Management consulting & academic research and theory : – jointly connected or increasingly separated?

Evers, Isabelle, Sundelius, Anna January 2009 (has links)

The management consultancy profession has shifted from being a deeply academically rootedprofession to a profession where the connection to academic institutions is more indistinct.Where the knowledge within management consultancy firms comes from is more and moreunclear. The gap between management practice and academic research is sometimesdescribed as unbridgeable for several reasons. Our purpose of this study is to see howimportant academic research and theory is to management consultancy firms’ knowledge baseand what impact obstacles and outer pressure can have on this.As our theory base for this study we have the “Three Basic Elements of theKnowledge System and their Interrelations” model by Werr and Stjernberg (2003). We haveredefined and also added some elements to this model and thereby designed our own model“The Knowledge Base System in an Institutionalized Environment” which functions as aground for our analysis. We have performed this study by using the quantitative method ofquestionnaires where we have used two types of questionnaire, one for the companies and onefor the consultants. The conclusions that we can draw is that academic research and theory isvery important to management consultancy firms’ knowledge bases. However, the consultantssay they have greater usage of their experiences in their daily work, even though they useacademic research and theory as a mean to communicate with each other within theconsultancy firm. A conclusion of this is that experience and academic research and theorymight not be in conflict but have different functions and complement each other.

Young, Melissa Ann 01 November 2015 (has links) (PDF)
The Vocabulary Research Database (VRD) is a research tool comprised of a compilation of state-of-the art academic research in the field of vocabulary acquisition and pedagogy. The VRD has flexible search features that allow users to obtain higher granularity than is possible with other free databases and online search options currently available, making the results more relevant and manageable. These features include the ability to constrain results by date, author, publication, sub-topics, keywords, citation numbers, journal impact factors, and participant ages. It is anticipated that the ability to manipulate results, combined with relevant and current content, will provide language professionals with a valuable tool for accessing vocabulary-specific research, enabling them to better inform and improve their work.

Legal aspects of academic technology transfer

Delmotte, Alexandre 02 December 2011 (has links)

O tema do estudo aborda o DSES. / The present study aims at the defense of Thesis regarding the use of academic research in the Sustainable Development in Higher Education (SDHE), as a requirement to obtain a Doctorate in the Postgraduate Program in Production Engineering and Systems of the Polytechnic School of the University of Valley of the Sinos River - UNISINOS. The subject of the study addresses the SDHE. It questions the current contribution of the academic research in relation to the theme and its main objective is to propose contributions that increase the practices of the SDHE through the Teaching of Sustainability (TS). To this end, it investigated 4 non-state universities, evaluating 12 research projects and their contributions to the SDHE and TS practices. The organization of this work consists of the introduction; theoretical reference; methodology; analysis and discussion of results and bibliography. The Systematic Review of Literature (SRL) pointed to the gap in scientific production regarding the expansion of knowledge in the SDHE through the use of academic research results in TS. The revised literature was codified as SDHE, TS, Barriers to SDHE and Academic Research. Regarding the research methodology, it is a question of a research of inductive characteristic, as far as the scientific method is concerned, and an exploratory, multiple-case, qualitative study is evidenced. The research protocol presented the questions that were elaborated by the doctoral student, considering the SRL that guided a semi-structured process of data collection. The interviews with the researchers of the participating universities of the study were presential and through Skype. A System model in the SDHE to be used in the analysis and discussion of the results is also presented: we work with the synthesis of the findings: the dialogue with literature; the contributions of the Thesis; the final considerations pointing to the proof of the Thesis; the attendance to the objectives and the possibilities of future studies.

