Jansson, Emelie January 2015 (has links)
Drug and alcohol abuse is a health problem worldwide. To stay sober, or come back to the society and live a healthy life, might be influenced by many factors. The aim of the study was to examine sober alcohol and drug abusers’ experiences of social support, leisure time activities, exclusion and participation in the society. A qualitative study with semi-structured interviews was used to address the aim of the study. The content analysis of four interviews showed that sober abusers experience the lack of social support. Furthermore, they encounter difficulties to participate in and experience alienation in society. The participants considered that social support, leisure activities, exclusion and participation in society was important to them. Finally, there was a desire from sober abusers to carry out interests of their own, and feel a sense of belonging to the community.

Nilsson, Sandra, Åström, Malin January 2016 (has links)
Abstract The aim of this study is to illustrate how people with drug abuse problems are being depicted in drug courts, by examining the statements of the social welfare board and the individual, and the drug courts evaluation and judgement. These statements are being examined from power theories and a social constructionist perspective. Furthermore, the study aims to examine how these statements relate to each other. The study has a qualitative approach based on a discourse analytical method with following analytical tools; modality, processes, terminology, passive sense and nominalization. Based on the social constructionist perspective, the language in the verdicts is considered as both constructed and constructing. The empirical data consists of two verdicts concerning compulsory drug treatment, acquired from a drug court located in a medium-sized city in Sweden. In conclusion, the parties' statements may include varying degrees of truth and credibility, depending on structure and word choices. Further, different groups, in this case the social welfare board, the drug court (lawyers) and doctors, throughout the study is given the role of so-called privileged speakers with a special interpretative prerogative, whose expertise and opinions are often a kind of unchallenged knowledge. It is also evident how there are power differences even between these groups. I the two analyzed cases, the results show that different parties have the primary interpretative prerogative. Common to both cases is that the person with drug abuse problems are attributed to the least power, credibility and degree of truth, and thus end up at the bottom of this chain. A key finding in the study is that people with drug abuse problems are constructed in different ways in the verdicts, depending on the choice of words, sentence structure and current discourse. The language in the verdicts becomes a power tool that create, recreate and maintain beliefs about the abuser. Compulsory treatment, discourse analysis, social constructionism, power, drug abuser

A profile of the child-on-child sexual abuser in a children's home / T. Mocke.

Mocke, Tarina January 2013 (has links)
Child-on-child sexual abuse is seen as a severe social as well as a psychological problem, because of the current increasing dimension of sexual abuse in South-Africa. If the profile of a sexually abusive child in a children’s home is known, the individual development plan for the specific child can be accurately determined, in order to insure that the child receives the correct intervention. The risk that other children may be exposed to sexual abuse or sexual inappropriate behaviour might decrease, if the profile of a sexually abusive child in a children’s home is known. The purpose of the research study was to focus on child-on-child sexual abuse in a children’s home, explaining to the reader the reasons and consequences of child-on-child sexual abuse and also to determine a profile of a child-on-child sexual abuser in a children’s home. The researcher followed a qualitative approach. Four children who are or were perpetrators in child-on-child sexual abuse in a children’s home were intensively studied. Six social workers working with sexually abused children in children’s homes were interviewed. The interviews with the participants in the study focused on the following main themes: Theme 1 Removal of children from parental care Theme 2 Child-on-child sexual abuse in children’s homes Theme 3 The child as sexual perpetrator in a children’s home Theme 4 Intervention that the children received Theme 5 Reasons why children abuse other children Theme 6 Consequences of child-on-child sexual abuse Theme 7 A profile of the child-on-child sexual abuser in a children’s home The results of the data were devided into subthemes for detailed clarification of the respondents’s experiences in order to make usefull recommendations. / Thesis (MSW (Forensic Practice))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2013.

Gender and Nationality: The Exploration of Intimate Violence in Taiwanese -Vietnamese Marriages with Statements of Taiwanese Male Abusers

Syu, Hao-Ya 08 September 2010 (has links)
This paper aims to explore male abusers of intimate violence in Taiwanese- Vietnamese Marriages, and discuss opinions of their marriage and violated behaviors under the social structure. Hence, the research tries to figure out: 1.in what ways do these male-partners deal with the intimate violence and respond to potential changes of their marriages? 2.what are their strategies to maintain their power and masculinity in their marriage? 3.what would be the obstruction in their intimate relationship? With in-depth interview of six Taiwanese husbands, the results show that the imagination of perfect marriage in these male-partners¡¦ mind is full of the traditional gender vision. That¡¦s why these male-partners tend to reinforce the intimate violence when they find their partners couldn¡¦t fit in with the ideal model. In fact, these male abusers could deny all counts about their violated behaviors later. Besides, male-partners even use ¡¨gender¡¨ and ¡§nationality¡¨ to rationalize their behaviors, such as accusing their female-partners with horrible family concepts, unfaithful, engaging in prostitution, cheating, and over- aggressive.

Gustavsson, Catrin, Karlsson, Sandra January 2008 (has links)

/
The purpose of this study is to examine the results of substance abusers after they have completed their visit in an institution/foster home. Parts of the purpose are to examine specific variables and their effects on the results as well as what the documentation looks like. From this we have formulated these following questions. (1) Generally, what have these efforts resulted in? (2) How have the social relationships been described in connection to this? (3) How has the client’s participation and motivation been described? (4) How has the collected documentation of these efforts been functioning? To answer these questions 14 files have been studied and the method has been both qualitative and quantitative. Our findings show that the result, regarding the abuse situation, has improved six months after completed treatment for six of the clients. The proportion women are considerably larger than the proportion of men with improved abuse situation. Previous research regarding social relationships and motivation has shown that these variables have significance for the result. Our findings regarding social relationships show that they were of importance for the abuse situation. The documentation in our research material has been insufficient and this has led to difficulties when trying to answer our questions. This study points out the importance of systematic methods of documenting because this is a prerequisite for the social services to be able to evaluate and to develop their activity. It seems like documenting and working with the client’s social relationships and motivation for treatment could influence the result to a more positive outcome.
