eco-friendly thereby contributing to harvested energy technology. This thesis characterizes the optical constant (refractive index) of a novel material, cobalt oxide-antimony doped tin oxide (CoO-ATO). Thin film of CoO-ATO is generated using spin coating of CoO-ATO solution having 76.33% chloroform, 13.47% polystyrene, 10% antimony doped tin oxide and 0.2% cobalt oxide by weight. The thin film is analyzed through ellipsometry to acquire the refractive index of the material through the visible spectrum, which is used for modeling an antireflective coating in a solar cell. The model is designed and analyzed by simulation using computer simulated technology, and the results of the analysis of a thin film or a nanofiber membrane of the novel material implemented as an antireflective coating layer that affects the absorption efficiency of the optoelectronic device. The result of the analysis showed enhancement of absorption efficiency within the visible spectrum for both thin film and nanofiber membrane of the novel material CoO-ATO. The absorption through thin film was more than that of the nanofiber membrane.

Development of an experimental approach to measure vitamin B12 production and absorption in sheep

Ludemann, M. R. January 2009 (has links)
Clinical diagnosis of vitamin B12/cobalt (Co) deficiency is difficult due to the unspecific nature of the clinical symptoms. The apparent increase in vitamin B12 deficiency in New Zealand in the late 1990’s made it clear that health providers were very reliant on plasma reference ranges to diagnose deficiency. However, the lack of quantitative data of what these reference ranges represent in terms of supply of vitamin B12, has prevented a better understanding of the metabolism of vitamin B12 within sheep. This thesis describes the development of an experimental approach to measure vitamin B12 production and absorption in sheep. The model was then used to investigate whether the type of carbohydrate source affects vitamin B12 production and/or absorption. In the first trial (Chapter 4), an adaptation of the repletion technique of Suttle (1974) for copper was used. Previously vitamin B12 depleted sheep were maintained on a diet of 400 g DM meadow hay and 250 g DM crushed barley and which provided a daily intake of 0.03 mg Co. Sheep were intravenously infused with known quantities of vitamin B12 (0 – 200 nmol hydroxycobalamin/d) to determine whether a relationship exists between plasma vitamin B12 concentration and rate of entry of the vitamin into the bloodstream and to quantify the relationship. Eight ewes fitted with rumen and abomasal cannulae were used in a paired 4x4 Latin square design. Four levels of vitamin B12 were infused into the jugular vein for 4 d followed by recovery period of 17 d and the plasma responses measured during this period. Control animals maintained relatively stable plasma levels while levels in treated animals rose sharply within 4 h after the start of infusion. The responses were proportional to infusion rate with a highly significant difference in concentrations observed between treatments (P<0.001). Appearance of vitamin B12 in the plasma was quantified by the relationship Y(pmol/l) = 238 + 102x0.74 where x = infusion rate(nmol B12/d), R² = 0.945. Plasma levels declined rapidly on cessation of infusion and had returned to original pre-treatment levels by the end of the recovery period. The second trial (Chapter 5) quantified plasma responses in relation to dietary Co supply to the rumen. The same eight rumen and abomasal cannulated ewes were used in a paired 4x4 Latin square with 4 levels of intra-ruminal Co infusion in amounts ranging from 0 – 1 mg Co/d as CoSO₄, infused for 4 d followed by a 19 d recovery period. Plasma vitamin B12 response was measured as were concentration of vitamin B12 in abomasal digesta supernatant and digesta liquid flow, the latter using polyethylene glycol as liquid phase marker. Plasma concentration increased from approximately 300 pmol/l to 750 – 800 pmol/l, peaking at day 5 after commencement of infusions. Control animals infused with water maintained base-line plasma vitamin B12 levels around 250 pmol/l. Digesta liquid flow was estimated at 14.6 l/d. The results from Chapters 4 and 5 allowed estimates of vitamin B12 production and absorption. These results are discussed and efficiency of capture of Co into vitamin B12 from dietary Co intake was estimated to decrease from 8.4% to 0.74% as Co intake increased from 0.03 to 1.11 mg Co/d. Absorption coefficient was estimated from the relationships between abomasal vitamin B12 flow and plasma response. The absorption coefficient was calculated to increase from 7 to 10% as abomasal vitamin B12 flow increased from 108 to 142 nmol/d. The current animal model was subsequently used in the final trial (Chapter 6) to investigate whether the type of carbohydrate supplied in the diet influences vitamin B12 production and absorption. The same eight ewes fitted with rumen and abomasal cannulae were used in a 2x4 cross-over design. Half of the ewes were maintained on the basal diet and crushed barley while, for the remainder, the barley was replaced by 250 g of fructose:sucrose in a 80:20 mix during a 7 d period of adaptation. While on their respective diets, both groups were then infused with 0.3 mg Co/d for 6 d, a level chosen to optimise plasma vitamin B12 response. All ewes were then returned to the basal diet and barley for a 15 d recovery period after which treatments were reversed and the procedure repeated. Rumen pH, valeric, propionic, butyric, succinic, and acetic acid and ammonia concentrations were not significantly affected by diet. Digesta flow was 30% greater on a diet enriched with starch compared to sugar-enriched diet. There was an observed difference in vitamin B12 production. However there was no significant diet x time effect on plasma vitamin B12 concentration so any difference in production was negated by a difference in absorption. Carbohydrate supplied as water soluble carbohydrate or starch does not appear to influence plasma vitamin B12 concentration.

Espalhamento de ondas eletromagnéticas por esferas e cilindros magnéticos: confinamento e transporte de ondas no limite de pequenas partículas e independência da energia armazenada com relação à forma do centro espalhador / Electromagnetic wave scattering by magnetic spheres and cylinders: waves confinement and transport in the small particle limit and independence of the stored energy with respect to the shape of the scatterer

Arruda, Tiago José 01 October 2010 (has links)
Electromagnetic scattering by a sphere with arbitrary optical properties and radius, known as the Lorenz-Mie scattering, or by an infinite right circular cylinder can be solved analytically and is widely treated in the approach of dielectric scatterers. In the optical range, both embedding medium and scattering particle have the same magnetic permeability. The absence of magnetism in this spectral range leads to the equivalence between the relative refraction and impedance indices associated with the scatterers. However, in microwave or radio-frequency ranges, ferro- and ferrimagnetic materials can exhibit extremely huge values of magnetic permeability, which reduce the optical impedance in comparison to the corresponding value of relative refraction index. One striking feature associated with the magnetism in the scatterer is that particles smaller than the wavelength (Rayleigh size region) can present large extinction cross sections in despite of their small geometric cross sections. This becomes physically possible the presence of morphology-dependent resonances in the electromagnetic energy within the scatterer even in size parameters region smaller than unity. In particular, we show that this time-averaged electromagnetic energy has, in the weak absorption regime, a simple functional relation with the incident wavelength and the scatterer absorption cross section which does not depend on the shape of the scatterer. In the multiple scattering regime, the energy-transport velocity can be estimated from the time-averaged electromagnetic energy stored in a single scatterer. Thereby, the validity of the universal relation between the internal energy-enhancement factor and the absorption cross section respective to an arbitrary scattering center (in the weak absorption regime) implies that the energy-transport velocity in disordered media can be evaluated in a simple way. From this approximation, we obtain that even in the Rayleigh size region the energy-transport velocity in disordered magnetic media is dramatically reduced, which consequently leads to a reduction of the diffusion coefficient of the photons. The analytical and numerical studies of the time-averaged electromagnetic energy within magnetic isotropic spheres and cylinders irradiated by plane waves are our aim in this Master\'s degree dissertation.