These concepts were brought up by the educational research, and expressed by dissertations and thesis in the Brazilian Graduate Programs. The dissertations and the thesis were chosen based on the fact that they are accessible to a possible development of a master's thesis, and because if these productions cannot be classified as high-end work, they express the production of the Brasilian Graduate Programs that can be considered as the locus of the most advanced social research in the country. The analysis of the content has been employed as the procedure for the analysis of research to demonstrate the subjects pointed out in the work. It is based on the contributions of Marshall (1967), Bobbio (2004), Castilho (2011), Arendt (2009), Carvalho (2011), and other authors that use research in education with the focus on the concept of citizenship. Sacristán (2000; 2002) and Gentili (1998; 2001). Intend to make in-depth balance with review of research involving school-citizenship through the following indicators: the concept of citizenship, and school-citizenship / Esta pesquisa teve, como objetivo, levantar e analisar as concepções sobre a relação escola e cidadania que estão sendo construídas pelas dissertações e teses defendidas nos programas de Pós-Graduação brasileira.

In dialogue with the historical and dialectical materialism and qualitative approach, developed a literature in which it assumes, based on Freire (1996, 2005), that education is an intentional human activity, a practice fraught with social meanings and values , which aims to fundamental human emancipation. The problem of our research was formulated in the following question: The academic productions of the Post - gradation in Education of the Midwest Region of Brazil, which are based on a critical perspective of education, have offered subsidies for teacher training in perspective emancipatory? The goal is to understand the concepts of teacher training involved in academic productions of the Post -Graduate Education of the Midwest, defended in the period 1999-2007. Therefore, we performed in the first two chapters, a raid in historical Brazilian pedagogical ideas and conceptions of teacher training, which offered theoretical elements for the construction of three categories of production analysis: practice, teaching and designing education / emancipatory education. From our analysis, we conclude that, in general, the knowledge produced by these works contributes many benefits to strength, to build a concept of counter-hegemonic formation in an emancipatory perspective. And , to achieve the purpose of emancipation as put up also as challenges to academic research critical : a proper understanding of transformative praxis , the articulation of political, technical, ethical and aesthetic of teacher training , the perception of political- ideological consciousness teacher in their social function , but associated with aspects of human subjectivity in the constitution of being a teacher . It is also noticed the need for greater vigilance epistemological (MAGALHÃES; SOUZA, 2011), as well as the articulation of the ontological, axiological and gnosiological in some studies directly related to the definition of worldviews, society, male and education that underlie their research. We are therefore referring us to an understanding on the part of researchers , the roots of thought that guide your eyes to reality , which may even compromise the quality of the research and its potential mediating role in the transformation of society and the construction of a new sociability as a liberating perspective.

Managing Commercialization of Academic research : A Case Study of Umea University, Sweden

Mir, Rizwan, Ahsan Hassan, Muhammad January 2010 (has links)
Background and Research Problem: Universities are complex and diversified institutions playing an active role in society. Besides education and research universities are now assigned a new role of commercialization of academic research. There is pressure on universities to act as a bridge for transfer of knowledge to industries and generate resources. As this role of commercialization is comparatively new for the universities so they face challenges and difficulties in managing commercialization along with education and research. In order to overcome these challenges some support structures has been introduced in the form of Technology Transfer Office (TTO) or Industry Liaison Office (ILO). As the role and support structures are new, so there is a need to develop such a managerial system which can better integrate the activities related to commercialization of academic research. Research Purpose: This is a case study of Umeå University conducted to understand and evaluate the commercialization activities and functioning of support structures. The specific purpose is to investigate and suggest that, how universities having support structures but lacking success stories and track records, should manage its commercialization activities. Method: Qualitative research methods are used and semi-structured interviews have been conducted from eight respondents. Umeå University has been used as a case study. Concluding Comments: On the basis of this study we would like to comment that, Umeå University is committed to perform its third role of contribution towards society and there is adequate infrastructure available in terms of support structures. But still as this role is new for the university and carrying on commercialization activities while insuring freedom of research is a challenging task. So, a detailed evaluation of existing support structures and reorganization of their existing activities is required. It may also require better understanding and communication of the concept of commercialization, generation of new ideas and a greater attention, both from the support structures and central management of the university.
